Chapter 14 To the Library

As the crowd shuffled off Pete recovered and coughed. He's right, even if no one spills the beans when these three don't report back someone will be sent to investigate.” Jake thought a moment, “Well we will have to be long gone before that happens and we will have to get rid of these bodies. Help me strip them of any valuables, and search them too for any intelligence. I have an idea of how we can get rid of them, but first, we need to find out how they knew to come after you.”

They searched their belongings and found a warrant but no details as to how they found out about Pete. Jake collected everything and put it all into his storage. There were some interesting pieces of gear but he knew there was a greater risk of being found out than what the items were worth. All of it would have to be ditched but he had an idea. Of what he could do with it. First, though he had a suspicion that he wanted to resolve. “Pete call your loge meeting for right now. We need to move up our timetable. This incident has complicated things.” Pete nodded but then stuttered, “Wait how did you know about that?” Jake snapped back, “No time we need to get ahead of this!” Pete acquiesced, “Okay got it I will gather the loge and I'll meet you there. Wiz knows the location.”

Pete rushed off and Jake tossed Wiz his smaller storage ring, “Here take this, Let's go gather your things and head out. We need to get a move on.” Wiz nodded and they left for the Boom-stick All the way there Jake received stares, some of fear and many of hostility. Jake noticed there were stares of respect and even gratitude among them. He filed those away for the future.

Jake hurried Wiz through his packing and had to remind him time was of the essence. “None of this stuff with do you any good if we all end up on the executioner's block.” Wiz had a long-expression, I know it's just that...” Jake stopped him, “It's just nothing, move it or we will lose it. Nothing here is worth dying for!”

The three Approached a disused building on the outskirts of town. Jake had to push Wiz forward as he kept looking back towards his life's work. “Don't worry, where we are going nothing back there will be missed. Believe me.” Wiz replied with resignation, “I know it just leaving everything behind like this is hard to do.”

They drew near to the building and Wiz said, this is the old library. It has been condemned for years. We meet in the basement. “Okay,” Jake said. “When we get in there introduce me and then let me do the talking.” “Sure, Wiz replied, “I don't even know what I'd say.”

They walked down a narrow flight of stairs that was hidden behind a secret bookshelf door. At the bottom, there was a short hallway leading to a thick iron door with a sliding peephole built into it. Muffled murmuring could be heard beyond. Wiz pounded the door in a pattern and the slide opened up. A Gruff voice said Who goes there and Wiz replied, “The shade sings at dawn.” The door opened up and there stood a muscled towering man, “Wiz, you here. You had better get in there as the natives are getting restless.
