Chapter 13: Cafeteria

"I'm sowwy~" Lucy apologized with a giant red bump on her head.

"Honestly... Do you know how long it takes to maintain my perfect fur? And you just had to ruin it!"

"What can I say... You were just too cute! Just because I'm a Witch doesn't mean I don't like cute things too! I'm still a young maiden!"

Nell could only roll her eyes at the soppy act.

"Let's just get this done. You need to rest before school, young maiden."

"Yes Ma'am!"

Getting up from the ground Lucy and Nell left the bedroom and looked at the ruins. Already, it looked quite a bit nicer than before.

With 1 of the 5 ruined buildings gone and the resource collection buildings scattered around, the place already felt a bit more lively.

A mine on the outskirts of the ruins, a small lumberyard along with a farm on the other side, and a short Obelisk in the middle of it all.

Please walk up and collect your resources manually. Whenever civilians move in you can give them jobs to auto-collect your resources for you.

"I see. Manage."

Above all of the collectors was a giant number representing how much of their specific resource, all above the 500 mark.

Before Lucy looked at what she needed to build the Radar and all the other stuff she went around collecting everything.

All of her resources capped at a nice 500.

"That's convenient. It's been about 12 hours so I guess they generate 1k every 24 hours or so? Right, Build!"

What would you like to build?

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"To build all 3 it equals out to my current max resources. Whoever made this System is actually quite nice. If this was a game it'd take 100 more of 1 resource so I had to wait or spend gems..." Lucy mused to herself.

"What are you mumbling about over there?"

"Nothing, nothing. Build Treasury!"

"Build Mana Reservoir!"

"Build Radar!"

"Lucille. You are aware you can build them all at once, right?" Nell asked.

"Hehe, yeah."

Quickly collecting what little of her resources were left over, the duo left their base and returned to Lucy's room.

For the first time today, Lucy was going to willingly fall asleep. She had a few hours before school started but really had nothing else to do. Plus, sleep is like a cheat code to make time go faster.

Lucy manipulates time as a Chronomancer so you know it's true whenever she thinks it. Her thought process was very simple.

The quicker school starts, the quicker school ends. And the quicker school ends, the quicker she gets to see Sora. What would she do after that? She'd figure that out later. An Invader will probably show up or something to keep her busy. Or she'll do the impossible and actually make friends.

Why does fighting aliens sound more realistic than talking to other people?

...

A couple hours later at the bright and early time of 6:45 AM, Lucille was walking to school with Nell chilling in her bag.

"This place is rather busy, isn't it?" Nell observed.

Lucy nodded in agreement while looking around.

Buses full of kids, people driving to work, along with a few oddballs like Lucy who were walking to work or school. It was certainly a lively city. It made Lucy feel happy but also a little nervous. Intrusive thoughts of people finding out she's a Witch despite knowing full well something like that wouldn't happen unless she messed up really bad and such things.

"I'm not really used to being around this many people. Guess that's just early morning in a big city for you."

Curious about those words, Nell turned to face Lucy.

"Have you not attended school in a large city before?"

"Uhm..."

Scratching her cheek, Lucy shook her head.

"To be honest with you. This is my first time attending a school in general. Because me and my mom traveled a lot to avoid the church's gaze I've never had the chance to. What about you and Sora? Surely, you two attended school at some point, right?"

Nell paused to think about it for a while.

"A long time ago, yes. About 50 years ago, we and the other Operators attended a high school in Shinjuku while that was the sector we were in charge of protecting." Nell said with a weary smile.

Those were good memories for her but also very bitter ones now.

"A team, huh? It sounds really nice to have teammates but also scary?"

"Hmm? How so? Are you scared they'll hate you if you find out you're a witch?"

Lucy shrugged.

"There's that I guess but it's more so a matter of Identity. My family is full of Witches, all very powerful in their own right so if my Identity is ever revealed it wouldn't matter. If someone tried to hold my family against me they'd just be getting themselves killed. If I had teammates though. Normal humans can't use any magic when they aren't transformed... It's scary."

"Hehe. You sound just like our old leader. She had the same worries as you until she actually had a team. You wanna know what her solution was?"

"Hmm?"

"Her solution was to simply become strong enough to protect them. While she might have failed, you have all the tools to succeed."

Lucy looked quite surprised at such a solution. It was Naïve. Extremely so but Nell wasn't really wrong. A system to assist in her growth, talent in martial arts, and a deep understanding of magic. If she wasn't capable of such a thing then who was?

"I guess you're right. Let's pick up our pace. The number of people is increasing."

Thankfully, only people with a high amount of magic could hear an Agent like Nell talk so talking in public like this wasn't an issue.

...

Entering into a full sprint, Lucy quickly made it to her school in just 10 minutes. She arrived quite early but that was intentional. She really didn't wanna have a repeat of yesterday.

She wasn't the only one. A number of other students were also quite early and were chatting in the cafeteria where they were placed to wait. Some were eating their breakfast at school, others were just there for the ride.

Of the dozen or so kids, Lucy actually remembered a handful of them. The ones of note were that pretty boy and Sayaka who were sitting in a group of 3 along with another girl.

Before Lucy could even find a place to sit, Sayaka had noticed her and called her over.

"It seems the first person I've interacted with at this school is the social butterfly... Why do I feel tired all of a sudden?"

"Fufu, good luck Lucille. I'll be inside the base." Nell cheered before vanishing.
