"Centurion."
The man hiding his nervousness and shock at what he had just seen behind tradition, greeted Louie back.
"Sir."
The centurion heard his troops shuffle around behind him.
*Cough* With just a slight clearing of his throat the troops were all standing steady with shields raised and weapons drawn again, to protect the civilians if needed.
Gripping his shield and the pommel of his sword he nervously looked over the dangerous group of people before him.
"What can I do for you, sir?"
Slowly the people got back to picking fruit after they had frozen in terror when the big monster had ripped through the men.
Louie stood easy as he explained to the centurion that they are new to the neighborhood and that they will be trying to help the people. He drew him a rough minimalist sketch of their plans to assure him that they are there to try and help those that needed it and those that want to be helped.
With a promise of a meeting, later on, they moved further down the road till they reached the parking lot that he had noticed earlier on their way to the shebeen.
*****
The Centurion rubbed his brow to try and get rid of his headache. 'Those people . . . were dangerous.' He wasn’t sure if that was a good or a bad thing. 'At least he came to talk and not to demand. Then, he proceeded to talk about helping to improve the living conditions, the last thing we need is another would be king.'

"Here, I think we will build the market here."
Leon shook his head. "Isn't this the place where all those guys were digging?"
"Yip."
There were a couple of groans from his companions as Louie softly laughed.
"Did you guys notice that they have all withdrawn into their 'safe zone' and closed the gate?"
Leon, Kotche, and Sher came and stood next to him looking at the walled enclosure in the distance.
"Looks like there are a lot of guys on the wall," Kotche said.
"On the apartment roof also, probably the 'King' and his knights." Leon agreed
Louie spoke to Sher. "Let me clear away these motorcars and then I want you to give them a show, we need to keep them in there till tomorrow morning."
"We are going to use this space later?"
"Yip, marketplace."
"Aah ok, I think the marketplace can do with some shade.."
Louie walked around and placed all the vehicles in his WTF chest before giving Sher the go-ahead.
She walked to the middle of the parking lot and for a show, she started to draw, made up runes and squiggles ensuring not to imbue anything with mana, not wanting to accidentally summon any demons or some other monsters. She was just scribbling on the broken asphalt while stopping now and then to dramatically dribble some mysterious powder here and there, making a big show about nothing.
Louie took out his binoculars and saw that most of the observers behind the walls were focused on what Sher was doing.
They moved through a door in one of the ruined buildings at the back of the parking lot and Louie quickly stabilized the rubble by fusing most of it with
Suddenly the ground rumbled.
They exited the door and saw a tree pushing itself out of the ground next to Sher.
The Ash tree grew and grew till it overshadowed even the apartment block inside the safe zone and still it grew.
"Fuck me." Sean got a smack on the back of his head from Witney.
"Sorry," He looked embarrassed, "but that is bloody impressive."
"It is, wait here." Louie walked towards where Sher was standing next to the tree.
She slowly bent down, touched the ground, and again BOB appeared next to her, Louie saw her lean against BOB as he moved between her and those watching from the walls. The moment that they moved behind the tree trunk and out of the view of the gawkers she collapsed against the tree just as Louie reached her. He placed a camping chair for her to sit in.
"Damn Sher, I just meant for you to give them something to gawk at, not to try and raise Yggdrasil."
"Yggdrasil? What's that?"
"In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is a tree linking all the plains of different realities. It's a tree bigger than all the worlds."
She waved her hand. "The system said it's a 'Mimameid sapling'."
She gave a tired smile, as she raised her head. "I got carried away, but it should settle down now . . . damn why is it still growing?" She sounded concerned as she tiredly reached a hand out towards the tree trunk.
"It's still drawing mana from somewhere."
Louie helped her to her feet and stowing the chair they slowly backed away from the tree.
It took over twenty minutes for the tree to stop growing, and for Sher to recover some of her energy. The trees' shadow covered the whole parking lot and overtopped the apartment building from the safezone by a hell of a lot.
Everywhere they looked they saw people looking up at the massive ash tree that towered over a hundred and fifty meters into the sky and its branches spread out to cover an area of over a hundred meters, the tree was at least fifteen meters in diameter.
Sher walked around the tree till she was sure the guards on the wall could see her and using
A While later she stepped out of the back of the tree, out of sight of those on the wall, to where Louie and her companions were waiting for her
"What can you tell us?"
"There was a pocket.. a Geode with mana stones inside and the roots grew around it and absorbed it. Now it's inside the root system, the tree slowed down its growth for now, but it will keep on growing till there is no more mana in the stones left."
"So it will grow bigger?"
"Yes, about three times the normal growth rate."
"Damn."
"We will just need some Druid to keep trimming it." Everybody stared at Jackson.
"What? Trim its top to restrict its growth, like a bonsai."
They shook their heads but Louie looked thoughtful.
BOB was patrolling the perimeter and every time he went past the front of the safe zone he would stop and growl at the people on the wall who answered by shooting arrows at him, which he ignored, before moving on.
Louie shook his head at the antics of his pet. "It doesn't look like there are many magic users there."
"There isn't."
They all swung around ready to fight as they heard the unknown voice behind them.
"Wow there, sorry for barging in, but I couldn't help but overhear your conversation."
Louie relaxed and looked between her and the nearest people who were over sixty meters away on the other side of the parking lot. The older woman had the grace to look embarrassed.
"I saw the tree go up and I was on my way to investigate when I saw you. I decided to come and talk to you, then I overheard you mention magic users."
Louie looked around and saw Leon shrug as he looked at him.
He nodded at the old woman. "I'm Louie and these are my companions, who are you and how can we help you?"
She held out her hand which Louie shook.
"I'm Rowena, used to have a nursery up that way before all this happened," She pointed in the general direction of the safezone. "Rawel nursery across from the police academy, now it's overrun with flesh-eating plants." When she saw their frowns, she just shrugged.
"As I said, I saw the tree go up and had to come to see, I got a skill called
She looked around. "Who raised the tree?"
Sher stepped forward, "I did, I'm a Druid."
"Druid? Like the guy in a white robe with his golden sickle, making strength potions for Obelix and his Gaulish friends?"
Sher looked perplexed while there were a couple of chuckles and Louie had to smile. 'Damn, I love those comics.'
"No, these are more plant loving . . . wait, here.,"
He analyzed Sher and concentrated on Druid before sharing the BB with Rowena.
Class: Druid
Details: Whether calling on the elemental forces of nature or emulating the creatures of the animal world, druids are an embodiment of Gaea's resilience, cunning, and fury. They claim no mastery over nature. Instead, they see themselves as extensions of Gaea's indomitable will.
She read the BB in amazement. "How did you do that?
"Just one of a bunch of tricks we picked up, You said that there aren't many magic users?"
She shook her head, "yea, it is flashy but once you run out of power you are stuck using blades, so why waste time with magic that will take days to recharge."
She saw everybody looking at her in dumbfounded confusion.
They invited Rowena into the shelter they had created and talked about the town and what they meant to do there while sharing a plate of termite meat with a cup of coffee.
Rowena told them that the next day was an unofficial market day, where everybody that has anything that they would like to exchange for food or barter for something that might be useful, would gather in front of Nickey's shebeen and displayed their wares to be bought or bartered.
Louie took a chance and told her his plan for this space and asked her to spread the news that there will be stalls available tomorrow and for every day after.
"Hmm, a secure marketplace would be great, but there might be trouble from some of the smaller groups that work for protection."
They talked for a while and after Rowena left they kept themselves busy, by planning the layout of the marketplace and thinking of how to handle potential problems, till the sun went down and Louie saw the guards on the walls light their fires.
They were a bit miffed because it looked like they had reached the limit that their OCD could transmit messages since they couldn't reach Joe but were still in contact with Mountain Holm. Louie had thought of experimenting to boost the range of the OCDs but will try to do that later. For now, they will bounce their messages by asking MH to send them on.
They stepped outside and he started to create the wall that would surround the marketplace.
He started with the ruins that they were camping in and liquified the stone of that ruin and all those around them, sculpting it into blocks and storing them in his inventory.
As he walked the perimeter he liquefied all the rubble in the diameter of his spell and gathering it to him he started sculpting the wall behind him as far as he walked. He formed the liquid rock into a solid 3x3 meter high stone base and on the second round he sculpted his wall and built it up with every circuit he made till they were ten meters high. He used the same method as he did in raising the Fort.
On top of the walls, he placed battlements that consisted of a parapet, behind which was a covered wall walk. The parapet was crenelated with merlons to protect the troops. It had embrasures that allowed them to use their spears or wands from behind cover.
He also places a covered Lightstone every ten meters apart on the outsides of the merlons but kept it covered till the next day, so it would keep the light out of the defenders' eyes.
He gathered all the extra stone and brought it to the northwest corner facing the safezone and raised a small tower with a diameter of five meters wide and thirty meters tall, he also made a simple spiral staircase around the inside going up to a room on top to overlook the marketplace.
He planned to see if the spiders could make a spilk bridge from the tower to the tree and maybe make a couple of platforms for guards there.
He also sculpted three gates, one in the north, east, and south-facing walls, leaving only the wall facing the safe zone without a gate.
With his skill
He went around and sculpted three-sided stalls backing up against the walls with a counter in front for item displays.
To ensure that there was no flooding inside the marketplace, he made sure that there were ample channels for drainage connected to one central conduit that he can close of with
As he walked between the tree and the surrounding stalls he used
It was just after midnight when Ansi left again to go fetch the other golems since they planned to stay in the tree where they would be invisible in the leafy cover but also be nearby for support.
The next morning there was a huge commotion inside the safe zone, as the sky started to lighten up when they became aware of the structure that had caused some concern during the night to their mage who had the ability.
Louie sculpted a stage against the side of the tree and sent Whitney, Sean, and Barry to a gate each so they could show the future traders to the stage for an introduction.
Kotche took Counselor, Debbie, Jackson, and Sean to go and walk the wall to show that there was a visible protection detail to the marketplace.
One thing that Louie wasn't so sure about but reluctantly agreed upon was the idea that Celia came up with when she offered Jon to carry Danny on his back, she thought that the people might get used to seeing the spiders, but Louie thought that they would look more like some kind of Arachnia to those that played old RPG games, but Dan said they would keep her safe from people that want to start something.
It wasn't long before the first people started to arrive along the roped of paths that the spiders created, and gathered in front of the stage.
As the sun's rays started to lit up the top of the tree and the people could see the marketplace, most focused on the two tables in front of the stage where the two coffee machines were clearly visible, Louie and the rest of his traders got up on the stage to address the crowd.
Louie channeled his mana to his vocal cords and activated his

"Good morning everybody. While I make introductions, please feel free to step up to the tables and grab a free hot cup of coffee from the young ladies behind the tables. Don't mind the big golem dog laying behind them; he is a big softy and is only there to keep them company."
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
It took a while before the first person stepped forwards to collect a cup of coffee but once he did the rest followed soon, Louie explained who they were and why they were there, as well as his vision for the future.
"We are here to help you, we will not give you a handout, we will give you a hand up. We will help you to get on your feet but you will have to walk on your own, we will not carry you."
There was a lot of mumbling and the crowd was starting to get rowdy.
"There are no free rides, it's not our duty to carry you. If you are not willing to walk after we have helped you to your feet, then you can stay where you are as everybody else moves forwards. Stay living in your shack and squalor while your neighbors build their own houses, grow their own food, and make their own clothes. The choice is yours."
Louie waved his hand over the gathered crowd towards the empty stalls.
"Last night we created this marketplace, we created separate stalls for each of you where you can set up for free." They all quiet down as they heard this.
"Yes, the stalls are free but it will be first come first serve."
"Now listen up. There will be some rules here!"
"The main rule, you will not swindle somebody. No cheating, no lying, no stealing."
"The second rule, you will keep your booth neat and clean."
"There will be merchant guards that will patrol the market, so there will be no levy or protection charges in this market!"
"What the fuck! Who do you think you are to come in here and take our job away from us?"
The big guy who spoke up was livid and the way he looked and acted told Louie that he belonged to one of the small-time gangs, that Rowena talked about, that extorted the merchants for protection money on market days.
"Who am I? I am the person that will enforce the law here."
"You and what army?"
People slowly backed away and some started looking for places to hide as more of the angry man's friends joined him.
Louie cast
"I'm sure you and your men think that you are the biggest baddest men around, but I'm telling you that I will rip you and your friends apart and loot your bodies before the first one of you can lift a finger. I have heard that you guys have so far only asked for protection money and haven't done much worse so I see that this can go one of two ways. The first way is you guys join us in keeping these people safe and we will teach you how to go fight monsters, then you can do what you claimed. The second is that you can insist on trying to take what you don't deserve from these people and we will kill you all right here right now."
Louie saw the resolve waver in the guys' eyes as the fear effect ate at his nerves, and he saw the sweat start to bead on his forehead.
"First or second? Your choice."
The guy gulped as he looked over the group of armed and armored people, he softly spoke.
"First."
Louie theatrically threw his arms in the air and smiled as he loudly proclaimed, "My friend! Welcome to the marketplace, you and your brothers are welcome, please step this way."
Leon came forwards and led them towards a door set in the building next to the tower.
Louie turned back to the mass of people. "We also have our own stalls, in the form of mobile caravans in the northeastern corner. There is a stall for healers." Sher and Mainey stepped forwards. "Where every one of you will first go for a health check, also a caravan for a jeweler, tailor, and leatherworker." As their craft was called out each of them stepped forwards to introduce themselves. "There is also a blacksmith stand, and then we have a System recognized merchant with a lot of stock that she would be selling."
The people were getting rowdy again but he held up his hands. "All our stock can be bartered, but there will be prices next to each item so that you will know what it's worth. Let me just tell you that I have heard that some people are trying to claim that one Iron Bit is worth one cent, that is Bullshit. The System coins are worth much more than our previous money. With ten Bits you can buy a big bowl of stew from the system vendor."
"What's a System vendor?" Somebody shouted from the crowd.
Louie proceeded to tell them about the vendor, the stock that is sold there, and where they could find them, he also told them that there was a vendor in the Dungeon in Starter Town and that there were going to be monthly round trips between Paarl and Worcester and that they can ask for family or friends that might be in those towns from Leon who was in charge of the trading company, STC.
Leon had spent the whole of the previous night going over the list of names that they had received from the residents in Drostdy, The Fort, Starter Town, and Mountain Holm before they lost contack with ST, Drostdy and the Fort.
He also told them that there was a tavern in the southeastern corner of the market that would be run by Nickey and her family, once they moved in later the day.
"Now form a line please and follow me."
He indicated that Danny and Jon should follow him as he started walking down the row of stalls and by the time he reached the corner the potential stall owners had formed a line behind them and they followed him around the marketplace back to the first stall where he stopped.
"Good now that you all have seen the stalls . . " he stopped talking and gave the one guy that tried to move up in the line a stink eye till he moved back in line.
"You all saw that the stalls are all the same, so please follow me and each of you can claim a stall for the day, as we walk past it."
There was some grumbling but everybody settled in a stall and started packing out their wares.
It was slow going at first but more and more people entered the marketplace, even if it was just for the curiosity factor.
Louie stepped into the building next to the tower and addressed the group of men that used to extort the vendors.
He moved over next to Leon and placed his chair facing the leader.
"Who are you and why are you guys extorting protection money from these squatters?" He saw some of them squirm as he used the word extorted.
The leader, whose name turned out to be Patric, looked defeated. "We got families that we must feed," *Sigh* "There is nowhere that we can claim to hunt and gain power. Everybody else has their own sector and fighters. The militia has their members that protect the squatters from the waves, and they are only taking in teens at the moment. We are not really fighters, we know each other mostly from doing construction work. A friend asked a couple of us to protect him while he set up a stall, and I guess that things just got out of hand."
"So you want to fight?"
Patric shook his head, "No, but we want to feed our families, and killing monsters gives you meat to feed the family, and you get a couple of coins, even if it's worth shit."
Louie shook his head. "That shit again. How many coins do you get from a kill?"
Patric scratched his head, "Well from a Rat kill you get 30 Iron Bits, the skin, a kilo of meat, and some teeth or claws, if you are lucky then you get both teeth and claws."
The guys all nodded, "like I said the coin is crap but the meat is what we are after, that's why the other groups don't like it if you come to hunt on their turf, and you do not want to go far from your shelter, not to mention past the outskirts of town."
Louie took one of the vendors bought bowls of stew out of his bracelet. "How much do you think this bowl of stew is sold for by the System?"
"The System sells stuff? Where can we buy from the System?" Somebody shouted.
Louie held up his hand. "Wait with your questions. . . How much?"
He shrugged. "I don't know. . . . fifty of those bronze coins?"
Louie shook his head, "Fifty of those Bronze coins are five Silver coins, but you can buy a bowl of stew like this for ten Bits from the System vendor."
"What!" Everybody was on their feet and shouting.
Louie sat back in his chair as he studied Patric's face who shouted for everybody to shut the fuck up before turning back to Louie who nodded. "For killing one rat you can buy three bowls of stew from the System and you still get to keep the rest of the loot."
Patric saw Louie looking at him while he waved his guys back to their seats. "What do you want, why are you telling us this?"
Louie leaned forwards. "Come work for us, be guards here at the marketplace and the other place I intend to build, you and your dependents will receive safe housing, medical and other benefits, three meals a day, and training in any craft as well as fighting monsters. We can work out a wage system once we have settled in a bit."
"Safe housing? How are you going to do that, not even inside the safe zone can they guarantee that. Ow, they say it's a safe zone but I hear differently."
Louie nodded, "There are ways to do that within the System and we will do that later, for now, we have means to guard our residential area against random spawn. Let me show you."
Louie made sure that he had all their attention. "DO. NOT. MOVE."
Slowly he lessened the mana to the
They freaked out and he saw that they were close to fleeing. "LISTEN! She will not harm you, she is a bonded companion to our druid."
When he was sure he had all their attention, "You have seen the big metal dog, and the big spider on the stage, the one that the girl was riding? Those and more are our pets and companions, they will ensure that our residential areas are kept safe during the days and nights." Louie laid his hand on Ansi's carapace. "This is Ansi, she is a Queen golem spider and as I said, she is a companion to our Druid."
Patric nervously looked at Anssi while he addressed Louie. "So, you are all magic users?"
"Where did you think this marketplace came from? It wasn't here yesterday." Louie wanted to know from Patric.
He shrugged, "We thought it was a gift from the system, stranger things have happened, hell you get coins from killing an animal, what the hell is an animal doing with coins, and looting, how does that work."
Louie shrugged, he thought of telling him about Gaea and the way she set up the system but decided on leaving that for later.
"Ja, there is some strange stuff out there. And no, it wasn't a gift from the system, I sculpted the marketplace during the night, so it's mine."
"You are all mages?" He asked again.
Louie looked him in the eye, "Nope, we are fighters that know a bit of magic, or mana, and how to manipulate it. We have one person with us who the system classified as a water mage."
He held out his hand and cast
"One of the things we can teach you is how to manipulate mana, so you will be a better fighter, but only if you swear an oath and work for us will you get all the benefits."
They huddled up as far away from Ansi as possible to discuss the offer but in the end, they all agreed and took the oath.
Oath
I do swear that I will serve our community as a guard officer without favor or affection, malice, or ill-will. I will enforce the peace by protecting those that need protection from those that want to oppress them. I will serve to better myself and those around me, and I will do this to the best of my abilities.
After the Oath Leon took the new guards and their Sargeant, Patric, and divided the twenty-three of them into three shifts, the first to start immediately, while Louie went out and sculpted some living quarters for them and their families inside the back wall behind the tavern.
Celia had made a couple of big posters explaining the System exchange rates and had it posted all through the marketplace after they had given the new guards a vendor tablet each, and instructions on how to use it.

The rest of the day passed without any big emergencies.
The gate to the safe zone was still closed, but from the wall and the room on the tower they could see over the walls into the zone, and the guards in there didn't look very happy.
Later that evening when Louie looked at his Status sheet he noticed that his skills now show which skills are active and which are passive.
