"In order for you to be able to survive here you must know how to fight against Spirits," said Kongming.
"They were very strong, without Akiza I could not have done it," said Serph.
"There were times I need Serph to help me too," said Akiza.
"What if I told you there was a special style that dealt against Spirits?" said Kongming.
"Is there such a thing?" Serph asked.
"Yes, I created the skill long ago. To this day, it is kept in the Vault of West Wind Academy that is normally reserved for Disciples," Kongming explained. "It is called the Shinmei-ryu style."
Kongming then took out swords and handed one to each of them. "This is a versatile style that allows you to use a one handed sword in a two handed way or a one handed way," he explained. "There are also hand to hand forms to it as well."
"But how is it that this is better against Spirits?" asked Akiza.
"Serph, Armatize" said Kongming.
Serph activated a small shield in front of him. Kongming did a swing from a distance. The shield was cut in two. "A defensive type was destroyed in an instant," said Serph.
"But it does not affect the person," said Kongming. "You received no injuries as a result of that strike.
"But that means it cannot be used on people since it only hits Armatization and Spirits," said Akiza.
"That's where you're wrong," said Kongming. "This is only one move from Shinmei-ryu. There are many others."
Kongming projected his Divine Energy and they watched as a rock was blown apart. "You can deal as much damage as any other attack."
Kongming spent a lot of time to teach Akiza and Serph all the moves to Shinmei-ryu. But Akiza could not tell how long it had taken because there was no day or night in the Immortal Realm, just fog. Akiza tried counting how many times she slept, but it was probably at least a hundred.
Serph had a much easier time since he was used to swords already. On the other hand, Akiza took longer since she focused more on to the hand to hand moves and was learning to properly use a sword for the first time. At the end of the week, Kongming gave a test. "You both must each slay at least a Spirit Stage or above on your own."
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
The two had fought together to take advantage of the slow speed of Spirits, but they now had to hunt one on their own. They went off into the forest with Kongming observing them. HOWL. It was the ice wolf. Akiza had found the ice wolf that she had seen defeat the griffon. It released a chilling aura.
HOWL. The wolf made a battle cry. Akiza stood with both hands on her sword. The wolf leaped towards Akiza. Akiza backed off to dodge the attack, but the wolf spun around, hitting Akiza with its tail. BOOM. Akiza was knocked off her feet. The wolf had chained its attacks together.
Akiza used Phoenix Steps to circle around to the side of the wolf. "Rising Phoenix Strike!" BOOM. The wolf was hit by a massive blue flame and it curved into the shape of a crescent. But it wasn't enough. The fur on the wolf was not even singed.
HOWL. The wolf howled in anger. Akiza needed to use the sword to pierce the tough skin of the wolf. Akiza infused her Internal Energy into the sword and swung it. The wolf lowered itself to avoid the attack and pounced at Akiza. Akiza infused Internal Energy into her fist and released it in a burst to knock back the wolf. Akiza chased after the wolf. As it landed on its back, Akiza thrusted the sword into the wolf's chest.
The wolf struggled and Akiza was knocked away. The wolf then got up, but it was heavily bleeding. The wolf took a defensive stance and lowered its head. It was the freezing attack! The wolf blew out a cold wind. Akiza used an overhead slash from the distance. It split the breath of the wolf in two, scattering its cold breath to the sides.
Akiza ran forward. The wolf leaped in for a slash with its claws, Akiza backed off. The wolf spun again. Akiza paralleled the sword to herself to block the attack. The power of the wolf still nearly knocked her off her feet. She was too light. However, the wolf was slowing down. It was still bleeding out. Akiza just needed to last until the wolf bled to death.
Akiza took a defensive stance with her sword, holding it parallel to her eyes. The wolf rushed forward. Akiza aimed it for mouth of the wolf. The moment it leaped foward, "Rising Phoenix Strike!" she shouted jumping forward.
SSHHLUCK. The sword slid into the mouth of the wolf, piercing it through the roof of its mouth and into its brain. Akiza's thrust had killed the wolf.
