Chapter 39 - Training begins

James had made it to Merabels office. The door opens wide for James. Stepping foot into the room, James was transported to a platform floating around in a vibrant, ever shifting land. All forms of creatures were just floating around. James noticed that they were all see through. James was staring at the sky, but Merabel was not the patient type. “You will have time to look at the astral creatures later. Right now it's time for your first real class.” After saying that, a desk and chair appeared in front of James. Merabel told James, “Sit down now and we can get started.” James didn't want to keep her waiting any longer, so he sat down. Getting started with the class, Merabel first started to introduce James to the beginnings of magic. “We don’t know how magic came into existence, but magic has been around since the beginning. Everything around us has a little bit of magic, no matter how small.” After that, she started to go into more details about the organization they were apart of. “The hidden truth was created by an unknown figure only known as the founder. The founder created the Hidden Truth in hopes of protecting the common people from all the horrors of the magical realm. Our motto is We give our lives to the unknown to keep the truth hidden. For as long as we stand, the mysteries of old remain buried, the darkness held at bay. While others walk in light, we guard the secrets in shadow—ensuring that the world remains blissfully unaware of the forces that would unravel it. The basics of our organization are that we contain the threats towards human civilization until they might hope to fight back. There is more to the organization, but thats for a later lesson. Now let's move onto practical training.”

The scene around James was distorted. Now instead of the ground being barren, James found himself in a dojo like structure. Merabel appeared with a book in her hands. The book's title was Purifying Light. Handing the book to James, Merabel told him, “You have an hour to read this book and learn how to cast it. After an hour, you will be going through a practice combat trial.” James grabbed the book and started reading the book. “Purifying light burns the target depending on the target's sin level. If the target has a positive sin level, the spell heals them instead." After reading the simple introduction, the spells incation was listed in both Runes and a common tongue any human could understand.

"By the radiance of truth, let sin ignite;

By the grace of mercy, let virtue heal.

After learning the spell incantation James started to practice the spell. This was the first spell James had formally learned. He had only ever forced the energy into other things by touch. James had attempted to force the energy into things multiple times without touching them but was unable to the whole time. The next page was the rune required to cast the spell.image [https://i.imgur.com/qAeVGoe.jpeg]

An hour later

The whole hour James was unable to cast the spell until after the hour marl. James figured out that the key was that the rune had to be perfect. Now that James had managed to cast his first true spell, he could be considered a true mage. James was able to successfully cast purifying light once in ten times due to the rune. Merabel appeared in front of James and said, “Times up. Your combat trial will start soon.” She disappeared after, and a gnoll took her place. The Gnoll screeched and raised its club. The gnoll rushed towards James. James attempted to cast the spell, but it was unsuccessful. Instead, James dodged to the side, barely getting out of the way of the club. The club hit a pillar instead and broke it. The pillar splintered into many small pieces. The gnoll turned around and started its rush again. James started to cast the spell again but got interrupted.

The gnoll speed suddenly increased. It must have been testing James earlier and now he was ready to rush in for the kill. James wanted to dodge but slipped and fell on the ground. The gnolls club was about to smash down on James head, but he rolled out of the way at the last second. Instead, his arm was crushed and unusable. James didn’t feel a thing for the time being due to adrenaline. The adrenaline gave James a clear head, and this spellcasting attempt worked.

The gnoll caught on a golden fire. It started to roll around and scream in hopes of extinguishing it. The screaming lasted for a few minutes until it suddenly stopped. James knew he had managed to survive again, but now his arm started to feel like a steam roller ran over it. The pain was too much; James passed out.
