The journey through the desert continued for what seemed like an endless time. Each day blurred into the next as the sun blazed overhead, and the nights were filled with the eerie stillness of the vast wasteland. The raised road became Jake's lifeline, keeping him safe from the monstrous predators lurking beneath the sand.
He continued to ponder the quest that had brought him here, the city of glass. What could be waiting for him there? Could he find answers to the mysteries that had consumed his life? Could he discover a way to exact revenge on the system that had betrayed him? Only time will tell.
The journey was hard, but Jake's determination was unwavering. He pushed through, sustained by his resolve and the supplies he had carefully prepared. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, a glimmer of green appeared on the horizon.
Nestled amidst the barren desert, the oasis was a paradise of lush greenery, sparkling water, and towering palm trees. It was a welcome sight after the relentless monotony of the desert.
Jake descended from the raised road, approaching the oasis with caution. The sudden abundance of life was both inviting and suspicious in this unforgiving environment. He couldn't afford to let his guard down.
Upon entering the oasis, Jake found himself in a bustling market town. Traders, travelers, and locals filled the streets, trading goods and exchanging stories. The place was filled with an eclectic mix of cultures, a melting pot of people seeking refuge from the desert's harshness.
He secured a room in one of the local inns, eager for some rest and the chance to gather information about the city of glass. But even in this haven, he felt eyes upon him, watching his every move.
The next day, Jake set about exploring the oasis and speaking with the locals. Most had only heard whispers and rumors about the city of glass. Jake spotted a man selling horses at a nearby stable. He walked up to him and gave him an appraising look. He was decked out in cowboy gear but what had caught his eye was a six-shooter holstered at his hip. Jake asked, “Hey old timer, where did you get that?” Pointing to the revolver.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
The cowboy grinned and said, “Well that is a specialty item made by a local artisan. It's called a shooting iron. My name's Crazy Pete and this here is Crazy Pete's horse trading bazaar. It's no fancy Horse Dealership like they got out west.” he spat. “But my horses are top-notch you won't find better and my prices are insane!”
Jake's eyes narrowed, “So you know the owner of that horse dealership?” Crazy Pete's face soured, “Yeah that piece of work is a liar and a cheat! He's cost me good business over the years. You know him?” Jake corrected, “I knew him, he won't be dealing in any more horses.” Crazy Pete Laughed with a huge grin and exclaimed, “That's the best news I've heard all week! Tell you what I'm in such a great mood let me make you a bet. If you can take this here shooting iron and hit that there target over yonder, I'll direct you to where I got it, if not I'll still direct you to where I got it and you will agree to buy one of these here horses. I'll even give you all six shots.”
Jake smiled and countered, “Tell you what, let's raise the stakes, If I hit all six shots you give me a horse, and tell me where I can find the city of glass.” The horse traded laughed and said, “I don't know where the city of glass is but for sure the one who made this shooting iron here does. If there's something worth knowing he's your man, but in the spirit of fairness I'll warn ya. Shooting spells won't help ya here. You may be some fancy caster and be able to shoot the hairs off a fly's testicles at a hundred yards but this is another animal altogether. However, if you still wanna wager if you hit all six shots I'll give ya a horse and I'll take you to the man myself, if however if you miss then you but two horses.” Jake held out his hand and said, “You got yourself a deal.”
Jake took the revolver and with a flourish, he fanned the hammer and the metal target rang out so fast it sounded like all six shots had hit at once.” Jake flourished the revolver one last time presenting it back butt first. Crazy Pete just stood there jaw dropped for a few seconds. He took the revolver back and just stared at it. “How did you do that?” with a smirk Jake replied, “Must be beginner's luck.”
Pete just shook his head, “Well now I've seen everything. Well, a deal is a deal. Just follow me and I'll get you fitted with a saddle.” Jake smiled and said, “Okay my friend let's go.”
Jake rode with Pete and they chatted heading to the far side of town. As they drew near Jake saw there were many shops on this street. Vendors were selling carpets, weapons, food, and other wares. A Warehouse stood among the many stalls and storefronts and as they approached Pete pointed and said, “That's the place. I have to get now, as those horses aren't gonna sell themselves. It was nice meeting you Jake and I hope we cross paths again.” Jake shook his hand and they parted ways.
