It was a few months ago when I became interested in her for the first time. I decided against my better judgment that I should find myself an ordinary human I could feed on.

Being the only vampire in town, I knew I had to be careful about feeding on humans. People here are already suspicious of me. The way I look is different from how any other human would.

I prefer fresh blood directly from the vein. No animal could give me the satisfaction of the sweet blood that humans have. I tried animal blood before; I heard it was similar to vegetable salad, but for vampires. I thought it was funny, so I tried it. Certainly not my thing.

There are not a lot of rules when you're a vampire. Only one, and that is toย never reveal your true self to humans.

When you feed on them they will lose a lot of blood and usually, they'll faint after. So, I don't need to worry about exposing my existence, but if they don't faint and they figure out what you are, you'll just kill them. Simple as that.

Now you probably ask, "Why do you need to keep your existence to yourself?" Well, if all humans found out about us, we would all lose the only source of our living.

Some of the vampires bought or kidnapped humans for their own pleasure. Many of them are fascinated by the human world, so they live among the people. Everyone can do whatever they want after they leave ourย vampire world.

If I had to decide which world is better, I'd definitely say the human one. You have all the blood around you. You can do whatever you want here, and no one is watching your back. My parents watched my every move when I was still with them. Not to mention they only wanted to use me for their own benefit. My creation was not out of love. That word doesn't exist in our world.

Vampires cannot love.

We are the most selfish and gold-digging creatures. You are lucky if you can make even one friend because if you ask them to choose between you and blood. They will instantly choose blood.

Blood, money, and then you.

One night I decided I should go for a hunt. I was pretty thirsty, and it was the second week of not feeding. I was getting weaker. Usually, I feed on men since they are the easiest to catch. Women don't even look at me because I'm bewitching, and many of them are jealous and afraid that I'll make their husbands run to me as if I have an interest in such disgusting creations.

I was near an orphanage that night. I got curious about the humans living there. I even pity them. No one cares for them. Humans are sometimes eviler than a creature like me. They all wear happy masks and pretend to care when they never have. I can't imagine living such a miserable life.

From a distance, I could hear and smell all the people that were inside. No one was outside the building, so I thought this would be a suitable place to find tonight's dinner. No one could see me enter this place or leave.

But that place gave me the weirdest idea I've had in my long "dead" life, as I call it. Something that could resolve my problem for a long time.

Talia's pov

"Do you think I'd look good with black hair?" Stacey asked when she was looking into the mirror.

"I think you'll look beautiful with any hair color, but you know well enough that we can't dye our hair," I answered.

My roommate, Stacey, is my only friend at the orphanage. I'm an extremely shy person. I don't know how to make new friends or talk to people I don't know well.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

She's been here longer than me. She came here when she was one year old, and I was three years old. She always makes me happy, even when I'm not doing well.

Her parents were murdered. The killer came at night on a random day. He didn't notice her because her mother was fast enough to hide her under her bed. The neighbors got worried because they hadn't seen them the whole day, so they decided to check on them.

The pure horror they felt after they saw them lying on the ground dead. Stacey was hysterically crying next to them, trying to wake them up, but it was too late.

They cared for her for a few months, but they were too old, so she couldn't stay with them. Stacey has no idea who killed her parents or why he did so to this day. Many said they had problems with money, and they owed it to a lot of people. The truth will unfortunately never be found.

When I first came here, I was alone for a few days. All the kids were playing together, and I had no one. Until Stacey came to me and asked if I wanted a friend to play with. That's how our friendship started.

Regardless, we are the oldest girls in this orphanage who have not been adopted yet. We still have one year left. The possibility of our adoption is already out of the question. To be honest, we don't even want to be adopted.

After we leave this place, we'll look for a cozy apartment far away from here and finally start a new chapter in our lives. We deserve to have a happy ending.

"You are too kind to me, Talia," Stacey said, smiling at me.

"I'm not "too" kind to you; I'm just honest. After we leave, we should dye our hair together. A change would do us good." I smiled back.

After some chatting, we started to get ready for dinner. I put on some random black shirt with leggings, brushed my hair into a ponytail, and finally went to the cafeteria.

"I must say today's dinner is awful. What the heck did they put into this meat?" Stacey said in a confounded voice, exploring her meat with her fork.

"Maybe it's human flesh; who knows?" I chuckled and took my first bite. Stacey looked at me with disgust, and I started to laugh at the look on her face. She never liked my dark jokes.

"Look, Sophia is staring at you," Stacey announced, facing Sophia.

"So what? I don't care about her." I rolled my eyes and said, "It's not my fault Mr. Elwood likes me better than her."

"He would be an ass if he did. She's such a bitch, honestly." Stacey said as she played with her food. I loudly laughed and took another bite.

"Remember last year when she thought Alex liked her?" Stacey whispered, "I think he had his eyes actually on you the whole time."

"You mean Mr. Elwood's son?" I shook my head, "He is not exactly someone I would date." I said.

His son often visited our Orphanage. All the girls here were always trying to get his attention or talk to him. I don't understand what they see in him. He looks like every other guy. Nothing special.

"Oh really? Then who would you date?" Stacey put both of her hands on her cheeks, grinning at me.

"I don't know..." I mumbled.

Stacey's question made me think about my nonexistent dating life. Maybe I have high expectations, but Alex is not someone who is ready for a relationship. But who am I to judge when I still haven't gotten my first kiss. Maybe the prince on a white horse will never arrive.

Immediately after I stepped onto the doorstep of our room, I saw something weird, and big jump out of the window. It had a resemblance to a shadow, but it could jump and kind of looked like a figure. The window was wide open, and the wind blew the curtains to every side. We did leave the window open before we left, but something still didn't sit right.

"Tali, move." Stacey said, pushing me gently as she walked in. "Oh- sorry," I mumbled. I quickly walked to the window, but there was nothing there to my surprise. No shadow or a person.

"Did something happen?" Stacey asked as she sat down on her bed. "Uhm no. I just wanted to breathe some fresh air, that's all." I closed the window and changed into pajamas afterwards.

Stacey fell asleep sooner than me. There were many things on my mind that kept me from falling asleep. "Maybe it's because of my insomnia." I thought to myself, as I was turning around to find the best position to sleep.

After that night, I felt like someone was always behind my back. A shadow that was staring at me from the window, but every time I tried to look at it, there was nothing to see.

I didn't mention it to Stacey because she's easily startled, but I felt like I was going insane.
