Chapter 10: Learning the Magic System

“Pay Attention Cosmo.”

Ms. Flying tiger said as she smacked me in the head with the ruler. The pain wasn't supposed to be that painful since worse things have done damage to me. And yet the pain of it was like a giant bee stung my head, sending a shock throughout my system.

I was about to protest yet when she looked at me with those flaming crimson eyes, i acted like nothing happened. Observing her, i notice that she was in her Human form, obvious that she can transform. She's beautiful in any sensible standards.

Short red hair that extends above her shoulder with it being the same color as her eyes, Crimson red. An Oval-shaped face with red lipsticks enough to seduce any guy. To make her even more stunning, he had an hour glass figure with a big bust. Too bad her personality is terrible.

“Now where were we? Ah yes, the magic system of the western continent.”

Nodding, i pay attention even more than i have heard bits and pieces of it from Mr. Samuel. In his drunken state was i able to extract information from him.

“How the magic works on the continent is simple yet layered in mystery. Nobody knows how it formed and came to be. Some [Magnus Magus] believe that the system formed by itself. A natural phenomenon that happened over the course of a million years. While some of the religious zealots, particularly the [Silvan Theocracy]. Believed that the [Deus] they worship, the [Deus Vitae], was the one who created the Magic system along with everything else in this world. But its not factual as it contradicts other events that happened in history. For example, its already a proven fact that there was a war waged by the gods tens of thousands of years ago based on historical texts and accounts from various sources. The faction of the [Deus Vitae] was the one who won, thus healing the battle ruined world we lived on. Though it did take another tens of thousands of years to do so but that besides the point.”

“Um, Ms. Flying Tiger, aren’t we talking about the Magic System?”

“Hmm, its seems so. Alright then, ill teach history in another lesson then.”

She moved on from her little history lesson and moved on to the main of the lesson. How and what is the magic system is? History of the western continent is interesting and all but I'm more curious of what the magic system is. Ill study it later on but for now, the magic system.

“Going back to topic, the magic system that here in the western continent is [Systema]. further dividing it into 2 types of [Systema]. That is [Ordo Systema], which is the orthodox system of the continent. A good example of this is the current gods ruling over the continent, the various [Deus]. The good gods in simple terms. Whether they are 'good' is up for you to decide.”

“It is the main system which various people around the continent use since the system doesn’t require extreme methods to rank up.”

So that's how it is… Ignoring one of her sentences which was plain blasphemy, i kind of understood how magic works here.

“Besides [Ordo Systema] there is the [Chaos Systema]. The [Systema] of the evil gods of the continent, where the defeated gods derive power from. We don't know much about them in present times, all their names and any semblance that pertains to their existence is gone. The [Silvan Theocracy] wiped off any information about them. All we know is that they once existed, and that they were once called [False Deus].”

“Why was it erased?”

“Your going to have to figure it out yourself, kid.”

She said as she gave me a smirk and continued on with her lecture.

Well, alright then. I sat confused about why she said it but i moved on as i can think about it later. So I sat at attention as she continued.

“Lets move on from the gods and into the power systems for us mortals. Under both the [Ordo Systema] and the [Chaos Systema], it is further divided into [Class]. A [Class] is something that allows you to achieve certain feats a mortal cannot. If a mortal hit a boulder with his fist, then his fist would be the one breaking. But if a mortal who has somehow obtained a [Class], like [Swordsman] or [Knight, or any strength based [Class]. Then the boulder will either be in half or crushed."

“There are several [Classes] you can choose from but i will limit it to the [Ordo Systema].”

Ms. Flying tiger conjured a board in the air and it displayed the various categories of [Classes] known to the continent.

[Classes]

1. [Swordsman]

2. [Assassin]

3. [Knight]

4. [Berserker]

5. [Martial Artist]

6. [Archer]

7. [Mage]

8. [Alchemist]

9. [Blacksmith]

10. [Tamer]

11. [Warlock] or [Witch]

"Be reminded that these are the only paths one can take. These [Classes] are the most popular and well known in the continent but there are still more obscure one’s out there. Dont think of this list as the end all be all of [Systema]."

“Uh, I’m confused, isn’t [Swordsman] a [Class] in and of itself.”

Puzzled as I was, I didn’t understand what she meant by categories of [Classes].

“Indeed, it can be a little confusing but basically like [Swordsman] it’s indeed both a [Class] and category. The lists of [Classes] i have shown are both the beginner classes for newbie users of [Systema] yet at the same time it is also a road to which leads to variations of those said [Classes]. It is a road that leads to various places but also an entrance test of sort.”

“Entrance test?”

Ms flying tiger nodded and said.

“Yes, an entrance test. Testing to see if you are capable of advancing any further in the [Systema]. A way to weed out the weak from the strong, per se. If let’s say you pick [Swordsman], and then fail to understand the essence of the [Class] or understand what it means to be a [Swordsman]. Then you will be forever stuck in that class until you truly understand what the class implies.”

Her voice was cold and uncaring as she said it. Implying many things but the main one i got out of it was that, if my comprehension of the class isn’t enough, then I’m pretty much screwed. But she moved on as if she said nothing important.

“To advance in [Systema] is to be one amongst untold millions, their efforts being forgotten in the sands of time. Some will forever be just a [Swordsman] while some may have the grit to advance further. And yet to advance further is to climb a harder, much bigger mountain than the previous. Forget the promise of power, for there is no such thing, only an endless road filed with despair and agony.”

She said, looking at me in my eyes, seeming to peer into my very soul she declared.

“You will definitely die cosmos.”

Well, that’s not a nice thing to say. Sure, her words may have some merit, but she didn’t need to mention that part. Bewildered, I tried opening my mouth, yet I had no retort to what she said. I just gave a sigh in response.

She nodded and continued on her lecture.

“To obtain an opportunity to acquire the power of [Systema], you must first find the corresponding [Lexicon] to a class.”

Confused, I asked.

“Lexicon?”

“Yes [Lexicon].”

Ms. Tiger then put aside the board and conjured up another thing. Yet this time she seemed to be focusing her all on conjuring whatever she was about to create. Beads of sweat started to accumulate on her forehead as her eyes continued to focus on her right hand.

A little while later, a book appeared out of thin air, floating just above her right hand. With a deadpan face, she looked towards me and floated the book above my desk.

The surface of the book was blank, decorated with golden brocades at the side while the color of the book itself was akin to flowing lava. The more i tried peering into it, the more i felt that I was looking at the sun itself, making me feel it can burn my eyes out.

“Stop it, kid your going to hurt yourself.”

Ms. Tiger’s voice then snapped me out of my daze. Forcing me to look back at her.

“Look any further and it will burn your eyes before you get to even react.”

Frightened, i asked her why it was so.

“Because it’s the same as understanding something that is beyond your comprehension and the difference with this one is that the complexity of it is enough to kill a man.”

Understanding, I no longer looked at the [Lexicon] and focused all my attention on Ms. Tiger. I really don’t feel like going blind any time soon.

“So now what you are seeing is a [Lexicon]. How its formed is pretty simple on the surface. [Lexicons] are created when the individual has a deep enough understanding of his said [Class]. Thus forming the thing you are seeing now. With the formation of it, it is then able to be passed on to other people who may need it themself.”

“Wait, so if it has the complete understanding of the person, then couldn’t the person who finds it understand what the [Class] means? Defeating the whole point of advancing.”

“Good question.”

She snapped her fingers and the [Lexicon] in front of me opened, allowing me to see its contents. But the mere sight of what was inside it was enough to literally make me feel that my brain was melting, making me look away.

“Difficult isn’t it?” she said.

“Very.”

Snapping her fingers once more, the [Lexicon] closed.

“With the example I have shown you, it means one thing. Let’s say that a [Class] is a mountain. Finding the [Lexicon] is the same as finding the location of said mountain and even information on how to climb it. Yet reading it and understanding it is a different matter. Putting it into practice is even harder.”

“The person may know how to claim that mountain, but the problem is that the guide to climbing it is all gibberish in his eyes. Their comprehension is insufficient to even allow them to read it, much less understand it.”

“So even having the [Lexicon], it’s not a shortcut to heaven by all means. More than a guidepost on where to go and some tips on moving forward. Even if they can understand the contents of it, actually putting it into practice is an even harder thing to do. For it is the same as telling an infant to climb a mountain with just a book. It won’t end well.”

“The [Lexicon] can only allow an individual to become the [Class]. Advancing in that [Class] is an entirely different manner. How they move forward from there is up to them.”

The constant barrage of information was enough to make my head spin, but i focused and tried to understand what she said. So even if I have a [Lexicon], it can only allow me to become that class. Wait, there’s something wrong.

“So what if i just use a [Lexicon] to advance without having a deep understanding of my class?”

“You will explode.”

I see. How simple. Well, I guess I have to study then. Unfortunate.

Ms. tiger was about to continue, when she then looked somewhere else. She looked far off into the distance as if she saw something, I gazed in the same direction she was looking at and yet saw the expansive field of the training ground.

“Class dismissed.”

Without saying anything further, she transformed back into her original form in a ball of fire and disappeared from where she was standing. Dumbfounded, i looked around in the training ground, figuring out what to do, when Mr. Lucius appeared on my shoulder with an interested look.

I was about to ask what happened when he said.

“So, child, do you know how to swim by chance?”
