Apathy [S3_C9] Season of the changing wind {4}

Fenella Tirsten

Cold. So cold she felt. Even the blazing sun, high above them, could not warm her. Did the winter come earlier this time or was it the guilt gripping her guts? A whole day. They lost a whole day just because she slept through a whole day and night. She would sleep for far longer if it weren’t for the orders that came next day. They were to move north, towards the coast. Some god forsaken village requested the presence of a Judge and they were the nearest pair. One more distraction pulling her away from her hunt.

“You did not fail her.”

Bursa’s voice broke the monotony of kabu’s hooves clapping against the ground.

“They are a moon ahead of us. Do not blame yourself for something you have no control over.”

“They hell you know! I did not ask for your preaching!”

She urged her mount to run faster. Bursa matched her speed.

“A failure is defined by actions you could take but didn’t. By the time any of us arrived where they took her, nothing we did mattered. Hundreds of others went through the same tracks we did and found naught. Hundreds more undoubtedly will go and sieve again through all we did not find. How can you fail when your actions have no meaning for the outcome? We did no more but introduce noise for those that will come after us…”

A blast from her palm vaporized his kabu and sent him flying through the trees until a massive Pine trunk stopped him. Fenella floated towards him, lightnings dancing around her body.

“Noise?!”

Several bolts went through his chest melting his armor. She gripped him with her magic and pulled closer until their faces almost touched.

“Have they slaughtered your parents and kidnapped you?! Have they tortured, raped and cut out a beating heart from your little sister then continue to rape her body all they while making you watch?! Had they tied you to the same altar, still covered in her warm blood?! Had they made you stare into her dead eyes as they rape you?!”

Her power raged around them, obliterating all in her reach. Bursa’s skin begun to crack. His blood gushed from between the cracks.

“Enough.”

Somebody grabbed her arm and canceled her magic.

“My son angered you, but it is not a reason to kill him. His is sorry for reawaking your pain.”

If by sorry she meant sprawled on the ground and vomiting blood, Bursa did appear sorry.

And then it dawned on her. Baldy. The famous lapdog of the empire. Not many knew his secret. She never believed that story and yet, here she was. A woman of inhuman beauty. Standing next to her. Holding her arm in her petit hand with a strength of an iron vise. The spirit graced her with a gentle smile.

“Child, where are your manners? Introduce me to your… girlfriend.”

One look of those unearthly eyes could kill. If she wanted to. Maybe not yet by Fenella knew her life hanged on a hair. The spirit still held her and did not appear intent on letting her go.

“Mother…”

Bursa coughed out more blood. Whatever he wished to say, died in his throat as he fainted.

“Such fragile boy.”

The queen’s grip tightened around Fenelle’s wrist. A bit more and her bones would snap. She looked her deep in the eyes.

“Human, know this. I will not kill you today only because your death would distress my son. However, know this, I will erase you if you ever harm him again.”

The spirit released her and kneeled to tend to her son. She propped him against a rock that rose from the earth upon her order.

“Pain, pain, go away…”

She whispered kissing his forehead and his wounds vanished.

“Poor boy… I hoped that this storm would not involve you.”

She got up and again faced the judge.

“Woman. The one you seek is lost to us. Our treasure stolen. Hidden from our view. We fear… I cannot tell you where to look. Act we cannot. But I can tell you where you have no need to go.”

Suddenly an army of spirits surrounded her while four spirit queens appeared before her in all their glory and spoke in one voice.

“Kill those that dared to rob us, and you shall have our favor.”
