Chapter 6: The Elevator

Chapter 6: The Elevator

The towering rectangular structure that emerged from the vitrified ground was, unmistakably, an elevator. Its chrome surface gleamed oddly against the glassy backdrop, and it bore no button or handle on its exterior. It merely stood there, its presence both a challenge and an invitation.

Jake hesitated. The abrupt change in the environment had shaken him, the voice calling him 'administrator' echoing ominously in his ears. With a deep breath, he approached the elevator. As he drew near, the doors slid open silently, revealing a darkened interior.

He stepped inside, and a soft, ambient light filled the space, bathing him in a gentle blue glow. There were no buttons on the inside either, just a smooth panel with an indentation that matched the size and shape of his pendant. With trepidation, Jake placed the pendant into the slot.

The elevator jolted to life, and Jake felt his stomach in his throat as he actually lifted off the floor a few inches. The Elevator was dropping fast. A holographic screen appeared before him, displaying lines of code and system alerts. It was apparent the elevator was more than just a means of transportation; it was an interface.

"SYSTEM ALERT: Stability compromised," the screen displayed, followed by lines of codes Jake didn't understand.

"Administrator recognized," a synthesized voice echoed.

As the elevator started to slow Jake calmed. "Where will this elevator take me?" Jake asked, realizing he had no idea of his destination.

"To the reactor room," the voice responded. "The Power Station of the system. It's where you may gain administrator privileges. You must feed new fissionable material into the main reactor for full functionality”
