The Fall

Chapter 3 The Fall

Mistakes are deadly on a mountain, and I had made enough of them. Stuck on a mountain in a blizzard, with dwindling supplies, a day or two's hike away from any local town, I had to leave. I couldn't stay on the mountain, not with the little supplies I had. So I set out in the pre-dawn to make the trek back before I starved or froze.

This turned out to be my biggest mistake.

The cold saps at you, draining warmth. The light becomes blinding, reflecting off of every flake. Every step becomes uncertain. Is it safe to step here? Am I going in the right direction? Just how far away is the edge? The wind bites, gnawing at what's left of my will. the knowledge seeps in with every step, I'll die if I stop. I'll die if I step wrong. I'll die, I'll die, I'll die. A mantra with every freezing breath. Soon my eyes can't even see my hands, I'll die.

I'll die, but it wont be because I didn't try.

Ill die, but I wont step wrong.

I'll die, but I wont stop.

If I can't see, then I'll just have to check every step before I make it. Down is an easy direction, don't need eyes for that.

One foot in front of the other. One more step. One more step. One more

*CRACK*... The ground shifts, and I feel, weightless. One more step...

Down is a direction...

I just didn't want to go this fast...

Looks like I'll be dying then...

My body jerks to the side! Something interrupting my fall. The blur no different than the surrounding blizzard. The cold eating the last of me as I fall unconscious, but even as I do, I can still realize that I'm being saved. And whatever saved me,

Isn't Human.
