Chapter 5-New Year Census

In Kylia City, Kylia was looking out the shutters of her manor. Many citizens would wrap themselves in blankets, with rags wrapped around their feet, shielding them from the harsh cold snow as they go out on their day.

While many of the new reforms did raise living standards of most people, it's still not enough.

Focusing on national defense, Kylia invested a lot of resources on heavy industry, as to ensure that Kylia would not fall to foreign pressure. However this left little room for investment in the light industry, as most artisans are now busy repairing and constructing infrastructure between the mines and the steelmaking plant.

At least the people now have enough food to eat. Kylia remembers year 0 of her rule, very horrible things happened that year. During the winter, the population, which had grown a lot during the summer months, because of high birth rates, would plummet downwards by the hundreds, before stabilizing when people had enough food to eat.

Suddenly, Roshi walked through the office door with a stack of experimental papers in her hands.

Kylia had been using a lot of parchment lately, as she had to design dozens of drawings for many of the state’s new reforms and technologies.

However, compared to paper, parchment is a lot more expensive and cannot be mass produced, so Kylia decided to assign a couple of artisans to work on making paper with some instructions she gave them.

Later this year Kylia plans to introduce many new products into the economy once the workforce is available.

Roshi sat down in front of Kylia’s desk, using a business-like tone as she began going over state affairs.

“Government officials (Knights) had been going around the capital for days, gathering data needed for the year 1 census.“ Looking down the page, Roshi continued.

"The data from last year’s census is as follows-”

Total Population-9,090 Increase-1%

Industrial Population-182 To Population-2%

Rural Population-8,908 To Population-98%

Kylian Land Area-1,000,000 Km^2

Kylian GDP-1,652,400 Rupees Increase-2%

Kylian Revenue-578,340 Rupees

Total Kylian Debt-1,178,702 Rupees

Kylian Debt to GDP ratio-71%

People in the Armed Forces-50

Percentage of population who are in the Armed Forces-0.5%

Kylian Steel Production-10 tonnes per year Increase-500%

National Strength Index-1.74 Increase-6.43%

“As you requested last year we added Industrial, Rural population tracking, GDP to Ratio, and a new National Strength Index we had calculated with the formula you had suggested.” Roshi yawned.

Roshi further stated, “we also noticed that population had gone up by a percentage point, we never had anything like that happen before in a while.”

“We also made some estimates of these new terms you suggested to the census a year prior.” Roshi added.

“The data is as follows-”

Industrial Population-90 To Population-1%

Rural Population-8,910 To Population-99%

Kylian Debt to GDP ratio-74%

National Strength Index-1.64

“And lastly, we had conducted a rough estimate on the National Strength Index on nations around the world.” Roshi had gone through her papers to get out another list.

“Here are a list of countries National Strength Index, including Kylia, from most powerful to weakest-”

Hyrule-246.24

Coalition of City States-9.36/1.56 x 6 City States

Viskov-6.24

Pavo-6.18

Rosa-5.13

Zeleny-4.10

Sovi-2.02

Kylia-1.74

Zora-0.31

Roshi followed up. “From the list, you may notice that the Coalition is actually more powerful than the most powerful Valor state. However in real life, most Coalition member states compete with each other’s interests and are generally divided, resulting in Valor dominance.”

“If the Coalition really had such strength, they would have swallowed all of the western countries by now.”

“Hyrule’s National Strength is an entire level above all other countries in the world combined because of its sheer population. As of this year, it is estimated that Hyrule has a total population of around 214,979 people.”

“The only reason why Hyrule had not decided to take over the entire continent is because of geography, sheer size, and vast trade the rest of the continent has to offer.”

“By all means the National Strength Index formula is not at all too accurate and can only give us a rough understanding of the real strength for each country as it ignores other factors that may limit or strengthen a country’s National Strength.” Roshi concluded.

How did Roshi find all this important information about all of the different countries in the world? Well all of the countries on this continent have been neighbors for thousands of years.

Hyrule is known to be 10,000+ years old and at its heyday supported a population of 21 million but has been declining in population at a constant rate of about 0.01% every year since the decline of Sheikah Technology after the first Calamity.

After that long of a time you can roughly estimate the population of Hyrule over a period of thousands of years, and will eventually get a very accurate estimate of Hyrule’s population.

Another thing that helps is that there is alot of trade between all of these countries. If Hyrule stopped trading with the Western States, the population would seriously decline as the central government of Hyrule is nowhere near as strong as the Western States and will collapse from corruption.

In a way all the countries on the continent are reliant on each other as they can not break the current trade system.

Hyrule provides the tools, while Western countries do the farming.

With this data Kylia now has a better understanding of what foreign policies to enact in the line of national interests when competing internationally.
