4 - Jab!

“New Quest!

Quest: Defeat Joseph Smith (0/1)

Reward: Bronze Card”

Ryan’s determination faltered as he realized.

“Defeat Joseph? He’s stronger than me. How can I beat him?”

Although he had the Jab card, what’s the use if he can’t land it? He ruffled his hair in frustration. Looking at his phone, he saw it was 9 PM. He should probably go to sleep. He lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling and thinking about what to do. He yawned and slowly drifted to sleep.

Beep beep!

He shut off his alarm and started getting ready for school, knowing he should start planning to defeat Joseph. He checked his phone again; it was 7:20 AM.

“Open System”

Ryan said in a tired tone.

“Ryan Anderson

Age: 17

Height: 170 cm

Endurance: D

Speed: E

Ryan glanced back at his stats. He was weak—really weak. He looked at the “Intelligence” stat.

“A B?”

Ryan never really saw himself as smart, but seeing that he had a B in intelligence lifted his mood a bit.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“Wait, how the hell is that going to help with Joseph?”

Ryan’s shoulders slumped. He slung his backpack onto his shoulders and headed out.

“Close System.”

He walked through the busy streets. It felt like a long, grueling walk, and he felt a sense of dread. His breath quickened as he approached the school gates. He looked around, trying to catch a glimpse of Joseph, but he was nowhere in sight. Ryan slowly entered the school, walking around. He was invisible to the eyes of the students.

“Open Quest”

Ryan muttered.

“Quest!

Quest: Defeat Joseph Smith (0/1)

Reward: Bronze Card”

He looked at the quest. How was he supposed to defeat him? How, how, ho—

Smack!

He felt a sharp stinging pain on the back of his head.

“Why weren’t you in school yesterday?” a familiar voice snickered. “Or was my beating too bad?”

Ryan slowly turned around, and there he was: Joseph Smith.

“When somebody asks you a question, you’re supposed to answer. Do you want to be taught another le—”

Joseph’s neck snapped back. He felt a stinging pain in his cheek.

“You used Jab!”

Ryan gritted his teeth, clenching so hard that his knuckles turned white. He hit him; he finally hit h—Ryan fell to the floor. Blood trickled from his nose, and he felt a stinging pain. He looked up and saw Joseph grinning.

“You grew some balls, eh?”

Joseph clenched his fist as he snickered.

“That stung a little.”

Joseph touched his cheek where he had been hit.

“Clench your teeth, bitch.”

Joseph slowly approached Ryan who’s on the floor. Ryan stood up slowly, he raised his fists as Joseph approached.

“I’m not running anymore!”

Ryan said in a determined tone. Joseph stood quiet and then he laughed. He suddenly stopped laughing and charged at Ryan. Ryan eyes widen as Joseph closes the distance.

“You used Jab!”

Joseph dodged the jab as punched Ryan on the cheek. Spit spewed from Ryan’s mouth, he was outclassed. He clenched his jaw, he threw his backpack on Joseph. Joseph was surprised at this, he deflected the backpack.

“You used Jab! Critical Hit!”

Ryan’s punch connect with Joseph’s solar plexus, Joseph started to gasp for air as he stumbled back. Joseph clenched his chest.

“You used Jab! You used Jab! You used Jab!…”

Ryan’s jabs connected with Joseph’s body. A small crowd gathered around the fight; their eyes widened as Ryan continuously pummeled Joseph. Ryan heard the continuous notification; he was getting tired, but he continued punching. He slowly stopped as he gasped for air. Sweat beads slowly dripped onto the hard, cold floor. He looked at Joseph; his face was marked with bruises, and his lips split as blood trickled down his face. Joseph fell face first at the floor. He won; he really won!

Beep!

“Quest Complete!

Quest: Defeat Joseph Smith (1/1)

Rewarded Bronze Card!”

Ryan slowly stumbled back and slumped into the floor. He looked at the quest completion notification. He was tired; he wiped his nose; he looked at his hand, which was covered with Joseph’s and his blood. The translucent screen dimly illuminated. The small crowd of students who were watching started to applause. Ryan didn’t care; all he cared was that he finally won.

“Close…close quest”

The quest window closed out as a bronze card appeared in front of his face. He was breathing slowly.

“R-reveal”

He muttered quietly. He glanced back as the card started to illuminate.
