Chapter 52 Team building.

It took a couple of hours but the first Mini-fort was up and ready for the first of the new residents to move in.

It would be rough living compared to pre-pulse, but the living quarters would be secure although with limited running water supplied by a gravity-fed cistern for the toilets and was connected to the stormwater system that Louie sensed running under the marketplace.

There are also two wells that he sunk in the square inside the mini-forts for the purpose of drinking and bathing water.

He was running low on lightstones so for the moment there was no lighting inside the rooms, but he hoped that Gerard would have somebody who would be able to learn to engrave and start with the light rune or he would have to go back and get more lightstones from the Dungeon.

He hopes to supply every residence with running water and lights when he systemizes the compound with a capstone, but the first capstone will be for the marketplace.

Clearing the ruins netted them some raw materials, like copper piping and wiring as well as wooden beams from the trusses. The biggest find was all the reinforcing that was leftover after the liquefied earth was removed.

For now metal wasn't scarce but Louie remembered the blacksmiths in ST talking about the metal bottlenecks that will happen in the future.

It was just before midnight when they left the compound, so Louie thought it a good idea to get the ball rolling and sent one militia member of his team to tell Arnold that the first of the apartments were done.

As they entered the gate of the market they were met by Leon and the next group of trainees, that were going to hunt some monsters in the compound

"You guys done?"

"Yip, for now, the first apartments are up."

"It sounds good, but we got to go. I gotta get these guys started. There is only so much night left and I want to see if we can't unlock Dark vision or some night vision skill."

"Yeah okay, we can go over the plans tomorrow. The darkvision should work. Half of my team unlocked tonight, it seems that the stress of battle is good for unlocking skills."

"My thoughts exactly." Leon waved as he and his team started through the gate.

Louie called after him.

"Good luck. I'm going to start with the wall around the shantytown before I turn in for the night."

Leon waved back in acknowledgment as he and his team moved through the gate and into the ruins.

The market was quiet with only the guards patrolling the wall and here and there one of the spiders walking around.

There was still light uncovered at the tavern and it looked like the place had become a gathering spot for people to meet and just socialize since there were alot of people just standing around fire pits talking.

All the other recruits from the militia were also there.

After telling his team to take a rest he grabbed a fresh recruit/protection team and headed out to start on the wall surrounding the shantytown, luckily the town ran up smack against the southern wall of the Market so it was easy to start.

It only took Louie five hours to do the wall around the shantytown, since it's only half the size of the STC compound.

BOB ranged through the surrounding wreckage, flushing rats and other creatures out to lead them back for the recruits to kill. This made them happy since they didn't have to go look for monsters in the dark, he was nearly done with the wall around the shanties and he could see that his team was starting to make mistakes. They nearly lost one of the tanks, who was too tired to react fast enough, to an attack by an oversized mutated Worshond.

Only after it was killed did Louie see what attacked them and he felt sad, because if there was one breed of dog that he always liked it was the Dachshund. He had read somewhere that they were originally bred specifically to hunt and kill weasels and he could readily believe that because this one was vicious, it was the size of a pony, twice as long, and had the mentality of a crazed shark

Wienerdog. (Deceased)

This Giant Dachshund has been mutated by the system. It was originally bred to scent, chase, and hunt badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, Dachshunds were rated the most aggressive, with 20% having bitten strangers, as well as high rates of attacks on other dogs and their owners. The System made them bigger, tougher, and more bloodthirsty.

Faint light was starting to creep above the horizon as the young recruits stumbled into the yard of the tavern and Louie bid them good night or good morning before he turned to his tent for an hour or two of sleep.

Three hours later he was back at the tavern and received a hearty bowl of Krummel pap topped with some of the previous night's leftover stew when Arnold found him.

"Morning Louie, how you doing?"

Louie greeted him between bites and indicated that he should take a seat as Nickey placed a bowl of pap and stew in front of him.

"Morning, you settling the first group of settlers into the mini-forts?"

Arnold took a bite of his breakfast before answering,

"Jip just brought the group from Leon where they took the oath… I like the setup of the … mini-fort you called it? I like that."

"Thanks, Listen, I have been thinking. I want to leave every second block open for some kind of park or something, make the whole compound like a checkerboard with the white squares mini-forts and the black squares open to nature. What do you think?"...

"I like that, and I like the idea of the forts, maybe connect each with a bridge, In the event that the compound walls are breached, then the gate of the forts can be closed and the streets will turn into a labyrinth of canyons with people firing from the roofs and bridges down on the invading monsters."

"My idea exactly, I once read a story along those lines a couple of years ago. It was about this race of horsefolks that built a giant walled city out on the plains, when the gates were breached the enemy was faced with not a city, but a labyrinth inside the walls, and the inhabitants lived on top of the two hundred feet tall labyrinthian walls."

"Damn that must have been brutal."

"Yea, if I remember correctly, the city gates were built to be collapse on purpose and after the enemy army entered the city, a new set of gates would emerge out of the walls to block their retreat."

Arnold looked thoughtful. "That might actually work, once everybody is gone from the shantytown and into your mini-forts then we can channel the beast waves through the gates and the residents can get archery practice."

"Sounds good, at the moment we can line the walls of the shantytown, the compound, and the market with archers and spearmen and try to funnel the beasts between those walls down what used to be the main road. Let the beast run turn into the running of the bulls while everybody fights from the walls."

"Good, I will see what I can do in starting to draw up contingency plans."

Louie agreed. "Hope for the best while planning for the worst."

"Exactly."

Louie took the last spoonful of Krummelpap.

"Have you seen Sher?"

"She is the lady with the green highlights in her hair that grew the trees?"

"Yes. She is a Druid, Gaea's Druid, it's a good idea to keep on her good side."

Arnold snorted as he nodded, "you just described every woman I know, it's a brave man who crosses an angry woman,"

Louie nodded.

"I saw her and another woman singing to the tree."

"Singing?" Louie asked.

"Yes they were standing there softly humming with their eyes closed and swaying from side to side, I didn't want to disturb them, some young girl said she saw you here when I asked."

"Thanks, I will go look for her there. I will see you around."

Arnold nodded. "I will send some more recruits over here, you guys can choose from them to level when you go to clear out more of the ruins."

Louie found Sher right where Arnold said she would be, and it did look as if she and Rowena were singing to the tree.

Sher has been busy the whole morning with creating a shrine to Gaea and working on the tree, Rowena had joined Sher and was eager to learn.

Sher had explained to her about meditation, and after half an hour she had unlocked the skill and another skill named, which let her influence the growth of a tree into shaping different things like trying to grow a set of stairs around the tree and up into the branches and meditating every now and then when her mana ran out.

The shrine was situated between two huge roots of the giant fur tree that stood in the middle of the marketplace and towered over Paarl.

Sher has been using her Druidic power to shape an opening in the tree where she had formed an altar.

Sher hopes that the tree will become a temple of Gaea after Louie used a capstone to transform the marketplace due to the fact that the marketplace was linked to the tree by the spilk bridges that the spiders wove from the corner towers to the treetop.

Louie saw Naomi and her 'Gang' standing to one side and blocking people that looked to interrupt the Druid and her companion.

"Hi you guys, what are you guys doing?"

"Hi uncle Louie, we are keeping the people away from aunty Sher while she is working with the tree."

"Yea?"

"Yip, she said that they were going to try to shape the trunk of the tree to see if they can make it grow a spiral staircase all around the tree into the leaves where she planned to ask Ansi and the spiders to weave a kind of treehouse between the branches for her and Rowena to live in. Can we also live up there in the treehouse, Uncle Louie?"

Louie smiled at the enthusiasm of the children but he knew that the need to climb a hundred-meter tree on a spiral staircase every day will quickly lose its appeal for them.

"Sure, if Sher, Rowena, and your Mother agree."

He saw their faces fall as they thought of asking their mother since Celia had taken Trish and David under her wing and considered them all her children.

Louie bumped her with his hip.

"Cheer up, you never know, she might say yes."

*Sigh* "Yes she might." But he could see that they didn't hold much hope for that.

The marketplace is 122000 square meters which are dominated by the nearly hundred and fifty meters tall tree in the middle of the space.

Since Sher was busy Louie waved at Naomi and her crew as he walked away and decided to open the underground stockrooms of the checkers that he had sealed after he cleared the rubble to build the wall of the marketplace.

He went to the living quarters behind the tavern and after talking to some of the off-duty guards, giving them each a ten sq BOTs, to remove the stock from the stockrooms.

They used all the gathered blankets and bedding that he gathered from the houses and buildings that he cleared as he built the mini-fort and wrapped the stock before placing it all in the motorcars that he removed from his WTF chest, stuffing each full to the brim.

He had discovered a loophole in his contract with his Dungeon and meant to exploit it to the full.

The guards thought he had gone bonkers but did as they were told, afterward he fed the vehicles to his dungeon ring.

There was nearly a mutiny as they saw all the canned foodstuff disappear, but after he explained and showed them a BOT that he removed from his ring, they stood in amazement before renewing their effort in clearing out all the stock.

After they were done, he took them over to the Tavern and removed the BOTs from his inventory they helped to stock the underground stockroom that he sculpted for the soup kitchen/Tavern.

Mixed in with the stock were some toys and electrical appliances that were changed by the system. He kept one of each that he meant to give it to Gerard to see what his Tinker class could do with it, before giving a set of each to Nickey, and the rest he gave to Celia to use as she saw fit.

He only kept the box with the trap balls to himself to give each of the original STC members at least two for use with their pets.

After the storerooms were emptied out he transformed the shoddy construction with his spell together with some blocks of stone and lumber from the termite mound and mana crystal dust, into more durable storage lockers for the traders, with the option to later convert it into an underground mall, like the one he saw in Cape Town once.

There was another minimall where the safe zone now was. Louie wondered if they had cleared out its stockrooms before they built their shelters on the ruins, he would have to ask Shadow about the layout of the safezone and what she found out when she returned from scouting the gang.

He was slightly worried because he hasn't been able to contact her since last night, but there could be many causes, and she is a big girl he knew she can take care of herself.

He was still miffed about the promise of safe passage he gave the gang to attend the leadership meeting, he knew that his team was trying to force him to be more politically correct when dealing with some situations, but there are times when the right thing to do is to just curb stomp evil before it could infect the whole countryside.

The southeastern corner of the market, where the tavern and the new guards' residence were now situated, had a small museum that mostly featured historical and cultural exhibits depicting the history of the Paarl Valley in the Western Cape. The museum had displays of various period furnishings, antiques, stinkwood furniture, kitchenware, and a large collection of porcelain, silver, artifacts, documents, and photographs.

From the wreckage of the building, they recovered a lot of old kitchenware, the kind that was used before there was electricity, which would come in very handy. Louie tried to use and failed since it is considered pre-pulse and something that he hasn't worked on yet. Since he hasn't got the time to spend a whole day dismantling the apparatuses, he asked Derek to see if he could get it back into working order and then planned to use to create blueprints of the items.

Louie had thought to dump it in a box and place it in a vehicle to feed to his Dungeon ring and see what he got back in a BOT, but he first wanted to see if he could make a blueprint of the implements.

He waved over his helpers and sticking them to lunch. They had a nice tomato stew with rice, but Nickey promised freshly baked buns for dinner since there was a lot of flour in the stockroom.

Just after lunch he, Mainey, and Kotche together with another mixed team of newbies moved out to the foot of Paarl rock to look for a possible nest since there were sightings of strange frog-like monsters there.

BOB, shrunk to his smaller size, although he was never small, took up his duty of flusher again and started kiting monsters for the newbies to kill.

It took them just over an hour and a couple of fights with rats and a new creature that some pigeons changed into to reach the site marked on the map.

He had first thought it was some kind of griffin but the closest he could come to describing it was if a diseased ally cat mated with a diseased pigeon and produced some kind of griffin-like offspring.

On closer inspection, it turned out that its four-legged contribution came from a rat and not a cat.

Pigeon Rat (Deceased)

Pigeons were the most unhygienic and messy birds that actually carry more diseases than rats. With the integration of the system, they were changed into rats with wings. With that, the new pigeons are explicitly linked to disorder and disease.

"Fuck, flying rats, what's next?" Kotche asked as he looted the big housecat-sized monster.

Pigeon Rat Loot

1 silver coin

1 x cracked beak

4 x diseased claws

1kg rotten meat

15 x Dirty scraps of material.

"Damn, that's nasty." One of the militia guys said.

Kotche agreed as he dumped the rotten meat.

"I hope they don't flock as pigeons do, that can turn deadly real quick."

Mainey shuddered in revulsion at the diseased look of the creatures as Louie stored one of the creatures to show Sher.

They found a small stream of water running down the side of Paarl rock, and Louie decided to call a break since he saw that the constant vigilance was wearing the newbies down.

Louie bent down and using his hands, he scooped a handful of water and drank it down with big gulps, the water flowed smoothly down his throat. He stopped to think for a moment.

This was the first time that he had drunk any water out in nature, trying to think back, he couldn't remember drinking from a river or spring since the apocalypse happened. They had drunk water in the dungeon, but that didn't count. Since then he had drunk water bought from the vendor or drinks, but not once had he drunk pure unfiltered or unprocessed water in nature.

He shrugged and took another mouthful of water. It passed over his taste buds, smooth and refreshing. The water tasted different than he remembered from before. Its flavor was fuller, richer than he would have expected. It was strange because as far as he was aware, water was supposed to have no flavor.

He paused again. 'I wonder if the amount of mana in the air has anything to do with the taste of things like water, or is it to do with my higher perception?'

They found the first frog-like creature at a dam where the stream was blocked and the flow diverted to run between the houses, and after one of the militia members volunteered to do some scouting they located the nest in the remains of a guesthouse marked on the street map as Beds@Paarl. The area was infested by the skinny bipedal frog-like creature.

"What the fuck? Is that a Murloc?" One of the recruits asked.

"Murlock?" Louie mouthed silently before Kotche explained softly that it was a race that appeared in a game called Warcraft.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

Louie nodded before he used and saw that the creatures were called Platannas, which literally translated into 'flat frogs'.

He clicked on the name in the BB.

Platanna spawn level 4

These are an intelligent sapient species and were also known, before the System, as African clawed frogs, these “flat frogs” live in natural water-bodies, but you might see them in any pond. They also don’t mind living in the local sewerage works. At the end of the rainy season, they bury themselves under wet mud, where they hibernate until the next rain.

These platannas have powerful back legs and sharp claws on three of their toes. They can hold prey in their mouths and tear it with an overhead “kick” with their back legs and will feed on any living creatures they can overpower.

They were armed with sharp sticks as spears and slivers of glass and metal that they used as knives in their attacks.

The platannas were no match for them as they moved around in groups of twos and trees. There were also a couple of crude traps that were easily avoided.

The Platannas attacked in their groups but he could see that they were unsure about how to use their weapons, more than once they would drop their spears and try to grapple their opponents, which led to their quick death.

It's like somebody told them what to do but didn't show them how to do it.

Louie started to feel bad since it felt like they were up against groups of five-year-old children armed with sharp sticks, but he did use the opportunity to grind his and spells and work out a bit of tactic with his team.

They found the Matriarch and her personal bodyguards in one of the pools of the destroyed guesthouse.

The blocked off stream had been diverted to run through the yard of the destroyed B&B and trickled into the two big pools in the front yard

They were nearly caught unaware as the guards launched themselves from the scum-filled green pool where they laid in ambush for them.

BOB took one from the air and Louie cast Cauterise and cleaved the other in half.

Analysing the Matriarch, Louie learned that she was a simple frog that was mutated by the System and that only her spawn would be sapient.

Mutated Matriarch Clawed Frog

This frog was mutated by the System into a two meters tall monstrosity that will give birth to hundred live young tadpoles that will grow to adult size in two weeks. The young become fertile at six months and have the ability to change sex if there are too many of one gender. The matriarch can give birth every two weeks, young tadpoles don't carry the moniker 'mutated' and appear to be the start of a new sapient species.

Mainey was at two minds about killing all the creatures because they were intelligent and a new species, she wanted to give them a chance so Louie compromised by trapping two of the strongest looking bodyguards in trap balls and then killed the matriarch and all the spawn to loot the nest and received the capstone.

He was a bit conflicted because when looting the Platannas they received giant frog drumsticks and he didn't know how to feel about that because the Platannas were classified as sapient, but decided to leave it up to the leaders.

This was the easiest nest they have cleared so far and as the militia was joking around about how kickass they were, Kotche spotted a couple of dark spots diving from the air.

"Incoming!"

It immediately became apparent that these were a totally different variety of griffin-like creatures, as they shrieked, folded their wings, and dove at them.

Louie Kotche and Mainey used their lightning wands while the militia raised their tower shields to guard the other members using their crossbows.

The griffins were agile and easily evaded their lightning bolts not to mention the bolts from the crossbows, and retaliated with airblades

"Shit, they have magical abilities."

"Flash, evade!" Louie shouted and his team closed their eyes for a second and scrambled out of the way as he cast and canceled it immediately.

The griffins shrieked as they were suddenly blinded by the flash of darkness, and smashed into the ground.

Louie heard bones snap as one of the teens did not react fast enough and was bowled over by the plummeting griffin as it struck his shield at over a hundred kilometers an hour.

He rushed closer and using he removed the griffin's head before running to help the others to kill the two other stunned monsters.

"Louie! I need your help!"

He looked over to Mainey where she was struggling to heal the teen that was hit by the griffin.

"Fuck" he sprinted over to try and help.

"I used all my spells and skills, I will have to put him in ."

"I have given him a potion but he is bleeding out, there are too many broken bones sticking through his skin and I cant close all the wounds, nearly every bone in his body is broken, we need to get him to Sher." She was starting to panic as she tried to bandage the wounds to try and stop the bleeding.

Louie looked over to where the militia fought the last griffin and cast on it as he used on the teen who had luckily passed out from the pain.

Mainey sat back in relief as bones snapped back in place as the teen's chest cavity reformed and most of the wounds closed.

"I forgot that you also have a kind of healing spell now."

Suddenly stopped and Louie saw the griffin slumped to the ground with a spear through its head. He kept on feeding the teen health through till his own health dropped to half and saw that the kid was out of immediate danger.

"I don't want to give him another health potion while he is unconscious, he might choke."

"Hmm, ok, that should be enough for now, let's put him in , and move out so we can get him to Sher."

The militia obviously came prepared as they quickly put a stretcher together from their inventory and loaded the golden stasis cocoon on the stretcher and strapped it down before they all set off at a jog after Louie quickly stored the griffin carcasses in his bracelet.

They traveled fast and Louie heard a commotion every now and then in the rubble as BOB left off kitting the monsters and made sure that nothing was trying to ambush them on the way back to the market.

As they neared the gate of the compound Louie saw a group of people trying to bluster their way through the gate.

Some of the people started in his direction but he ignored them as they quickly passed through the gate, across the main road, and into the market towards the medic caravan.

There was a long row of people in front of the caravan, who made way as they saw the stretcher-bearing militia.

Sher came running over as he raised a table to place the cocoon on.

"What happened?" She asked as Mainey removed the cocoon and she started healing the teen. "Gods, it looked like he was hit by a truck."

Mainey pointed out the most serious injuries with her skill while Sher switched to before going back to

Forest blessing (T4 Lvl 8)

Caster can heal a friendly target using nature magic. Target will receive an extended heal over time (HoT) of 5hp/sec for 45 seconds.

Health output will increase at higher levels of this spell.

Mana cost: 50mp

"He was injured when a griffin smashed into him at full speed, about hundred to hundred thirty kilometers per hour, if it was before the pulse, he would have died on the scene," Louie replied.

The people looked on in wonder as injuries slowly healed when she removed her glowing hands from the teen.

"He will be ok, just need food and rest."

There was an all-round sigh of relief from his teammates as the teen opened his eyes and groggily looked around as he sat up.

Louie slapped him on his shoulder, "next time put more points into agility, it will increase your reaction time."

The teen and his mates thanked Louie, Mainey, and Sher before they left for their barracks at the militia headquarters, while being roasted by his friends as they walked off, him bare-chested carrying the remains of armor.

Louie shook his head, "thanks, you two, that was well done."

There were shouts of fear and amazement as Louie dropped the lion-sized griffins next to the table for the harvesters to dismantle.

"I would like any cores that are available."

"Yes sir."

Louie saw that there was a notice board up between the STC crafters, where people can place requests for ingredients needed, and as he neared the board he saw that Micheal had placed a couple of requests there.

The moment he removed some of the slips from the board he received a BB with the quest.

Guild quest: Bambi's mom

Bring three deerskins to Micheal at the market.

Reward: 1 Silver

Repeatable

Accept? Yes/No

Guild quest: Wascally Wabbit

Bring ten rabbit skins to Micheal at the market.

Reward: 5 Bronze

Repeatable

Accept? Yes/No

Guild quest: No, not Pumba!

Bring four warthog bodies down to Micheal at the market.

Reward: 2 Silver

Repeatable

Accept? Yes/No

"How did you do this?" Louie asked Micheal.

"I asked Leon, he said that it's a perk he got the moment you placed him in charge of STC, he called it a Guild perk, the noticeboard is something made by the system for our guild."

"Aah, I had forgotten that STC is actually a Guild. This means that Joe had finally leveled up Starter Town and built a Guildhall.

Louie saw the people that he evaded at the gate come walking in his direction with the leader clutching a tatered briefcase to his chest.

'Ai, what the fuck is the meaning of this now?'

"Sir, hello Sir!"

Louie stopped and turned to the man.

*Sigh* "Yes, how can I help you?"

The man moved over to one of the cleared tables that was used by the harvesters.

"The guards at the gate said that you were in charge here." He opened his case and removed a stack of papers, holding it out to Louie.

Louie looked at the papers, he could clearly see that the pages were deteriorating and won't last much longer.

He did not move to touch the papers even as the man tried to shove it in his hand, he took a step back.

"What's the meaning of this?"

"These," the man waved the papers at Louie "are property papers. I-" there was a cough behind him. "We own property inside there, these are the records of our properties."

"Good. Glad to meet you all."

The man's face cleared into a smile, but some of his followers were immediately suspicious.

"So, when can we move into our properties?"

Louie smiled brightly. "Why, right now."

"Now?" The man asked, confused.

"Yes, let me just remove the wall and you can go right in and go clear out your property and start building your houses again."

"Move the wall? Clear the property?"

"Yes, you see, inside the wall is my property, since you have papers claiming property then I can't have your property inside my property, that's just too confusing.

"So I will move my wall to run just pass your property and then you and your fellowship can move on to your property and start clearing it out, we can't have nests of monsters next to the wall.

"You will have to clear it out today or tomorrow because we are expecting a beast wave at any moment now."

The man saw that the discussion wasn't going as he had hoped when there was a loud voice.

"What the hell are you trying to pull here Seth!"

Arnold had seen the gathering and approached the group from the back just in time to hear Louie's proclamation.

The man, Seth's smile dropped from his face as he cringed away from Arnold, the whole group of people tried to disappear in the gathering crowd.

"I have had enough of the scams you are trying to pull." He waved at a couple of guards and they grabbed Seth.

"Throw him out, he is banned from the Shantytown."

Arnold slammed his hand down on the briefcase as Seth spluttered and cursed as the last of his supporters melted away in the crowd

"Known associates of yours?"

"Fucking Scumbag, He was a real estate agent before the pulse, I have had a couple of complaints from people that he tried to swindle out of their hard-gathered resources. I think he held on to these and saw an opportunity and thought he could score big from you."

"Ha, he doesn't know Louie." Micheal laughed.
