The Grimoire of Desire
Chapter 5 Unconscious

Chapter 5 Unconscious

Wearing my glasses again, I make sure a small piece of plastic is stuck on the right edge of the glass.

“I am just a Librarian. Not some secret lover of the Duchess.”

We are currently outside the shop after successfully selling the perfume.

“It’s a perfume for female.”

I know right? Why give me a perfume for female?

“Who said men can’t use rose-scented perfume?”

I never use perfume by myself, though.

“So it’s rose? I don’t know much about roses, but according to Old Yarn isn’t such perfume a bit too high quality for a Librarian?”

What should I say here? I am from a distant place where such perfume is affordable for a librarian?

There is a rose flower here? Is the Flora also similar?

“I got it cheap because the original owner didn’t like it.”

“…”

“That doesn’t explain the love shaped and your name engraved on it.”

“Love doesn’t have to be an affection between lover and the engraving is- wait. You can read the word?”

“Yes?”

How?

How did he read the word in the perfume bottle? It’s not this world’s language!

“Can you understand my word right now?”

“What?”

I tried to speak in my original language.

He doesn’t understand it. Yet. He can read the word.

This is wrong. It’s illogical.

How in the wor-

“Cough Cough.”

Suddenly coughing, only now did I notice my body was hot and feverish. Flipping my hand, I look at my watch.

Fortunately, it doesn’t say extremely infected with virus, only moderate. Unfortunately, one of the new virus effects is a reduction in the mind’s capability.

It said imminent unconsciousness. But no life danger. I would probably wake up extremely infected with the virus though.

“Jaco- Cough, I am sorry for troubling you.”

I fell as my vision went darker.

~~~~~
“Ivan! Ivan!”
Please let me sleep.
“Ivan!”
A soft hand was gripping my head roughly.
I forced myself to wake up.
It was the familiar high school library. A place I work at between school breaks because the librarian here is too irresponsible.
Rubbing my eyes, a girl’s voice called me again.
“Sleeping during work again? Ivan, I told you to not stay up late.”
As my eyes cleared, I saw a beautiful girl in a school uniform standing on the other side of the counter. Her silky silver hair reaches into her waist. Carrying a couple of books, she fixed her glasses.
“Class will start soon, let’s go.”
I couldn’t discern her face in detail. Despite that, She is still beautiful in my heart.
I know where I am, but to check it again, I recollected my memories whether they were intact or not.
It’s not.
Seeing the girl wanting to leave, I grabbed her hand over the counter.
“Ivan? What is it?”
I am in a dream. Again.
Under the surprised eyes of the girl, I jumped over the librarian’s counter.
“What are you doing? What if you slipped and fell?”
This dream… was one of the happiest moments in my life.
I hugged her.
The scent of vanilla is coming off from the silver hair.
“Ivan, so suddenly hugging me like this… it’s a bit…”
I wish it never end,
Because after this.
It was one of the worst moments in my life too.
From afar, my best friend walked to the library with a stack of paper.
I don’t recall what is in the paper. I don’t want to remember. But the dream forced me to read it.
She vanish from my embrace. In the past, she went ahead because I told her I was waiting for someone. My best friend who painstakingly brought the information I was searching for.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
The dream forced the real event to play, and nothing I could do to stop it.
After that, as usual in the dream, I am alone in the library as I read the paper.
It’s my first time consciously and knowingly holding and using an Irregular.
To find out my background.
~~~~~

“Why is he late?”

I know today is the day to pay off the debt interest. That’s why I repeatedly ask Jacob to not buy the painkiller.

The moonshine reveals the road of the slum. It’s still empty.

I should stop being anxious and calm down my heart. Being too vigorous isn’t good for my body.

Biting my lips, I don’t regret getting into this state. If losing an arm and burning most of the skin and then getting cursed to die meant my brother is alive and well, I would do so again.

Yet, My current pathetic state instead forced my brother to work since he was very young. Being a burden despite being an adult.

“I know you are being a thief today. Only a fool will believe being a normal clerk could earn you several golds every month.”

Muttering under her breath, I can feel my leg couldn’t hold my own height anymore. I sit on the chair outside the house.

“Foolish Jacob. System.”

I ignore most of the stat since they all stay the same anyway and focus on my health.

Health 15% Mana 30% Stamina 40%

In spite of suffering the injury for five years, my health and stamina are capped around 50%. The curse prevented my body from getting 100%.

This stupid body is too restricting, but it is still my body.

I can’t even go and be cured by the System priest. I don’t want to go to hell yet.

The only reason I have been living this long is my mana and the support of my brother. If not for him…

“Sister! Prepare the bed and hot water!”

I heard my brother shout from the other end of the road. Looking up, I saw him carrying an unconscious man.

Seeing so, I went inside to my bed and removed the dirty clothes and bandages. Then, pick the clean, empty bucket.

“[Water] [Black Flame]”

Casting two of my spells, the bucket is filled with water and warmed up by a black flame in my hand.

I think a moment before taking out a spare painkiller that I intentionally haven’t eaten yet. Just then, Jacob barges in with the unconscious man. He lay the man down the bed and nurse him with the warm water.

“Who is he? What happened to him?”

“He is… a kind acquaintance who kindly help me. I don’t know why, but he suddenly fell down while walking. Sis, what’s wrong with him?”

He said and placed a big bag on his shoulder.

Help? I checked the man’s temple with my remaining hand and noticed they were super hot. What help is it? The man is this sick but he somehow helped Jacob?

That’s when I spotted the dried blood around the tip of the sleeve and bottom of the man’s coat. Delicious aroma comes from the man.

Gulping my saliva, I ask my little brother. The detail of what happened.

“Tell me everything. I know you are hiding something.”

Jacob flinched at my cold tone. I did so to make sure he didn’t hide anything. Especially since this seems related to his work as a thief.

“But the man is…”

“It’s just the Fasycal Fever. He should be awakened in about six hours. Overall, he is alright by now.”

He would probably die in a few years though. A miserable death too.

How did he receive so many plagues and sicknesses? And why do most of them either slow-acting disease or non-fatal ones?

It’s like he earned the hatred of a Witch Doctor and cursed to suffer for a long time.

“Sis, how did you know that so precisely by just looking? At least check-”

“Doubting your sister? What is my Class again?”

“Enough speaking about the man. Tell me what happened today.”

I make sure to coldly gaze at my brother.

~~~~~
The more I looked at him, the more distracting he was.
I couldn’t even go to sleep. Otherwise, I would have done that in my sleep. Playing with the silver square-shaped item in my hand, the sound of a dog whining could be heard from the house next door.
“Annoying neighbor.”
Ignoring the dog, I am inspecting the thing that, according to Jacob, froze the thugs. It’s not frozen because of ice magic, only frozen.
There is no sign of mana inside the item, so it shouldn’t be a magic item.
“Maybe it’s a ruse, and he cast the spell without this item.”
Either way, the man helped Jacob. Tremendously so.
“At least you kill those bastard that keep running away from me.”
I placed the item back in his bag and took out an old-looking book.
“Stupid body hindering my mobility.”
My smile froze when reading the book. My left eye is filled with black dots, so I could barely read it, but my right eye is fine. Until now.
Jolting my body away from the book, I hastily heal myself. My instinct as a Doctor awakened.
“[Heal]”
The heal spell works, but a searing of pain can be felt in my right eye.
“System.”
Looking at my condition on the System, I sighed with relief because my health wasn’t as low as I thought.
Health 09% Mana 17% Stamina 35%
It’s a pity though, with my mana being this low, I couldn’t help the man today. It’s barely enough to sustain my own body, don’t mention healing others
“It’s your fault for harboring such blighted book. Now you must suffer for much longer!”
With my pent-up frustration leaking out, I continued to curse the innocent man.
“What is even that? If I were not a Doctor, I would have died right here and right now!”
Maybe I was too loud as the face of the man changed into pain. Observing that, I decided to sit down. Waiting for the man to wake up.
However, now I can’t check his belongings to find out why he looks familiar to me. It’s too risky. There is a chance something worse is in there somewhere.
“No wonder you are dying if a random book of yours can curse someone to death.”
Since it came like this, I rummaged through my memories of when I saw this man.
~~~~~

Between noon and morning, I saw the man showing signs of waking up. It’s much longer than I thought because the man somehow keep getting new diseases.

“Honestly, what’s wrong with you?”

My mana was ‘filled’, about 40%. But I need to use most of them today to maintain my stupid body.

The most I could do was alleviate the pain of the man. Complete recovery will probably take one to two weeks.

“That’s if you didn’t catch more diseases, anymore it will take longer.”

Troublesome. I need to pay the favour for helping Jacob, yet healing him would take a long time. It’s not that I feel obligated to repay it, the thought that the man would probably ask for something else is the problem.

I thought the man would have a slow wake-up, but I was wrong. Immediately jumping up from his bed, the man’s eyes wandered around the room.

“Mr Librarian? Please lay down, you are severely sick right now.”

I don’t like the formalities of calling people by their Class. It’s too crude, but the man before me saved Jacob, so I could only follow it.

“Hello? Can you hear me? Do you remember Jacob? He is my brother and he brought you here. You are riddled with so many diseases, so it will be hard to heal. Since you helped my brother, I will heal you free of char-“

Stopping my words, I looked as the man went to his bag beside the bed. Taking out a blue bottle, he popped one of the two pills to his mouth.

Before I ask why he did that, he took a colourful rock from a pouch and ate it too.

Wait, that should be the candy Jacob talked about. The man apparently has more of them.

Trying to stand up and force the man to sleep again, I saw with my own eyes the changing condition of the man.

His body is ‘reverted’ back to an optimal condition. The most peculiar thing was that I didn’t detect any mana during the process, which means it’s not magic.

System church medicine? Or some lower tier of it?

In the blink of an eye, he is healthy.

The man took a big breath before staring at me, I can’t help to say

“How did you heal so fast? What is that pill?”

Gazing at his clouded grey eyes, we have a staring contest.
