13. Face Off!

In many, many cases, Max had been that guy. The weird kid who couldn't make friends. The oddball who was the victim of several snide remarks. The freak who got bullied several times.

Could he have used his powers? Yes. In fact, had he, he would have never been bullied.

But, he made a promise to his mother. He would never stoop to that level.

However, after all his years in life, he decided that being bullied was something he would never let happen to him or anyone else again.

That rage and anger, that pain and distress, he decided long ago, that he would never let it happen to him or anyone else again. Not now, not ever. And he wasn't scared of a few wounds here and there.

And so the scrawny 15 year old glared at a young man who looked like he could kill him with a few punches.

The two stared each other down for mere seconds, but to those watching the spectacle that was their staredown, it felt like a few minutes.

Eventually, Vince spoke.

Vince: Alright, shrimp. How about this? I'll let you land the first punch.

Another round of OOOOOOhhhhhs ran around the room.

Rose: Could we call a teacher, maybe?

Tiffany: Nope. There's hardly a teacher anywhere near here at this hour.

Rose gulped.

Meanwhile, Max smirked at Vince's comment.

Max: Sure.

Max could have easily used his powers to knock him out, but then again, he promised his mom he would never use them in public and especially never to use them to hurt someone because in case someone found out about him, there would be questions.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

He knew that coming in. He knew he could get his butt kicked without them, but he still came.

Irregardless, he threw his first punch, but to his surprise, Vince dodged it.

Vince: Whoops. Missed. You should try again.

A series of OOOOOOOOhs reverberated through the room.

Max did indeed try again.

But he dodged him the second time.

Max was not much of a fighter. In fact, he was quite terrible at it. He also knew that, coming into this fight.

He threw his third punch, only for Vince to dodge it as well.

Rose: Oh no.

Luke: Other than football, Vince also has some experience with boxing. So dodging punches is childsplay to him. (thinking: What on earth were you thinking, Max?)

Rose: Really?

Luke grimly nodded.

Ken: Well then. This should be over soon.

Luke: Yeah.

Tiffany: Ugh.

Max continued to try to punch Vince, but he continued to dodge, even high fiving other footballers every once in a while just to mess with him.

Max continued his trials to punch him, failing miserably before finally falling down, much to the laughter of the entire class.

Rose: Poor Max.

Vince looked down at the fallen Max.

Vince: Hey, should I hit you first instead?

Everyone laughed loudly and even louder as Max tried to punch him only for Vince to dodge again, causing everybody to laugh even louder.

Luke: (thinking: Come on, Vince. This is cruel, even for you.)

Vince stood up and took in the crowds praise as Max tried to hit him from behind, only for Vince to dodge it as well, causing everybody to laugh again.

Vince: Ole!

The crowd answered Ole and laughed. The cheerleaders, the jocks, the nerds, everybody laughed at Max. Some even took photos on their phones.

Max got up and simply continued throwing punches.

Vince continued to dodge, this time moving in between the tables.

Vince: Hey, be careful now. You might hurt somebody.

Max kept throwing punches, his eyes fixiated on Vince.

Tiffany: (thinking: Something's not right. He should have at least once looked back at us in fear or for mercy or something. Why is he doing this?)

Rose remained with her hands up in hope.

Ken and Luke simply watched silently.

While Max was throwing punches, his mind raced with thoughts. He can't use his powers to win, so how could he?

In his mind, he could only think of one solution. While punching at Vince, his eyes were on the table next to him.

He threw a punch that looked like an uppercut, and Vince prepared to dodge as usual.

What he did not expect, however, was for a steaming plate of soggy rice to land on his face.

Max changed his punch to a grab at the last second and grabbed someone else's lunch plate and smacked Vince in his face with it.

Max: Direct hit!
