Background

Mr. Naitolos’s journal was recovered inside a vintage bed recently in May 2019. The bed was owned by a middle-class worker called Nick. This journal gives us an insight into the life of a person who lived from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. According to official records, Pæral Naitolos was born on January first, 1875; although we cannot be certain where he was born, some evidence points to him being born in Christ Hospital (Jersey City, New Jersey). He is a blond man with a birth defect in his ears that made them sharp, and he grew out his blond hair to hide his ears. He lived such a long life that we possibly can learn a few health tips from him, even though he does not specifically list his “health tips” in his journal. Pæral lived in New York for most of his life. His family owns a property permanently and passes it on from generation to generation, but this tradition ended in his lifespan. Pæral’s father is Johnathan, a middle-class lawyer. He is on the wealthy end of the middle class as he took bribes from Tammany Hall, shook hands with Boss Tweed, and defended the corrupt practices of Tammany Hall in court. Pæral’s mother, Elly, is the daughter of a wealthy southern household and got married immediately after college. She is a staunch believer in separate spheres and the cult of domesticity. She raised Pæral and Hyro, and a daughter, Elizabeth, while married to Johnathan. Hyro ran away from home when he was young. When Johnathan was found to be abetting in the TeaPot Dome Scandal in 1922, he was acquitted using his shady connections. However, his lawyer career was over. Elly suddenly joined the women’s right movement despite believing in domesticity, and she demanded for the right for women to file a divorce; it was short lived, as later in 1922, Elly took Elizabeth to Britain and was never seen again. It is assumed that she took up another identity, though historians and investigators have yet to find the identity she took up among thousands of WWI refugees. Johnathan, having lost all but Pæral, depended on Pæral for financial support. Despite being in the middle of the prohibition, Jonathan died due to alcohol overdose.

The family life of Pæral influenced his character a lot, and these influences are not well mentioned in his journal. However, the authenticity of the information above can be questioned as they are retrieved from oral and written accounts of Pæral’s associates, his family, and his family’s associates. There are some discrepancies between different accounts, but the information above was confirmed by a few experts, though the exact Southern household where Elly came from is disputed as it is not listed in official records. We would appreciate any historians and experts reading this to help us to figure Pæral’s life out.
