Hello journal! I am name is Pæral Naitolos. My mama [bought] you and [this] pen using one dallor $! It is really expensive! I am five years old. It is 1880 now. Mama is teaching me how to write. Holding a pen is hard! I love mama! She stays home and teaches me all things[;] she is smart. I want to be as smart as mama. She told me it is her duty to be smart. She told me the women who aided the founding of the country believed in “republican motherhood”. She told me to use this book to write down my life, feelings, my thoughts. She [wants] to stay home and teach me, and my little brother stuff! My little brother is called Hyro like the sound of “hi” from hi with the sound of “lo” from hello. My little brother is annoying annoys me. I cannot sleep when he [cries] all the time because [his bed] is wet and yellow. Mama always makes him not cry. Mama also makes me not cry. Mama good! Dad comes home in [the] evenings. He brings good food. Sometimes I do not understand Papa. He brought me a book called the Holy Bible with many words I do not understand. It is too hard to read. Mama is always happy to see dad bring back the green paper and shiny circle rocks with old man’s faces on them. (I can write long sentences. I am smart!) Shiny circle rocks are cool. Why does mama like green paper? There is no space to write stuff on it. She likes to write stuff. She does it all day. She teaches me how to write when she is not writing. I feel happy today! [I got a] journal! I think writing is fun. Writing is not as fun as drawing. I love drawing about trees, nature, and about God! I memorized the twenty six letters of [the] alphabet and can count to one hundred. Mama is very proud of me! That [is] it! I will write to you when I want to write down my life, my feelings, my thoughts!
