Chapter 8 Epic Dissapointment

The guild master led Chester to a large training area. One wall was lined with training dummies, most of them were just large wooden logs planted into the ground. The logs were covered in marks, from being chopped slashed and stabbed. there were a few that were even equipped with a wooden sword and shield, strapped to a thick beam sticking out of the log. In one corner of the room there was a pile of padded leather armor, filed with weights (rocks). These were used to help gain stats in strength, and it also helped to increase stats in agility. there was padded weight armor for the torso, arms and legs. Along another wall, there were racks of wooden weapons. Swords, daggers, axes and hammers. There were also a couple of racks with iron weapons. A dozen fighters were training, some stopped to greet the guild master. Most of the people in the training room, were training on their own, a few were sparring. Despite the many windows high up on the walls, the room was hot and sweaty.

The guild master took Chester to a side room within the training area. It was a smaller room, but big enough for a group of people to train. The guard captain walked with Chester to the center of he empty room, and began his tutorial. He walked over to a weapon rack, and picked up an iron sword.

"Weapon proficiencies are acquired by using weapons"

He gave a few swings with the sword, into the air.

"Skills are acquired by leveling up a class, by preforming that exact skill, or by repeatedly preforming an action that resembles the skill"

The guild master walked to the edge of the room, held the sword to his side, as if ready to swing it, and got into position as if he was going to run.

"Blade Dash"

As soon as he said the words, the guild master slid across the room in a flash, swinging his sword.

"Classes are acquired by fulfilling certain requirements, or by using a class stone. As your stats are now, even a class stone wouldn't be enough to get you a class"

The guild master walked back from the side of the room to Chester.

"Stats are increased by leveling up a class, and by using them to their limit"

He pointed at the floor.

"Lets see you do a pushup"

Up too this point, Chester was getting very exited. Thinking about skills, and classes. But now, his heart sank.

"A pushup?"

"Yeah, a pushup. now."

The guild master said that last word with some power in his voice. All of a sudden, Chester was not sure what he got himself into. Lying down on the ground, Chester started to push. Half way through his first pushup, he received a notification.

You have preformed a feat of strength. strength +1

After struggling for a bit, he was finally able to finish the first pushup.

strength +1

Most of his belly was still fully resting on the ground. I guess it is easy to increase low stats. Chester was about to lie back down, and try to do another pushup, when the guild master stopped him.

"Don’t move"

"What?, I thought I was doing pushups"

"There is more to work on here than just your strength"

Chester’s arms started to feel weaker.

You have pushed your body to its limits. Endurance +1

"With your endurance, even a weak kick would do a lot of damage"

Chester’s arms were starting to shake.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Endurance +1

"As a heavy armor fighter, your main stats will be Strength, Vitality, and Endurance"

Endurance +1

Chester, reaching his own limits, couldn’t hold on any longer.

"I can't do it any more"

He was about to let go and totally lie down on the ground, however, the guild master held out the iron sword, just under Chester’s neck.

"Don't move"

Endurance +1

Chester let out a grunt.

you are panicking

Chester was sweating profusely. His teeth, were clenched, and his body was shaking.

Endurance +1

Chester started to cry. He closed his eyes, and rolled to his side, away from the blade, flopping to the ground. He brought his arms up to his face for protection, and lied there, crying.

"Are you ok?"

*sob* "Don’t hit me" *sob*

"I'm not going to hit you, so get up"

Chester calmed down a bit, but still did not stand.

"I said get up"

The guild master said this with more force. Chester slowly got to his feet. The guild master looked at Chester for a bit, thinking to himself. Eventually he walked over to a weapon rack, and took a second sword. He handed the sword to Chester.

"You will be practicing with a sword until you get the fighter class, then you should switch over to a spear, or lance. You wont have any range using a sword with your size, but a lance should suit you perfectly"

The guild master grabbed the hand of Chester that was holding the sword, and moved it up.

"You hold it like this"

Stepping back, the guild master told Chester

"Take a swing"

Chester reached back with the sword, and swung it like a girl throws a baseball.

"Try swinging it like this"

The guild master swung his sword into the air. Chester tried it, and ended up repeating what he did the first time.

"You'll just have to practice it until you get the proficiency. proficiencies gain levels faster when they are used against something, even more when used against a stronger opponent. Try to hit me"

Chester got ready to swing, but was hesitating.

"Don’t be afraid, there’s not a chance in hell that you will hit me. Your stats are so low, I probably wouldn't even need to try to block"

Chester closed his eyes, turned his head to the side, and swung the sword. It did not even come close to hitting the guild master, so the guild master didn't even have to lift his sword.

"Why are you closing your eyes? Keep them open. Look at me and try again"

Chester looked the guild master right into his eyes, lifted the sword, and, right before he gave a swing, Quickly closed his eyes and turned his head to the side. The guild master stood there again, just looking at Chester, thinking to himself.

Next the guild master went to an armor rack, and picked up a shield. He walked back to Chester.

"Look, this is how you hold a shield"

He held the shield in front of him, facing Chester.

"Now you try"

The guild master gave Chester the shield, and took back the sword. Chester did a fairly good job at holding the shield. Especially compared to how he held the sword.

"Keep the shield in place"

The guild master lightly tapped the shield with the sword. Chester let out a scream.

"AAAAhh"

"You don't have to scream, I'm not going to hurt you"

Chester pulled the shield close to his body, and tensed up.

"You need to hold the shield out a bit, that way you will be effected less by the force of a blow, unless there's a really strong attack, then you want to hold it close."

Chester reluctantly held the shield out. His knees were shaking.

"I'm going to hit you a little harder now"

As the guild master lightly swung the sword, Chester closed his eyes, pulled the shield back to his body, and tensed up. The guild master stopped in the middle of the swing, looking at Chester Well, even if hes like that, if he takes enough hits to the shield, he should get the proficiency... The guild master swung and hit the shield. Chester let out a scream

"AAAhh"

And dropped the shield onto the ground.

"You must never drop your shield"

"AAAhh"

Chester let out another scream, and let his body drop to the floor. He curled up into a ball (as much as he could), and started to cry again.

"What the hell?"

"AAAhh. Don't hit me!"

"I'm not going to hit you"

"Hnnn"

Chester stayed in his position for another minute until he calmed down.

"Stand up"

Chester started to slightly move.

"Stand up"

The guild master said it with more force, and Chester finally stood up. Chester stood there, shoulders pulled up, arms to his side, and he was staring at the ground with his head turned to the side.

"I'm sorry, but you wont be able to join the guild for free. In fact, I don't think you should even try to become a fighter. I am a very good judge of character, and you are just not cut out for it."

Chester just stood there, some tears starting to fall off of his cheeks, onto his triple chin.

"If you are really intent on going into combat, you would have to be a back-line fighter, like a mage or an archer. And seeing as you don't even have a stat for mana, you only option would be to try and joining the archery guild"

I don't have a mana stat?
