Chapter 6 The Bandaged Lady

Chapter 6 The Bandaged Lady

I can feel the sickness inside of me quickly recede. Confirming the Panacea done with its job, I stared at the person in front of me.

A lady covered with a bandage all over her skin stared back at me. It’s hard to discern whether It’s a lady or not with how much she is covered in bandage. There isn’t even a single strand of hair on her head.

The lady in front of me should be Jacob’s sister. Now I know why Jacob bought so many bandage cloth from the old Yarn shop. It’s kind of concerning what kind of wounds were hidden beneath those.

Her visible dark red eyes of hers seem to notice something. The cautious and bewildered eyes fruited into a question.

“How did you heal so fast? What is that pill?”

She is asking about what just happened. Should I lie?

The Panacea pill is one of the trump cards in my arsenal of tools. I-type Irregular that I and my team trying so hard to retrieve from the Hospital.

Its effects and easy to acquire ingredients were coveted by many, some even disregarded the implication of acquiring those ingredients. I had made some mistakes by revealing them to others, and they unhesitatingly backstabbed me.

So. Should I lie? Or tell her the truth?

We stare into each other as if peering into something hidden by our flesh. Somehow, the deep red eyes reminded me of someone. There is no similarity between them, yet, as they said.

The eyes are the window to the Soul.

Maybe that’s why, despite no benefit or reason for revealing it, I did tell her.

“It is a drug that will restore all of your physical illnesses and wounds. It will work as long as you have a sliver of life in your body.”

My sentence breaks our staring contest. Closing my eyes, I can predict the eyes of the lady would change into hope for her future.

After all, the Panacea can restore whatever she is suffering right now. Its instantenous too. She also should have seen there was another pill on the bottle when I was hurriedly taking one.

It’s not like I can’t give her the Panacea. There is no problem in giving away my last get out of jailcard for her. The problem was the ingredients, human essences…

Sigh.

“Restore all illnesses and wounds? A sliver of life? Oh. Then keep it. Looking at Mr. Librarian’s body, there is a chance another disease would intrude on your body again. Make sure to eat it before you go unconscious next time.”

Opening my eyes, The Lady looks no longer interested. In fact, there is a small contempt for how she speaks, not toward me, but purely on the Panacea.

Why?

I can’t just ask why, so I contemplate for a moment before saying.

“I am sorry, but are you Jacob’s sister? My name is Rivan, and please call me so. May I know the Lady’s name?”

I unintentionally raised my right hand for a handshake but then remembered I was in another world. The custom of introducing themselves should be quite different. When I was lowering my right hand, I glanced at the lady’s right arm.

It was missing.

I didn’t notice it because of the long sleeves she was wearing. My brief antic was seen by the lady. I can tell her mouth is forming a smile underneath the bandages on her face.

“Nice to meet you. Since I can’t call you by your class, then please also call me by my name too.”

She raised her left hand, offering a handshake.

“I am Kunti. Sorry for using my left hand.”

I grasped her hand. Due to my experience, I noticed her skin and flesh is mishapen on her left hand. Possibility more beneath those stiff bandages.

While holding her hand, I also noticed the smell of a flower. Was it the Plumeria flower?

Covered in bandages and has no right arms. The skin and flesh are broken. There are many differences between them, like the scents and eye colours but

“Your stomach must be empty since you woke up pretty later than I expected. The soup I cooked this morning is now cold, so wait here. I will reheat it first.”

Why does Kunti remind me of her?

~~~~~
My mind was in a wreck.
Kunti placed two bowls of soup and two bowls of rice. The way she handled the tray one-handed with ease proved she didn’t help.
Yes, she refused me to help her. Due to certain matters, I am feeling compelled to follow her wish. That matter was the familiarity I felt from her.
If my moral mind was broken by that, my logical side would like slammed by a train fact.
There is already a clue of it. Yet, it is still shocking.
There is magic.
“It’s a modest food since it is all we have. Forgive me for giving you such food.”
She must have been worried since I was staring at the heated soup for too long. The soup only has some chicken meat and carrots. It should be chicken.
“No, I am just wondering about the soup temperature.”
“Was it too hot? Or too cold? Should I cast another spell to perfect the temperature to your liking?”
“That’s not it… anyways, It’s already perfect for me.”
It’s not the same magic as those clowns. It’s smaller and I can feel there is order to it. A magic with some rules applied.
As we both ate the food in silence. I glanced at Kunti, there is a god in here too, yet she didn’t pray before eating. Was it not a custom? Or was she didn’t believe in it?
That’s when her mouth speaks.
“As expected of a class about knowledge. I know you are worried about my Black Flame spell. One of my classes is Black Magician. Do not worry. It’s not the result of a Demon class.”
She seems to have misunderstood my previous inquiries.
Black Magician and Demon class. That’s what Jacob once called me.
“I don’t care about people Class, I was wondering about something else. So that’s where Jacob heard of them… It’s because he knows you-”
“Jacob doesn’t know. He thought it was just a normal Magician spell. Rivan, can you keep it a secret from him?”
“I can do that. Why hide it though?”
From the look of Jacob’s view, Black Magician doesn’t seem to be frowned upon. Is it wrong?
“Black Magician doesn’t count as Demon Classes was because they barely slipped down more to it. It’s already a criminal kind of class.”
“As you know, Jacob is already a thief. If he knew his sister is a Black Magician, it would be harder to convince him to stop being a thief completely.”
So Demon classes are something of the worst classes in this world?
Her frank confession regarding her own class seems to open up something.
“Where is Jacob?”
“He is working as a clerk in the Guild. He should be back later before sunset.”
“He didn’t work as a thief?”
“He did when our finance was in a pinch. When its not, he would work as a clerk. Rivan, How is the pay for being a librarian?”
Kunti is curious about librarian, or is she curious whether I am truly a librarian? No, maybe she wants to get a recommendation for Jacob?
“It’s quite good from where I come. I don’t know much if its in here. Honestly, I am foreign to this world.”
“Really? What a pity.”
~~~~~

It’s strangely peaceful. We don’t know each other that much, yet somehow, we are able to talk about various topics.

“What do you think?”

“I think you have done something commendable. Bringing your friend back from a certain death is not something to be scoffed at.”

“No, not about that. What I meant was how I did it. The method I use was actually something he extremely despised.”

We had finished our lunch.

“Personally, the Why you did it is good. For How you did it is not, at least if seen from his perspective. How did you do it anyway? For it resulting him resenting you so much.”

I bring out the Panacea.

“By this.”

The reason I brought up this particular topic was to try giving her the Panacea. Besides that, I will also tell her the implications of it.

Whether she eats it or not, it is up to her.

Observing Kunti, her face transformed into a frown.

“He didn’t like it when finding out he was alive due to this.”

Didn’t like was an understatement.

“Your friend hates the System church medicine?”

System medicine?

I see, so Kunti seems misunderstand the pill in my hand as a medicine from this System church medicine. She also dislike the church?

“I feel like you misunderstood something Kunti. This pill is not what you thought of.”

“What is it then?”

“I assure you, this pill which name is Panacea is not made by them. The effect is also different. They definitely will restore your physical body.”

The frown on her face disappears, but I can’t discern what her current expression is. Her left hand stretched out.

“May I inspect Panacea a bit?”

“Sure.”

She took the Panacea with her left hand. The smell of Pulmeria is coming back to my hand.

“Panacea, why the name?”

“In ancient times, Panacea was the name of a Goddess. It’s rumoured that her potion can cure all human maladies. Now, it’s unknown where the real potion is located or if it is even real, but several imitations and replicas come out. That pill is one of them.”

Why am I giving a hint that I am not from here? No matter. She won’t believe it anyway.

“It’s unusual to hear a lore about the old Gods. Their name was even already erased from the Myth. Then again, you are a librarian. You know more than I do.”

“This Panacea, it should be expensive then? Why are you suggesting that I take it?”

I didn’t say anything but stared at her in the eyes.

“I admit, it is different from the System church medicine. Nevertheless, it is useless.”

She tried to give back the Panacea. Of course, I don’t receive it.

“Why is it useless?”

Kunti sighed before saying.

“Doctor. That’s my main class. I know my body best, despite seeing how Panacea heal your body from deadly diseases. It won’t work on healing my body. You shouldn’t spend such precious medicine on something useless.”

My choice of telling the truth was correct. It would be bad if I lied about my condition back then.

“It will work. Because it is made from the human essence. That’s also why my friend despises it so much.”

I take the chance to tell her the implications. Her expression changed visibly into confusion, and she began inspecting Panacea.

“I don’t see any trace of what you call human essences. Either way, I don’t care what it’s made of. It won’t work.”

“Whether you believe it will work or not, at least please take it.”

“What’s the price?”

“What?”

“What is the price for me taking this?”

I don’t need one. But if giving a price on it means she would take it. From the look of it, she seems to have decided to accept it to stop me from doing things like leaving the Panacea behind when I left.

“How about not showing how you look like to me after you are healed. Please don’t ask why.”

“That’s… a bizarre request. I won’t ask why, but are you sure? I am quite a beauty before this.”

“Yes.”

“Alright. I won’t show you my face if I decided to eat Panacea, and if it actually healed me.”

~~~~~
“You sure leaving right now? Why not wait for Jacob to come back?”
“I have a business I need to attend. Both this afternoon and later in the evening.”
“So you will come back tomorrow?”
“Maybe not.”
Rivan shakes his head. Seeing that, I can’t help to ask.
“Then whats the point of asking to not show you my face when taking this if you aren’t going back?”
I show him the so-called Panacea on my left hand.
“I will return in a few days, a few weeks at most.”
Is he going home? He said he was not from this world. Was it metaphorical or literal?
“Okay, make sure to take care of your health. Although there doesn’t seem to be any diseases on your body, it doesn’t mean there won’t be any later on.”
“I will. I am going now.”
Before he leaves, I call him out and bring out the red cloak on the chair beside me.
“Wait, take this. Consider it as a gift for helping my brother. I would give you more, but it’s all I have that should be useful for you.”
“A red cloak?”
“Yes, wearing all black is considered ominous here.”
In fact, it’s considered ominous everywhere.
You are really weird for wearing such clothes.
He immediately wears the cloak. It quite look good on him.
“Thank you. See you later.”
“See you later.”
Watching Rivan leave, I can’t believe I just witnessed such careless… Demon.
Wearing all black, Demonic book, lost knowledge of an Old God, and a medicine that is supposedly more effective than the best medicine in the world.
This is why I am suspicious when he told me about not being from this world. Is it the truth?
And did he know? No, he would have mentioned it if he knew about my state.
There is actually really another Demon that didn’t direct their evil to another. One that even helped a thief and gave precious medicine so easily.
Observing the Panacea on my hand, I wonder what he meant by human essence since I am pretty sure it is not made of humans at all. Was it made with the help of a Demon item? Then it makes sense.
I am also curious.
“System.”
Can this Panacea heal my long dead body?
