Book 1 : The lock, chapter 26 : The Maverick and the Urbane

David woke up in the classroom feeling more confused then ever

Things are spiraling more and more out of control and he was still trying to find his bearings.

This time, he managed to at least not feel the pain of dying for a bit longer

Also, he has seen so many secrets, he was sure that none but him have seen how the young elites of the 5 houses fight.

Still feeling disoriented from the time reset his eye caught one of his fellow class mates.

The millers doughter was sitting there, looking quite uninterested and emotionless.

Thinking back how this scheming shapeshifter caused him to fail so much pain again made his anger boil over.

"Don't fret, another chance will present itself soon enough." a voice said in a calm and gentle matter.

"A nemesis? Bring it on! We thrive on competition and adversity!" another one said as eager as can be.

As he scanned the classroom to look who was talking to him, his gaze landed on a painting of the young lord, and he couldn't help but feel captivated. The vivid portrayals of the lord's early battles and hardships stirred something within him, striking a chord deep in his heart.

Following the feeling, he arrived at a place inside himself that responded.

"The only way to truly grow is to step outside of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown"

That something deep inside, and part of him him spoke to with a flair for the dramatic.

Another part of him spoke to him in an entirety different way

"Our collective mindset can be focused on proactively considering the needs of others and using our renewed chance to think creatively about how we can be of service."

His face twisted in confusion and alarm as he came to the realization that there were now two distinct voices in his head, competing for attention. It was a jarring and unsettling experience, leaving him feeling disoriented and unsure of how to proceed. The sudden presence of these two conflicting perspectives left him with a sense of unease and foreboding. He knew that he was facing a new and difficult challenge, one that would require him to summon all his strength and resources to overcome.

As he sensed the two distinct voices in his head, he also felt a strange and familiar pull towards something else. It was as if fate was once again at work, guiding him towards a new path. Despite the confusion and uncertainty he felt, his mind refused to focus on familiar choices like farming or hunting. Instead, he found himself fixated on the elements, and the blue rock that seemed to unsettle him in a way he couldn't quite explain.

----------------------------------------

Despite the two voices vying for his attention, he chose to ignore them and instead focused on the lessons of the past.

He knew better than to anger the whims of fate and instead surrendered himself to its bidding.

David fixated on the blue rock, trying to comprehend its cold, stony nature that chilled him to the core.

David sat in his desk, staring down at his hands in shame.

He had been so engrossed in his own thoughts that he didn't even realize the teacher was standing right in front of him.

"I was curious about the water element," David hesitated for a moment before interrupting the teacher. "I've heard that it has something that is a deep shining blue, as solid as rock. Do you know anything about it?"

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

The teacher's eyes sparked with interest, and he nodded. "Ah, you must be referring to ice. Yes, water can freeze and transform into ice."

Perplexed, David asked, "But how can it be ice? I always thought ice was the coldest thing we could imagine, so I thought it was just like the cold rain in a winter evening, but now I'm confused."

The teacher chuckled and shook his head. "It's not just any cold. Ice symbolizes an intense cold that can turn water into a solid, creatures into statues, and freeze even the warmest of hearts."

David's eyes widened with amazement as the teacher went on to explain the power and symbolism behind the water element and its frozen counterpart. He felt his understanding of the five elements snap into place, connecting the fiery forge melting metal with the freezing cold turning things solid.

With this realization, he felt at ease, the strings of fate loosended their grip on him, and he was free again.

----------------------------------------

The two conflicting voices within him added to David's problems. He hadn't even solved his first issue yet, and now this.

But he was relieved that he still remembered how to escape the dungeon.

He knew for a fact that he would be able to slip away if he followed his previous plan.

This time, he just had to get away before he got to the guards.

Using the wagon, David slipped away from class once more.

Seeing the by now familiar faces of the farmer and the farmer's wife it was time to turn on the charm to get a ride out of here.

"The teacher wants us to unlock our class tonight and we have to spend the day with an advanced user of the class."

The same story played itself out, and he was allowed another lecture on farming.

This time he knew damn well just how effective his [Attini] could farm.

It pained his hard to hurt the his classmates father, but he could not stay ant it was time to make his escape.

Long before he reached the guards at the gates, David began his little speech.

"I would love to have a job in which I don't have to work at all, nature just grows by itself.

And the animals can take care of themself, and the wolves will make sure they don't run to far away.

Even ants can do it, how hard could it be? That would be the perfect job for me!"

Each time he uttered a word, he observed another nerve getting hit.

David's words infuriated the farmer as he saw it as a lazy approach to farming.

Having devoted his life to farming, he believed that farming required hard work and dedication.

Nature needed to be managed and maintained to produce a good harvest.

He saw David's ideas as foolish and disrespectful to the profession.

In a fit of rage, the farmer stopped the cart and kicked David out, warning him never to disrespect farming again.

Let alone, he saw the cart drive away with its driver still boiling with rage, and his wife trying to calm him down.

----------------------------------------

David ran through the alleys with a smug expression on his face, feeling the thrill of freedom course through his veins.

He had an inkling that he forgot something, but the desire to escape was too strong for him to care.

As the wall loomed in sight, he knew all he had to do was climb over it when nobody was watching.

He checked left and right before sprinting towards the wall, using the wash lines to jump up and perform his first successful pull-up.

Finally, he made it over the wall, panting and sweating with exhaustion.

After successfully scaling the city wall, David was gasping for air and trying to catch his breath, completely unaware of the goblin stealthily creeping up behind him.
