By our powers combined...

I smiled encouragingly saying. “What spells do you have?” Katie got a glazed look to her eyes, as she said. “Bind, wrath, and light.” My eyes goggled. “You got three spells?? That’s not fair! I only got one, I’m supposed to be a champion!” The shit eating grin on her face showed. This proved just how unfair the world was. I started doing a heavy footed march around the room, I wasn’t having a tantrum…I swear. Just before I said something I would regret, my tooltip box popped up with a message. “Opps I forgot to give you your extra spells, my bad. Mythra.” I stumbled as new thoughts, and feelings overcame me.

[You have unlocked new spells]

[Spell: Bubble ‘encase yourself in holy energy protecting you from a set amount of magic, or physical damage. You will take increased damage from magical attacks vs physical attacks.’]

[Spell: Holy bolt ‘call down a holy bolt from on high, does minimal damage to those with high physical defense. But does moderate damage against magical, and demonic enemies’]

[Spell: Aura ‘emits an aura continuously healing minor wounds, it also improves the moral of your comrades. Can be toggled on, or off.’]

Awesomesauce!! I got my anti-bullet bubble. I mentally thanked Mythra. I turned to Katie “Guess what I just got?” Katie got a look in her eye. “Jealous? Maybe herpes? If so stay away from me.” I had to stop for a second to try, to figure out the mental gymnastics she just forced my brain into. “No no no no, I just got my spells.” She looked slightly less mischievous, saying. “Oh which ones? I grinned “Holy bolt, Aura, and Bubble.” Katie smiled, the glint back in her eye. “Good, your not useless anymore.”

I was just about to lay the verbal smackdown on my “friend”, when the phone rang. The atmosphere deflated. I reached down, hesitantly saying. “Hello.” After a pregnant pause “Umm Oby? Did I get the number right?” As with everytime I heard this voice online. The oddity of hearing what sounds like a ten year old boy, always jars my psyche. I confusedly responded. “Aiden?” After a second the prepubesent sounding voice returned. “That’s my name online Oby, you can call me Philip.”

No matter how many times I hear his voice, he still sounds sooo young. He’s actually seven years older than me. He just so happens to be a professor of political science, at the University of Virginia. He’s also one of the very best mages in our game. Through the years he has been a great guild leader for our guild. So hearing the hesitancy in his voice, was extra special jarring.

“What can I do for you, Philip?” After a second he replied. “I have been watching the news. Have you been seeing what’s been going on? Anyways something happened…” he trailed off ominously. “You got laid?” I tried for levity… it failed. Very much annoyed he responded. “This is no joking matter, I moved.” Do you ever have one of those moments, where you have a third of the information to complete a full thought? But the other person talking, expects you to draw the invisible dots… ya it’s not fun.

“Your going to have to give me a bit more context, then just…moved.” He grumbled at me, which from a ten year old sounding adult, sounds funnier than you think. “I was in a rush to get home after a ton of meetings. All I wanted, was to already be at home.” The delay this time made me think we got cut off. But then he continued. “I grabbed my keys wishing I was home. Then I was! …’poof’ I moved.” The hamsters running the wheel in my head kicked into second gear. “Ooooohhhh, ya that’s cool. You need to come over to my place now. Avoid anything that looks…wierd.” He immediately replied. “What do you mean wierd? More importantly, why should I come to you?”

I gave him my address, saying. “I’ll explain everything once you get here. Wierd is kind of obvious, you haaaaavvvve been watching the news. So any fog, rainbow volcanos, or glowing things... avoid them. Please just hurry here. It will be tough to explain on the phone.” He waffled a moment, than relented “Ok, but there better be a good reason to drive that far.” We said goodbye.

I turned to Katie saying. “We are on a mission from a Goddess, so we are getting the whole team back together.” Unfortunately Katie didn’t get the reference. It always bugs me when I use good material. Predictably it goes right over people’s heads. I immediately dialed Keith. “Yello” I smiled. “Hello my brother from another mother.” The smile in his voice was obvious. “What’s up man?” I sat down on the recliner. “How hard would it be to drive over?” There was a pause. “Not to hard, ill have to bring Erica. You know we always go together now.” I chuckled. “That’s even better, both of you need to come over. Try to avoid any green fog, or spooky forests on the way.” There was a pause. “You do realize this is Virginia, yes? There is fog all over the place.” I smiled replying. “Yes I know, normal fog isn’t the issue. It’s just the green stuff, that’s the problem.” He chuckled “Never had a problem with the green stuff, it does make me cough. But then that’s only a minor issue.”

I shook my head, sighing. Yep we were definitely two peas in a pod, when it came to sarcastic responses. “How long do you think it will take you?” He took no time at all to respond. “Be there in about twenty minutes.” I grinned, knowing it was a forty-five mile drive. “Ok, i’ll time you…GO!” The squawk of protest died as I hung up. I looked up at Katie. That’s three more in total.” Katie looked at me pensivley. “Do you think they will have powers also?” I grinned mischievously. “Yep, I know Aiden already does. I cant call him Philip, its just too strange. Anyways I’m guessing both Keith, and Erica will be able to use powers. They have both been playing for years. Both have multiple characters, so its a toss up what they will get.”
