Today, we are leaving Aldrion and heading to Elzaran. We need to hurry because winter is coming soon. Winter is harsh here in the south since it's near the sea.
As we left the capital of Aranthor, we traveled from town to town, and all we saw was poverty and despair. It was the opposite of the capital. Families were even selling their children to slave merchants just to survive for at least one month. The local lords were increasing taxes as they pleased and living in luxury like the nobles in the capital. We arrived at the border town that separated Elzaran and Aranthor. Since it was already late, we decided to sleep in this town and enter Elzaran tomorrow morning. Before we went to sleep, I needed to talk to Josh.
"Mr. Richard, are you looking for me?" Josh asked, approaching with a curious expression.
"Yes, Josh, take a seat," I replied, gesturing to a nearby chair.
Josh sat down, looking at me intently. "Is everything alright, Mr. Richard?"
"Tomorrow we will be entering Elzaran, and I want you to remember what I am about to tell you and never forget it, okay?"
Josh nodded, his curiosity piqued. "Yes, Mr. Richard."
"In Elzaran, golden elves are like gods, so do not show any disrespect towards them. Even if you are dissatisfied with something, just remain silent," I instructed, my tone serious.
"I understand, sir. What about dark and forest elves?" Josh asked, leaning forward.
"With them, you can act normally," I replied, a bit more relaxed.
Josh's eyes widened. "I've heard stories about the golden elves. Are they really that powerful?"
"Indeed, they are," I said, nodding. "Their influence and status are unmatched in Elzaran."
Josh seemed to absorb the information, his expression thoughtful. "And what about the customs there? Is there anything else I should be aware of?"
"Just follow my lead, and you'll be fine," I assured him. "We need to be on our best behavior."
"Thank you, Mr. Richard," Josh said, his face showing a mix of determination and apprehension.
"Good. You can now go to sleep," I said, giving him a reassuring smile.
Early in the morning, we continued our journey to Elzaran and arrived at the border. As soon as we arrived, we were approached by a handsome man with green hair and green eyes. Josh was already amazed by the looks of this man approaching us.
"Good day, sir. My name is Captain Thorne of the Elzaran Border Guard. As per the laws of Elzaran, I must inspect your goods to ensure there are no dangerous substances or prohibited items entering our country. Your cooperation is appreciated."
The guards carefully began examining the contents of the carriages, checking each item with meticulous care.
"These weapons and iron seem to be in order, but I need to verify that you have the appropriate permits for their trade within Elzaran."
"Yes, sir Thorne, I have them," I answered while showing the guard my permits.
He continued his inspection, looking through crates and barrels.
"Spices, clothing, rice—these are acceptable. Do you have an inventory list I can cross-reference to confirm everything matches your documentation?"
"Ah, yes, sir. Here," I handed the guard a document showing the goods we had.
Since when was Elzaran this strict? It must be because of the civil war.
Captain Thorne's expression grew serious as he noticed a group of slaves among the goods.

"I must inform you that Elzaran has abolished all forms of slavery, and slave merchants are strictly prohibited from entering or conducting business within our borders. You will need to release these individuals immediately and provide proof that they are no longer under your possession. Failure to comply will result in your immediate expulsion from Elzaran."
What did he say? Maybe something is wrong with my ears. I turned towards my companions, and they were as dumbfounded as I was. We are entering Elzaran here, right? Did we get the directions wrong? According to what he said, if I don't release these slaves, I will not be allowed to enter the country? But that will be a loss. I can just pretend to release them and leave them in Aranthor with some of my companions, and later when we return, we can get them back.
So I signaled to my companion and did everything as planned.
After completing his inspection, the guard nodded.
"Aside from the issue with the slaves, your goods are in compliance. Please address this matter promptly so we can avoid any further complications. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Safe travels within Elzaran, and may your trade be prosperous."
"Thank you, sir Thorne."
"Mr. Richard, what was that?" Josh asked, his voice trembling slightly.
"I think this is because of the civil war," I answered.
"Maybe they are trying to keep out slave merchants who might take advantage of the unrest and kidnap their people."
"Good morning, sir. You can call me Nana, and I will be your guide while you are in Elzaran. If you have any questions or are dissatisfied with anything, feel free to ask me."
A beautiful dark elf woman approached us and introduced herself. We had no choice but to introduce ourselves as well.
"So, you are a merchant, right? Can I please see the inventory checklist?" Nana asked with a kind smile.
I handed her the list.
"I see, okay!"
I am confused here. Since when did Elzaran have guides? Am I being tricked?
As we entered the first town of Elzaran, we were all stunned. The streets were clean, and the people were happy. Children played joyfully in the streets, their laughter echoing through the air. The houses were well-maintained, and the markets were bustling with activity. Vendors sold fresh produce, baked goods, and various handmade items. The aroma of delicious food filled the air, tempting us at every corner. We approached the locals, who greeted us warmly and eagerly purchased our spices and clothes. We moved to the next town, and the experience was the same—clean streets, happy people, and thriving markets.
"Ms. Nana, can you tell me more about these towns? They seem so vibrant and well-kept," I asked as we traveled.
"Certainly, Mr. Richard. Each town in Elzaran is known for its unique charm and specialties, all thanks to our Queen's wise ideas," Nana explained with enthusiasm. "For example, the first town we visited, Aloria, is famous for its craftsmen and pottery. The Queen initiated a program to support local craftsmen, ensuring they have the resources they need to create high-quality goods. The people there take great pride in their work, and you can see it in the quality of their products."
"And the food here, it's incredibly delicious. Is there a reason for that?" I asked, savoring a piece of freshly baked bread.
"Yes, our Queen implemented advanced agricultural techniques and supported local farmers. Our climate and fertile soil allow us to grow a variety of crops, and our culinary traditions have been refined over generations. Every town has its own special dishes that you must try," Nana said with a smile.
As we continued our journey, we passed through several more towns, each more impressive than the last. There was Eldoria, known for its music and festivals, where children danced in the streets and musicians played cheerful tunes. "The Queen established music schools and organized festivals to celebrate our rich cultural heritage, bringing joy and unity to our people," Nana remarked.
Then there was Veridia, with its lush gardens and beautiful parks, where families picnicked and children played under the shade of ancient trees. "Our Queen loves nature and has invested in creating green spaces in every town, promoting a healthy and beautiful environment for all," Nana added.
"Ms. Nana, I thought there was a civil war in this country," I said as we traveled.
"Civil war? I don't know what you are talking about, sir. There has never been a civil war in our country," Nana replied, looking genuinely puzzled.
"I see. It looks like most of the citizens here are happy," I remarked.
"Yes, our Queen is wise, and everything is all because of her," Nana said with pride.
Queen Elizabeth, I didn't know you had such a brilliant daughter.
We had passed most towns and were almost at the capital, and our spices, salt, and clothing had run out. Our rice supply was nearly exhausted as well. As for iron and weapons, they can only be sold to the palace. We booked an inn and separated from Ms. Nana. She said she would see us in the morning.
"Mr. Richard, elves are beautiful, and I think I saw golden elves along the way. Didn't you say they only live in the capital?" Josh asked.
"I don't know either. It seems things have changed here, and I don't know how the crown princess did it, but..."
"But?" Josh asked, looking more intrigued.
"It seems Aranthor is really in danger without even realizing it," I said.
"What do you mean?" Josh pressed.
"You saw the state Aranthor is in, right? I think the king might be planning something to involve Elzaran in their own conflict, but I don't think things will go as they planned."
"I see. So, sir, have you met the crown princess?" Josh's eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"Yes, I have. She is stunningly beautiful with golden hair and a nice figure. You will see her tomorrow. You might fall for her," I said, smiling at Josh's youthful enthusiasm.
