Chapter 7 It's about the Principle

Chapter 7 It's about the Principle

I should have asked where the nearest library from Kunti.

Standing on a crowded road, I look around for a street shop that might know where it’s located.

That’s when I realized while walking that I was going closer to where I was teleported here in the first place. By going left, I could see the abandoned house.

“Uncle Florist, your flowers are so effective! Only one night, my ex must go to a clinic!”

“Did you really just Hex’d your ex with my flower…? Beautiful sister, you just committed a crime by having a deal with a Demon! Please don’t involve my shop with your antic!”

A recognizable sound can be heard beside me. It’s two people who seem bargaining about flowers yesterday. The Uncle and the Lady.

“Hush! It’s not a Demon! According to this book I found in the city library, the being I prayed upon is one of the System God angel. She is an old angel that fell while battling traitorous scum and Evil God minion!”

City Library? What a lucky coincidence.

Hm?

The man seems familiar with the book in the lady’s hand? What a peculiar expression, disappointment and hatred swirling on his face.

“If the angel has fallen, how did She respond to your prayer? And since when did System Angels deal with a couple scuffle to the point of cursing them ill?”

“That’s… you are right…”

“Lady, please leave. I recommend you to immediately go to the church right now.”

“I… The church won’t crucify me right?”

“The priest won’t do that if you answer honestly and repent, but you would probably be imprisoned for safety. Now go!”

“Alright…”

Just when the lady turned around, she saw a man draped in a red cloak. Looking at the lady’s pale face, she seems distressed about her situation.

“Hello, I just overheard your conversation. I am a librarian from another city. Can I know where the library you found the book?”

“Ah, It’s because I wanted to help. Please just point the way and go on to the nearest church.”

I added some explanation so they won’t misunderstand my intention. The uncle behind the lady instead said something unrelated.

“Aren’t you a Gravekeeper? I remember you have been dressed as such since yesterday, and I can feel the aura of death around you.”

Oh, he recognized me, too. There is an aura of death around me? Is it metaphor or literal? I did kill six people yesterday… How did he know?

I think for a few seconds before taking out the Grimoire from my bag.

“I was borrowing my friend’s clothes since mine is dirty, see this? It’s a precious book I must deliver to someone. I had met bandit attack on the way here and… took care of them.”

Spouting some nonsense it was more than enough to convince the uncle.

I was told where the library was, and the lady asked why I didn’t just follow her to the church. She seems afraid and needs company. Unfortunately, I had to decline it, citing that I should have checked the library immediately.

Of course, it’s not the main reason. Being involved in an incident in this world might be a bad idea.

I don’t even know much of the common sense around here yet.

The main reason was and always will be, because it’s a library.

It’s about the principle.

As a Librarian, how could I not involve myself in the matter of a library?

A place of learning and reflection. Where people can find themselves immersed in the calm atmosphere.

Walking to the library, I glanced at the Grimoire in my hand. My gut is telling me a new page is opened.

I took a quick look.

The ritual content of the fourth page was something I kind of expected.

[The Aseptic

Plagues have been the nemesis of mankind long before most Desire were created. Albeit weakened, the Desire to not suffer through plagues is fixed and deeply rooted in humanity.

….

]

The price is relatively cheap, half the amount of human blood. It doesn’t specify it either. Basically, I could just drain a group of people’s blood in a period of eight weeks. A human has about five liters of blood. 550 cc for every person in eight weeks. So it only needs five people.

Or I could just go the easy way.

The effect is neat, Immunity against plagues for 2004 days. What a random amount, but specific days.

Compared to the service offered by the Hospital, it is cheap. However, Hospital also provide all kinds of health services.

I fixed the glasses angle a bit and noticed the fifth page opened.

Just a casual glance alone was enough to send a shock to my body. Clenching my hand, I tried hard to not be too excited.

I was, after all, just arrived at the Library.

“Sial, what happened? Why are you scared?”

I saw Father Rizky praying on the chair inside the church. The symbolism of ‘I’ was everywhere. The System blessed this entire building.

Usually, feeling tranquil, but the current circumstance created a sense of dread instead.

The Church is tolerant of all things except for Demon.

Accidentally making a deal with Demon power should be enough a heinous crime for them.

“I… have a confession and want to repent, Father Rizky. Can we go to the confession room?”

Glancing around the hall, I spotted a few things.

It was odd. Father Rizky was the only priest stationed in this neighborhood. Yet, an unknown priest is praying next to where Father Rizky sits before. A lady in a white cloak and blue priest uniform.

Besides that, several fierce-looking men are sitting around the back. Clearly, they are here not to pray because some of them outright sleep while sitting. Among them, in the middle, another lady sits.

The lady in the back is a noble, evident from the elegant, luxurious attire and atmosphere. She is praying. It seems the people around her are her bodyguards.

Why are there people here? It’s usually empty except for Father Rizky.

“A confession so suddenly?”

“Yes, it is about my ex and this book.”

I presented him with the book I borrowed from the city library. I can’t believe I found such a cursed book while browsing through the bookshelves where self-help books should have been.

That’s when the unknown priest suddenly spoke.

“Young lady, what’s your name?”

A soft voice. It is so soft that people might mistake it as the sound of wind.

“My name is Sial, Sister.”

It’s fortunate that the church is quiet and not affected by the bustling world outside. I could hear her quite clearly.

“Nice to meet you Sial. My name is Theresa. ”

She introduced herself. Then continued it with a request.

“For the next few minutes, please don’t ask questions. May I see the book in your hand?”

No questions? The cursed book? Should I give it to her?

I was intending to just talk with Father Rizky… It should be okay since they are both priests? Peeking at Father Rizky, he just nodded to follow through with the request.

Giving the book to Theresa the priest, she abruptly said

“Did you curse your ex with this book? Or is it another person?”

How did she know? I haven’t told them much.

“I cursed my ex… His name is An. Sister Theresa, can he be cured? I… Please punish me, Sister Theresa, as long as my An is healthy again. I will accept any price and punishment. I want to repent.”

I knelt on my knees toward Theresa.

My hope wasn’t crushed.

“Mr. Rizky, do you know where An, this poor lady ex home?”

“Yes.”

“Then please take care of An for me. Go quickly before it’s too late.””

“Yes.”

Father Rizky strangely seemed to revere and respect Theresa.

“Thank you. Thank you.”’

I honestly thought both me and An would be executed due to being involved with Demon matter. Uncle Florist is right. The Church wasn’t that unreasonable.

“No need to thank me, thank the System. Sial, where do you get this book?”

“I get it in the City Library of the West District. It was in the Psychology section.”

The beautiful black-haired lady in front of me called a familiar name. A recently famous person.

“Anna Margaret, do you hear it?”

“Yes.”

The lady in the back replied. Her bodyguards are all woken up.

“Go.”

“Yes, Lady Theresa.”

Anna Margaret. It’s the name of the new Duchess of Valoy. The old Duke had been murdered by the Demons, and the oldest daughter took up his title, beating the second heir in the succession, an illegitimate son. The funeral takes places…

Wait.

“Sister Theresa, a man in black clothes inquired about the book too. He claimed to be a librarian but looked like a Gravekeeper and had a stench of death… According to an acquaintance of mine.”

Uncle, sorry, I told them your part. I won’t tell them your name though.

Just then, I noticed Theresa’s glasses glinted under a light. Her glasses…

“His glasses are the exact same as Sister Theresa!”

Theresa was silent for a while. Fixing her glasses position, she asked.

“Black hair and eyes?”

Theresa knew him? But his eyes are grey.

“Yes, but the eyes are not black. They’re grey.”

She looked toward the back, where the Duchess Anna was standing on the church door.

“Work together with him. Be discreet and secretive about it.”

“Yes.”

With the last group of people leaving the church. There is only Theresa and me inside.

I was curious about who Theresa was so she could order the new Duchess. Several candidates pass on my head until one person fits the description.

Golden eyes and Black hair.

“Sial. Can you tell me what happened in detail? Please relax and think of this as a confession.”

If she is the person I think of, something big is brewing in this district.

“Yes Sister Theresa. I wanted to repent.”

I don’t understand what had gotten in me.

It was a usual fight between me and An. He disappeared for months without any news. When he came back, he acted normal and brushed my anxiety so carelessly. In a fit of rage, one of us decided to end the relationship that started between our parents.

It’s not the first time we ‘ended’ the relationship. We would go back together in just a few days. My friends always make fun of us due to our stupid scuffles every time it happens.

Yet, this time is different. Something possessed me yesterday. The rationality of caution is gone and replaced with deep hatred. I didn’t notice something was wrong with the ‘angel’ proclaimed by the book, instead, I went on to gather the ingredients.

To curse my own beloved.

I tell Theresa everything, until the point where I completed the cursing of leaving the Hex Doll and flowers in front of his house.

Was it due to the fact the person in front of me was Theresa, or was it due to my guilt? I tell her everything.

“It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have been childish…”

“Yes, it’s your fault.”

Theresa said, shocking me.

“When this is over, ask for forgiveness from your boyfriend, An. I have a feeling he had done a great deed for you.”

One of her hands holds the symbol of I, the System. While the other raised to my face. I closed my eyes, repenting.

“Let me pray for you. May your action be forgiven by the System God. May your An be impartially judged by the System.”

Due to my unstable emotions, I didn’t notice Theresa saying the last sentence in a deep, cold tone. Reverberating in the entire hall.

~~~~~
Arrived in the library vicinity, I ordered all but one of my subordinates to scatter and wait for further instructions.
My personal guard, Daniel, asked.
“My Lady, are we really going to enter with just the two of us? Why not wait Danny, for more reinforcement?”
“Our reinforcement is for our evening and night operation. Daniel, stop being so humble as if you can’t protect me from anything here. Oh, and wipe your drool away.”
“Lady, did you not tell me about this because it’s my punishment for sleeping? This is a public execution!”
“That’s good to know your mistake. Why are you even sleeping in the church? Don’t do that again next time.”
“I prefer physical punishment over this… The church is such a serene place that I feel sleepy.”
It’s precisely why I think publicly shaming you a little is more effective than physically punishing you.
Daniel and Danny, the sixth-tier Twin Knights Class. Those noisy people would say it’s a waste to not place them in the front line, but so what? They are my people.
Their lives are my life.
“Let’s go.”
Popping up a candy to my mouth, we entered the library. It’s a small library by my standards. About a dozen or so people are mingling around inside.
“Look over there, my Lady.”
Seeing where Daniel pointing at, I spotted the person Lady Theresa had asked to help.
“Who is he? Have you ever seen him?”
“I don’t.”
Neither a noble nor a high-tier Class in the Kingdom of Heart. Was he from the Empire? Or the Council?
Using my Class spell, it told me he had just done six murders last night. Who did he kill?
We were intentionally conspicuous in our scrutiny, so he immediately noticed us.
Savouring the sweet in my mouth, we come closer to the man.
With our quiet voice, I asked.
“We just received the report. It seems you aren’t one of them?”
A disdainful face was the response. He look like hated it to be lumped with these Demons.
“I am not with these fake librarians. Are you from the Church?”
“You could say that. Do you know which ones are Demons?”
We aren’t church members, but we work under Lady Theresa for now.
“All of them, there are only two of you? Do you need help?”
“Two of us is enough. More are outside to prevent them from escaping. The question is, do you want to help?”
Why is Lady Theresa asked us to help him? And being secretive about it.
“Me? Of course.”
