Just as Mythra disappeared Katie said “Wait!! When do I get a chance to ask questions? I sat here this whole time silent, so I could get a chance to ask questions.” A glare I could actually feel heat off of was turned my way. “You kept repeating. Or needing things explained over, and over again. While no one allowed me to talk.” I thought about it for a second. Than I admitted to myself that she had a point, but… “Since when have you ever sat silently while you needed to say something?” The glare turned up a few degrees. She than started walking..stalking? … yep definitely stalking towards me. “YOU TOLD ME TO NOT INTERRUPT!!”
I involuntarily took a step back, “I'm sorry I didn’t let you talk. Considering when you were talking. All you did was insult her. To the point she nearly killed both of us… LITERALLY.” The tone, and volume in my voice must have had an effect. She stopped. I saw just a touch of tears forming in her eyes. Suddenly she turned around facing away from me. I mentally stumbled. I started to walk towards Katie. An arm rose behind her with a single finger upraised towards me. While i’m sure some would hope that it was the middle finger, it was her pointer finger. Im guessing it meant, she was asking for a moment. Maybe? Heck I don't understand unspoken words. I tried to apologize. “I’m sorry…” she interrupted me “SH sh sshhh, I told you I needed a moment. Your not my favorite person right now.”
I stifled a sigh knowing there was no winning this. So I settled on my recliner, accidentally my elbow hit the remote control. The TV turned on, not intentionally….I swear. I’m usually never one to watch the news. I hate being lied too. But somehow that is the station that popped up on the screen. Must have been a higher power at work. I saw the volcano story. I have to admit. It caught my attention. With all the wierd stuff going on, in just my living room. A rainbow volcano is admittedly not the weirdest thing going on.
While I sat there I tried mentally to examine my interface. I got a great view of my health bar, my mana bar, also my spell. That’s about it. I tried all kinds of mental exercises, to force open my stats screen. Nothing was working. I felt like a geriatric trying to work ‘the internet’. I knew there had to be a way to get it to work. I sighed saying “Why can’t it just be a simple command like status.” And as wonders never cease. It worked!! I saw my stats.

“That’s all? I know I just got these powers, but damn i’m a scrub.” About this time I noticed that Katie was standing over me. With her hands on her hips… glaring at me. “So i’m so unimportant that you can just sit back, relax, and ignore me.” I knew the correct answer was not. ‘Yes, ofcourse it’s OK to ignore you’. So thankfully I didn’t say that outloud. I looked up at her slowly saying. “No ofcourse not, but you needed a moment. Anything I said to you would make it worse. So I got out of kicking range. To gave you the time you needed.” Wow, I even impressed myself. I had no idea where that came from. But it sure looked like it worked. “Why did you turn on the science fiction channel?”
I looked up confused, than looked at the TV. On it was a strange green fog. It was surrounding a very spooky looking forest. If you stared long enough you could just barely make out movement in the fog. But never exactly what was moving. I turned the volume up, to hear. “That’s right Peter. The fog is very caustic. It is believed to be from a chemical spill. The office of Homeland security has already said ‘there are no reports of terrorism in the Virginia area’ This reporter is glad of that. The cause of the fog turning green, is frightening the locals. It is not dispersing, which has local authorities worried. At least four officers have gone in to investigate. When they return, I will have an update. This is Dawn Reynolds reporting from ACB news.”
I looked over to Katie. “That’s the actual news channel. Wierd is the way the world works now.” Katie looked around. She walked to the dining room, grabbing a chair from the dining room table. She dragged it over, causing me to wince. She sat down next to me to watch. In the next few hours we watched amazing stories from around the world. The main focus seamed to be in the ‘old world’. Egypt, India, Africa, Italy, and England. They were swarming with things usually in a horror movie. No bodies, or blood, but plenty of creepy forests. There were tons of videos of people being attacked by strange animals. It almost felt like it was still early in a movie. It was wierd, but not end of the world weird. Like it was just setting a scene. The freeky murderer in a funky mask would come later.
Almost nothing came out of China, or Russia. Which due to the governments near total control over media. It came as no surprise. Japan was also a dead zone of media coverage, other than the near impenetrable fog surrounding it.
We also saw people doing amazing things. One guy in just cut off jeans with flip flops. Must have been from Florida. He was shooting fireballs at a helicopter, while running from the cops.
Another guy in a bathrobe, and slippers. Underneath was nothing else. Just freeballing. He must have been very confident it was warm day. If you know what i mean. Strangly he was maniacally laughing as cops shot bullets at him. A strange blue glow formed about him. The bullets just ricocheted off of him. I knew priests in my game had a bubble power, so i was looking forward to learning that one.
One wild haired backwoods looking guy, in a flannel shirt. Was doing some archery competition. His normal at first glance arrows, would start glowing. Than he would shoot them. They exploded on contact with a bale of hay.
One that really drew my attention was of a huge bear, with glowing blue tribal tattoos. It was rampaging around a grocery store. “Give good people powers, and they might do good. Give bad people powers, and they do horrible things.” I intoned mournfully. Katie glanced at me. She nodded saying. “This is going to change everything.” I glanced at her saying. “Well the world is going to be going to shit here soon. We need to see what spells you have. So we can work on leveling up. That way when bad shit starts happening around us, we have a chance to survive.” Katie looked back at me wide eyed. “What do I do?” I considered carefully than said. “Mentally, and verbally say the words. ’Status’ see if that works."
Katie screwed up her face, eyes darting. Trying many audible versions of status. I wanted to poke some fun at her antics, but I knew this wasn’t the time. After we got a bit more done than I would remember this moment. So i would ofcourse be able to crow.
Katie eyes flashed, she gasped. “It worked!! I’m a druid!!”
