Chapter 19: The Prelude To...

Zalroth landed on the golden-looking marble-walled floor of the boss room, filled with two rows of towering and bold pillars running through the silver and bronzed checkered floor. Chronia hopped off Zalroth's back and slowly floated to the floor as she investigated her surroundings with her eyes. Zalroth narrowed his eyes and scoured the room for any signs or traces of the boss monster.

"Be on your tones, I can sense it's lurking nearby," Zalroth stated as he raised his fists into a combative stance. Chronia nodded before she hopped on the spot and levitated in the air.

"Got it, and it's, be on your toes, ya goof," Chronia remarked as she recalled what Nolazir said, "Oh yeah, Nolazir mentioned something about the-.". Chronia was cut off when Zalroth's six kitsune tails and his ears bursted into existence as they stood up on end, resembling a pinecone in the process.

"Zalroth... you good?" Chronia asked as she floated forward to look Zalroth in the face before she flinched at seeing Zalroth's expression. A murderous aura oozed from Zalroth, his pupils narrowing into sharp verticle slits, as he glared through Chronia and at the sizeable glowing indigo eyes glaring at the duo, hiding in the shadow-covered ceiling. A crystalline snarl echoed near the eyes as an indigo glow formed beneath the eyes.

Upon sensing something, Chronia spun around and spotted the boss before it unleashed a condensed purple fireball, firing it directly at the duo. With the fireball racing to them, Chronia swung her arms up and aimed them at the fireball. However, before the fireball could reach her, Zalroth hopped in front of Chronia and batted the fireball away with his arm. The fireball slammed into a nearby pillar and obliterated the middle of the pillar.

"I could've reflected that," Chronia pouted as Zalroth landed on the floor. Zalroth didn't respond and silently balled up his fists, making Chronia place her hands on her hips and huff at him. The boss monster snarled with a crystalline chime before it dropped down from above revealing itself to be a towering gem dragon constructed from amethyst. The boss monster slammed its feet against the floor, sending tremors through the magic dungeon and making Luthera, in the room above, bounce off the ground for a split second.

Increasing the intensity of his grip to the point his fingers punctured his palms, Zalroth lowered his head and gritted his teeth as small embers of dark green qi seeped out from his clenched hands. Chronia flew beside Zalroth and fist-pumped as she coated her body in teal/lime qi.

"Alright, let's show this walking art exhibit who's boss...es," Chronia remarked as she playfully punched a fist forward. Chronia spun around, moving at such speed it appeared she skipped the turning part, to look at Zalroth.

"What's with you; you aren't gonna fall asleep right now, are you?" Chronia asked teasingly as she poked the top of Zalroth's head. The qi embers around Zalroth's hand lightened to a normal green before he raised his head and waved the qi off his hands.

"Of course not, can't have you caving us in here," Zalroth retorted sternly as he cracked his neck.

"I'm not that... reckless... anymore," Chronia murmured before zipping a perfect circle around Zalroth, "See, no crash landing," Chronia stated smugly while throwing her arms up, making Zalroth roll his eyes. A large concentrated fireball slammed into Chronia's back. Before she reacted, the fireball rebounded off her and blasted straight back at the amethyst dragon. The dragon ducked its head under the fireball as it rushed over and exploded against the wall behind it.

"What was that?" Chronia uttered perplexedly as she glanced in the direction of the explosion.

"My point being proven," Zalroth remarked as he sprung his head back before fixing his fighting stance.

"But I didn't even do anything!" Chronia grumbled, hanging her arms like a picked-up cat. Zalroth scratched his kitsune ear and sighed.

"What a hassle," Zalroth whispered.

"Wha?" Chronia mumbled before registering what Zalroth planned to say and defeatedly groaned, "That was close... thought you did the thing,". The gem dragon fired another fireball which was somehow automatically reflected the second it touched Chronia.

"What thing?" Zalroth asked. Chronia's cheeks turned faintly pink, and she threw her fists around.

"Not Important!" Chronia exclaimed before another fireball was repelled off her body. Chronia crossed her arms and scrunched up her mouth. "It happened again didn't it?". Zalroth nodded before the previous fireball exploded against a support pillar, making the entire room rumble as small bits of debris fell from the ceiling.

"Whatever you say, now let's get this over with," Zalroth replied as he and Chronia readied themselves to fight the boss.

Meanwhile, Zalina led on the motorhome's table with her kitsune tails wrapped around her body, making her look like a cat in loaf mode. She puffed up her cheeks and sulked as she stared out at the rain-covered side window. She listened to the rain hit against the window and counted how many times a prime number of raindrops were heard. She audibly sighed to let her boredom be known as she looked at the derpy grass snake golem.

"Why does Zalina have to stay behind...," Zalina grumbled as Onix's small derpy snake golems slithered around the table. While Zalina continued to sulk, Ruiria rummaged through a kitchen cabinet before pulling a large jar out.

"Well, someone had to stay behind to protect the motorhome," Ruiria stated as she hopped onto one of the side table's sofas. Zalina bopped up and down as she turned around to face Ruiria.

"So... Zalina was left here to... um, man the fort?" Zalina asked as her eyes lit up.

"I'd put more faith in you protecting my motorhome than myself," Ruiria replied. Zalina's eyes sparkled as she bounced on the spot and broke out of her loaf mode.

"You're right, you're so right, why didn't Zalina realize! Zalina was left here because they knew she'd be able to-," Zalina announced as she swayed her arms around and arched her head upwards. Zalina paused her crazed preaching and sniffed the air as a sweet smell passed her nose. Zalina lowered her head and spotted the open cookie jar on the table.

"Cool your tails; the last thing I need is another near miss with my motorhome," Ruiria remarked as she handed Zalina a cookie. Zalina sat down on the table and began munching on the cookie.

"Near miss?" Zalina asked as she continued munching on the cookie.

"Don't worry about it, just some nut job who tore a hole through a city block after being put in a crazed near-death state," Ruiria explained.

"Oh...," Zalina uttered before she stopped eating her cookie, "Kinda like Yin Essense when he... erm....". Zalina scratched her head before shrugging and continuing to eat her cookie, leaving Ruiria to wonder what Zalina was going to say and who Yin Essense even was.
