Chapter 9 Who is the Ghost?

Chapter 9 Who is the Ghost?

Reaching the main road, I give one last glance toward the five guys in the alleyway. They are frozen.

“It’s a pity, I still wished to read more books.”

I pointed the Miracle Camera lens to the empty sky and clicked it. This removed the freezing effect on the five guys that are blocking the alleyway.

Seeing the sky reminded me that I hadn’t looked at what the sky in this world looked like during the night.

“Will there be the fabled Stars and Constellations in this foreign world? Or will there be only one lonely Moon?”

I distinctly remember there was moonlight last night.

At the very least, the sun here seems to be a similar Star. Although they might probably be the same sun. The chance of another Star exists is slim.

Yet, I believe Stars exist in my world. I hope there will be Stars in this world, too.

Proof of Existence is easy, but Proof of Absence is impossible. One of my main beliefs after experiencing the world with Irregulars.

“Speaking of world… This world…”

The world of Idam.

It was comprised of two continents and one group of islands. I was in the Kingdom of Heart, and it is an island nation. Sandwiched between the two continents on the north and the south.

On the south was the bigger-sized continent, The Empire of Man, the sole ruling country on that continent. It’s been embroiled in a civil war and a coup de tat for two years.

On the north was the smaller continent. The Forest Conclave and The Holy Kingdom of System are on that continent. It was worth noting that, apparently, the Forest Conclave once had a foothold on the South Continent. Since the continent is farther than the South Continent, the book I read doesn’t tell much in detail.

Beneath these two main landmasses and islands was the Underground Kingdom, a migratory kingdom. It is rumoured they are currently beneath the Kingdom of Heart right now. There isn’t much information regarding this kingdom.

However, there is one more country that literally has no information available in the library, the Magician Council.

“Or maybe I just didn’t have the chance to read it.”

Having had enough of walking aimlessly around, I decided to go to the man selling flowers.

“He should have more information regarding the Wild Boys.”

I didn’t read much of the first book I took. I was more interested in the second book I found in that library. From the second book, I confirmed a couple of things.

There is a System in here. Classes are part of that System. Besides that, there is also Skill and Spell. They intriguingly follow the Law of the World, which is basically a logical effect of a unique law of this world of Idam.

A Mana, is something that exists and is abundant in this world. Within the logical side of Mana, there is System that affects all the intelligent beings here.

That isn’t that shocking enough. What is more shocking is the opposite of the System.

People outside the System, outside the logic, were called the Demon. They don’t follow the Law of the World. They don’t have rules outside of their own, a set of principles that is unique to each Demon.

In other words, they are Irregular.

I should read it again instead of having a brief overview of the content.

To be rudely interrupted by those duo.

In front of me was a somewhat familiar street.

“Why did she want to capture me?”

I pointed my favourite type of weapon to a human flesh hidden by a shirt.

With a whisper, I said

“I want to talk, a private talk. If you don’t know what’s pointing to your heart, It’s an advanced gun from a place you didn’t expect to be here.”

Seeing the dilating eyes of the poor man selling flowers, I just smiled and said, despite his heavy breathing from the panic.

“You think I'm foolish enough not to notice the exact same tattoo on your wrist and the people involved in the library? I didn’t immediately shoot you because you look like hate the Demon too.”

I whispered a much lower voice to his ear.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

“I am planning to raid their base tonight. You know where it is.”

Leaning back, I smiled again.

“For now, store up your flowers first, I am not that cruel to let your business fail from thieves when we talk.”

Indicating my eyes for him to move, the heavy breathing slowly receded and he placed his flower merchandise in the stall cabinet. I could see the tattoo on his wrist.

From the abstract tattoo on the thug’s head in the alleyway when I help Jacob, to the glimpse of the tattoo I accidentally saw on this man’s wrist and more of such tattoo on the people in the library. I suspect they are part of the Wild Boys unique identification.

It’s common for gangs to have distinct tattoos that represent their loyalty and membership to their organization, regardless of whether this is a different world. Although these people have slightly different styles of tattoos on them, they are roughly identical.

Even if this world didn’t have the custom of gang tattoos, the man’s expression in front of me when finding out the book came from the district library was a hatred that came from familiarity.

Seeing him locking up his cabinet, I spoke.

“Are you done? How about we go to your house? So you will be more relaxed there.”

“Uhh…”

“What? You have a family?”

He shakes his head.

“Then let’s go.”

He hesitated a moment and glanced down at my gun, at which point I no longer pointed at him. Now, it’s hidden by my sleeve.

With it, he started to walk.

~~~~~
I haven’t noticed before, but now I can confirm we will roughly go where Jacob lives.
Had she eaten the I-4590-1, the Panacea, I wondered as we arrived in a small-looking house. When I got inside, the first peculiarity was the several bed rolls around the inner room. It’s a two-room house.
“You are sharing the house with people?”
“Were. They all passed away.”
The second peculiarity was the house had a string of old scissors and nails dangling near the front door.
My curiosity got ahead of me.
“What is that string for?”
He looked at me weirdly.
“You never heard of ‘The Ghost of the Heart City’? Ah, right. You aren’t local here.”
Ghost? From what I read, the Kingdom of Heart islands was famous for its unique type of demons. Supernatural beings that rise from the dead. Ghost is one of them.
“What’s so special for this Ghost that it deserved a Title? And the connection with this string?”
Title. Part of the so-called System. The Intelligent being here will receive a Title when a huge mass of Intelligent beings or a being with major significance comes to know an act or particular characteristic of the Intelligent being.
The excerpt I read about the Title sounds like a borderline Irregular thing to me. However, it seems Title has no effect on the receiver.
“The Ghost… Its main target was low-rank nobles or fallen nobles. It also targets common people in power, like the merchants and the Wild Boys execs. Although It rarely kills and more often scares people instead, but when It does, it is brutal.”
“The System Priest didn’t exorcise It after they found out It hunt other Supernatural beings too, specifically Ghosts and the people It kills are all… Demons. It is very efficient, much more efficient, that The System Priests seem to delay the exorcism for years.”
I can’t help to intercept.
“They delayed it?”
That somehow contradicts with the bold statement in the book that System Priest detests Demons so much that it is on par with the extreme faction of the…
“Mmm, The majority of the System Priests in here was part of the moderate instead of fanatical. I think they deemed the Ghost useful and decided to not exorcise it.”
There is a divide in the System church too? But it’s called as moderate and fanatical instead.
“The Priests said having scissors and nails near your door is enough to ward off the Ghost. It won’t be effective if you are dabbling in Demon matter though.”
I wonder if the Ghost was under Irregular type-H or type-M. Probably type-H due to its seeming decision-making of choosing a target? But it doesn’t eliminate the fact it could be working under instinct.
“The people who once encountered It said It has Burnt skin, Red eyes and Black Hair. When you hear a dog howl it’s present, and if the dog whines its near. If the laughter is loud it is far and barely audible laughter means she is onto you. You can smell the stench of death and somehow a Plumeria fragrant around you.”
That’s a lot of characteristic for an Irregular.
Wait.
“Plumeria scent?”
“Yes?”
Maybe my expression was too obvious.
“Did you encounter It?”
My head is aching. She shouldn’t be It. Her body is even in one of the worst condition I ever seen, like a dead body. Dead body...
“Fuck.”
Grasping the rim of my glasses and forehead, I interjected the man from speaking.
“Tell me where the Wild Boys base is. The one with the most Demon in it.”
I don’t want to think about it anymore and need some outlet. Urgently.
I am no longer interested in learning more about the Wild Boys situation, their strengths, and their weaknesses. My impulse tendency is coming out.
“Mr. Librarian, you maybe don’t know, but there was a reason why I left the Wild Boys, and it connected with the Ghos-”
*Click*
I brought out my gun and pointed it straight to his head.
“Where is the base? You know it, right?”
“Please hear me out first, even if I tell you the System church should already be being dispatched to eliminate it soo-”
“I don’t care about your story. One last time, tell me.”
The muzzle of my gun is right on his right eye.
Fortunately, he is smart enough to immediately tell me the base’s location.
~~~~~

A few minutes after the man proclaimed as the Librarian left, when the man selling the flower was sitting near the bed of my past colleague

“They will avenge you guys, I am sure of it. Those Demons are no longer our brothers, and they must never successfully managed to summon that wretched Demon.”

“What if your former brothers had already summoned the Demon?”

Turning around, a floating beautiful woman is leisurely eating several chicken skewers. Around her are hundreds of skewers levitating. Most of them are empty.

“Yesterday, I would like to spare you despite you being a traitor. That’s when I thought you had met the Ghost from the faint scent. Apparently, you only meet the person who encounters the Ghost.”

Her enchanting yellow eyes darkened. Her previously white dress is like dipped in a black ink barrel, now pitch black. The fair skin squirmed, and pus and gashes started to appear all around on her skin.

“I don’t like being lied to.”

The man raised scissor and nail toward the Demon.

“Bygone Demon!”

Despite her horrifying outer appearance, the Ghost in the black dress was visibly amused.

“You thought I am the same level as her? Funny.”

The skewers around her are launched toward the man. There is no sound for the next few seconds.

“A pity I can’t eat you, I had to chase someone.”

The woman’s entire appearance returned back to normal, and her skewers entered the gap between her white dress. Some of it comes to her hand, the ones that have chicken skewers.

She left behind the dying man inside the house.

~~~~~
A priest is staring outside the window inside a supposedly empty house. The person being stared at was slowly moving away, now hidden by the building.
“It’s really you.”
Her voice is soft.
