“Me? Of course.”
I said to the pinkish-red haired girl in front of me. She looks about nineteen or twenty years old. Despite her elegant attire, it couldn’t hide the tomboyish side of her.
Who is she? She couldn’t be from the Church. One of the books I read tells me the church personnel wear a light blue uniform during work and are forbidden to wear earrings at any time.
She wears a ruby earring on her left ear.
“You look hating them so much.”
“Yes. Although I am just an ordinary librarian, it’s irritating to see people swaggering and acting as if they are real librarians. Not to mention how they replace the books to deceive the people.”
Looking around the library, I noticed the fake librarian started being wary of us.
These two are too conspicuous, primarily the guy on her back. His Zweihander-like sword basically tells people you are combatant and mean business.
“Please don’t be reckless in cleaning them. You would dirty the books if you did that.”
If the library is dirty, at least don’t pollute the books sanctity further.
Surprisingly, she easily agreed without question by nodding her head. Her ponytail bobbed up and down.
“It is indeed a problem if they are dirty. She even hates it when a book gets slightly burned, not to mention when it is coated in blood. Even if these books aren’t hers.”
She has an enlightened expression on her face.
“She?”
“Someone I know, so what is the plan? What help can you do?”
“That depends on how skilful both of you are.”
I point at the guy.
“Him? Daniel can cut this entire building in half.”
It must be a Skill. This is a term I learned from reading one of the books here.
“How is your finesse of control?”
His swing could result in blood splattered all over a bookshelf if careless.
“Good enough.”
Seeing his confidence, I point to the girl.
“What about you?”
I feel her Class is connected with the Magic of this world.
“I can’t use my main power here without damaging the books, so I can only use a couple throwing knives.”
“Hmm… then here is the plan.”
~~~~~
I watch as Daniel walks to the center of the library, going to his position.
Playing with small knives in my hand, I glanced at the five people on the counter. It’s a pity I can’t cast a spell here. That group is a perfect target to throw a firebomb.
Damn books.
I flinched a little, remembering how angry she was when I accidentally burned one of her book collections. I still can’t believe there would be a day when her composed face would crack.
Taking out candy from my pocket, I ate it as the outer layer melted inside my mouth. My nerves calmed down with it. Just in time, I saw the guy arrive on the second floor. Daniel could see it too, as he unsheathed his Zweihander.
The Demons in this library also unsheath their hidden weapon. Eight people around me, fifteen around Daniel, and five at the very least on the second floor.
Now… The sign to start should be…
*BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG*
A five-consecutive shot rang out. The five people in front of me trembled from the unexpected loud sound. Distracted from the incoming knives from me.
The first wave of three knives stabbed their eyes. Three out of eight are cleaned. I wasn’t confident in my second throw, so I aimed at their chest.
Two knives managed to hit their heart and stomach, while the last one was blocked successfully. The last person handled it with her hand, somehow able to withstand a knife throw.
Is it the Mutant race or the Gargoyle race Demon?
Four finished. Three seconds at most have passed.
Two people jumped closer behind my back, and on my left, a person started murmuring gibberish.
A Cultist Class, and Two Melee Class Demons?
I wanted to turn around and deal with the immediate danger despite the more dangerous Cultist, but another five-banging sound reverberated.
*BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG*
Two sounds of pierced flesh come from behind me. My half-turned body could see the two melee Demons hit in their heart.
Six out of combat. Five seconds should have passed.
Roughly knowing how much time passed, I went to the Cultist. On my right, the remaining one out of five people come to stop me. I ignored her.
“[Flaming Hand]”
My hand heated up. Halfway, a surging of heavy wind passed, it barely missed me. A huge sword immediately sundered the person who almost reached me.
This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Her body cracked into multiple stones. So, she is a Gargoyle.
The Cultist in front of me was panicking. He hadn’t finished his ritual to the Evil God, and his last ally was obliterated right in front of him.
The light in his eyes vanished as my burning hand pounced through his chest.
Watching him trying to speak but can’t produce a sound due to his burnt lungs, the candy in my mouth tastes sweeter.
Retracting my hand, I look around me. The people around me had already died. As for around Daniel…
Most of them have slash wounds. It’s a clean cut as the blood is contained so as not to dirty the book around them.
Daniel knocked the last two unconscious with his bare hand. Two more Demons to interrogate, Danny won’t like it.
Dragging a heavy big sword to Daniel, I returned his sword.
“Lady, that’s reckless.”
Daniel rebuked me for exposing myself to the Gargoyle unnecessarily.
“I know you can protect me.”
Forgotten to ask this morning, so I asked him now.
“Why are you using Danny’s sword anyway?”
It’s unusual for Danny and Daniel to exchange their speciality weapons.
“I lost a bet.”
“Both of you did a bet behind my back? What is it?”
It’s a pity; I can’t hear the answer right now. The man we are working with comes down from the second floor.
I am not as curious as the bet between Daniel and Danny, but I had to ask.
“I don’t remember. The king of Steel in the Empire of Man developed five consecutive gun shots weapon. What is that?”
Although, I have a feeling he won’t tell me much.
~~~~~
The king of Steel, a vassal of the Empire of Man, recently staged a coup against the Empire. He brings forth a new type of weapon into this world.
Apparently, it’s a new weapon developed by his son-in-law.
It’s a short excerpt from a new book published two months ago. It’s quite interesting to see gun technology in this world. Additionally, with the existence of guns already prevailing in other countries, I benefited from them.
An excuse to use my Glock.
I don’t need to say too much about what weapon I use.
“It’s a newly developed pistol for a special mission.”
I didn’t say I was a king of Steel subordinate, but they should have misunderstood me as one.
It’s fortunate that the Kingdom of Heart has an extremely hostile relationship with the Empire and Indifference toward the king of Steel.
“Can I ask something? Are you the one who attacked the Wild Boys gang in here? It seems these Demons are part of them.”
Jacob said the gang was in a secret war against an unknown faction. I saw a similar tattoo on three out of eleven people on the second floor. Similar to the one I interrogated in that alleyway.
The pink haired girl raised her hand, indicating to wait. She spoke to the man who easily took care of tens of people with his sword.
“Daniel, tell the others to come inside and bring these two outside to Danny.”
She turns to me
“How many people are on the second floor? Are there any alive?”
“Eleven people. No one is alive.”
She raised her eyebrows at the higher than expected amount of people and said
“You are quite skilled. Are you really just a Librarian? Daniel, go.”
The man called Daniel left with two people in his hand. Facing the girl, she suddenly did an elegant bow, introducing herself.
“It’s a late introduction. My name is Anna Margaret de Valoy, and I am the new Duchess of Valoy. Thank you for helping us in eliminating the Demons in this library.”
Eh?
I don’t like this.
Was some unknown Irregular in the rank of Twenty influencing me right now? How else did I meet the Duchess that Jacob talked about yesterday?
“Was it that shocking?”
Resisting the urge to check my Watch, I smiled politely and answered.
“If I am to be honest, yes. Meeting the Courage of The Kingdom in the flesh is an honour. I can’t tell you my identity, but please call me Vaan.”
I give her my usual fake name, which I repeatedly use for distant acquittance. Telling her I can’t divulge more of my identity should reinforce the implication that I am working for the king of Steel and am currently on a secret mission.
“Lady Anna, I assure you I won’t bring harm to the Kingdom of Heart’s innocent populace and its interest.”
It’s a pity I don’t know more about the customs of that king. I can’t give her a more explicit hint.
The Duchy of Valoy, the one in charge usually being called Courage of the Kingdom. Famous for their order of knights and virtuous action. They care more about the citizens than the Kingdom itself.
My promise to not hurt the citizens should be enough for them.
“Mr. Vaan… Do you perhaps know… No nevermind. For your question, yes, we are indeed the one attacking the stupid name gang, and yes, they are involved with Demons.”
She seemed to want to ask me something and decided it was a mistake.
The Duchy must be directly interfered with because the Demons are dangerous to the citizens. The Wild Boys being involved with Demons… That’s a bad sign, especially for Jacob and… Kunti.
“As you can see, Me and my forces are currently eradicating the Demons forces in the Heart City. I was wondering whether you might want to help us. Demon is, after all, our common enemy.”
I would like to join.
“I am sorry, Lady Anna. I have a mission I must finish before then.”
Unfortunately, my tools are mostly Irregulars. Irregular in my world is th-
Anna’s next question stumped me and it interrupted my thoughts.
“Do you need my help for your mission?”
Why is she asking that?
“No need.”
I spotted her red iris glinted.
“Are you sure?”
That’s when the gear on my head starts to furiously turn.
I need to leave.
It’s bad if I stay here any longer.
“Lady Anna, I have to go now. See you next time.”
Walking to the front door, I stopped and looked back at the lack of response.
She is staring at me with a slight smile.
“Mr Vaan, the Librarian, can I ask you a favour to stay here?”
It’s a terrible idea to go from the front door.
I took out a particular item from my bag.
“Lady Anna, can I ask you one last question.”
“One last question? We will have so much time on our hands, so it won’t be the last, but go on. I also have a question for you.”
“Why are you doing this?”
Directed the item in my hand toward Anna.
“I am curious about your identity, and I wanted you to meet someone. My question is simple, where did you get those glasses of yours?”
I see. Hearing her answer, I clicked on the Camera.
~~~~~
Waiting in front of the door, I asked my deputy to make sure again.
“Five people are watching the back door?”
“Yes, captain.”
The front door suddenly opened. It’s Anna. She looks angry.
“Did he pass by here?”
Seeing our lack of action, she answered herself.
“So he must have escaped via the backdoor. Daniel, let’s go.”
Just when I wanted to go, a familiar voice spoke.
“Anna, didn’t I tell you to help him? Why are you chasing him now?”
A woman hidden by a white cloak walks to us. Anna and I shook a little since we could see the blaze in the woman’s golden eyes.
“Lady Theresa… uhh, Big Sis Theresa, I just wanted to let you meet him. Isn’t that what you want?”
Glancing at how cute Anna is being flustered to the point of reverting her form of addressing, it’s a relieving sight.
She is too uptight to the point of changing her outward personality these days. Her father’s death did a number to Anna. That damn Bastard.
Theresa’s expression visibly softens, seeing the nervous Anna.
“I would probably meet him if you did nothing. Regardless, it would end up with him escaping for a different reason.”
Theresa smiled and held Anna’s hand to soothe her nervousness.
“Thank you for your attempt. Come on, we should prepare for our evening and night operations. You can tell me what happened on the way.”
Are we going to leave just like that?
“I am sorry, Lady Theresa. Are we not going to check whether he might get caught in the backdoor?”
I ask Theresa, just in case, in which she just shakes her head.
“If he made up his mind, nobody can catch him. No matter how disadvantageous it is for him. It’s better if we naturally meet.”
~~~~~
Currently, I once again close where I teleported here. I could see the person selling flowers still in his shop stall. I went closer to him, past a woman who just ordered two hundred chicken skewers.
I started to wonder what had just happened after I had escaped by freezing Anna and five people at the backdoor with the Irregular I-233, the Miracle Camera.
Why the hell did she want to capture me?
There is no malicious intent, so it shouldn’t be because of the Irregular items on my hand. She shouldn’t even know they are Irregular items?
Then why? And why is she asking about my glasses?
If she knows the glasses is an Irregular item, then it’s a problem.
“Who would have thought Irregular would be called a Demon in this world.”
I muttered silently.
