It’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving and Jade and Jasper are at the Vega house. They’re watching football with David.
“So these people can hit each other and not get in trouble?” Jade asks.
“Yeah.” Jasper says.
“They don’t get in trouble unless they get hit a certain way.” David says.
Just then, a player tackles the quarterback and the offensive line starts to gang up on the guy who tackled their quarterback and now there’s a massive brawl because the defensive line fights back. Referees are throwing flags and some players got ejected.
“If you want to watch a sport where they let them fight, there’s hockey.” David flips the channel to a hockey game. Someone just got checked and now there’s a fight.
“And they don’t get in trouble for this?”
“In hockey, they let them fight. After they‘re done fighting, they have to go to the penalty box for a timeout. They allow them to come back after. Ejections are rare these days. You’d like boxing where they beat each other up.” He flips the channel to boxing. Someone gets knocked out. “Then there’s basketball.” He changes the channel to a basketball game. A fight breaks out. “That’s not supposed to happen. Now here, they get in trouble." He changes the channel again. "And there’s baseball. Here are some highlights from last season.” Coincidentally, a batter is seen charging the mound after getting hit by a pitch. The other players leave the dugout and get in a brawl. “I’m sorry about all of this violence going on.”
“No. Thank you for showing me this. So you're saying sports are essentially forms of legal violence?”
“Unless there’s golf or tennis.” He changes the channel to a tennis match. “Those guys you saw fighting will get fined. Some will be suspended for some games, but they’ll play again. No fighting here.”
“It happens a lot, Jade.” Jasper says.
Tori and Trina come downstairs.
“Watching sports with my dad?” Tori hugs Jade from behind.
“Sports, legal violence, whatever it is, it’s fun! Look!”
“Tori, help me in the kitchen.”
“Coming, Mom.”
“Are your friends coming over for Thanksgiving?”
“Jade and Jasper for sure. Maybe their parents. I don’t know about anyone else.”
“I’m going to cook more to prepare in case. How does this taste?”
Tori tries Holly’s food. “It’s good! When did you learn to cook better? When did you learn to cook in general?”

If that’s all it took to get Mom to cook, I would’ve dated Jade sooner.
“Wait. Girls play basketball too?” Jade asks as the channels are being flipped.
“Girls can play any sport.” David says.
“If only I were more athletic or if Tori played sports. Aw! The football game is over. I was just enjoying it.”
Jade flips the channels and sees a beach volleyball game and stops talking.
“Those girls making you feel good? I’m right here, Jade.”
“We’d look hot in those outfits!”
“Better.”
“There’s another football game on soon.” Jasper says.

“Hey Trina, maybe you need a girlfriend.” Holly says as a joke.

“Tori and I clashed a few nights ago.”

After the game ends, it’s 4 PM.

“There’s another football game on tonight.” David says.

“The game’s starting!” David says.
Kickoff starts and people get tackled. Jade stares at the television again.

“Does anyone want snacks?” Holly places a bowl of chips on the table and they eat while watching. Jade sees a cheerleader and stares again.

“Dinner will be ready soon.”

Holly rolls her eyes. “I know your dad wanted a boy, but he’s ruining my moment. I should have that attention!”
“You’re doing fine, Mom.” Trina says.
“It’s done!” Holly says.
Everyone goes to the kitchen to get food. Then, they immediately go back to the living room to eat.
“Oh. Right. Thank you, Holly.”
“Thank you, Mom.” Everyone else says.
Jasper walks up to Holly.
“We promise we won’t cry this time.” He hugs her.
“But I might. You’re so kind!” She says.
A few hours pass and the game ends.
“That was a good game!” David says.
“Do we leave now, Jade?”
“A few more minutes. I want to spend a little more time cuddling with Tori.” Tori and Jade smile at each other and kiss.

They go into Tori’s room.

“My image is on the line, David! Plus, If Jade and Jasper come with their parents, I need Roy to feel bad. Someone start peeling potatoes and opening cans and bags.”

Hours pass and they finally finish cooking.

“Holly, you had us up early in the morning.”

“I need to look good and this will make me feel better about not being a good mom before Jade and Jasper had that sleepover here.”
“I'm going out.” Tori says
“Why?” Trina asks.

The doorbell rings again.

“Yeah. What was that about?” Naomi asks.
“I think she’s just nervous.” Jasper says.
“She’s feeling something.” Jade says. Sonya laughs.
Tori comes back with food and Jade holds her again.
“Nervous?”

“It just means I’m doing a good job.”
“What was your favorite part of the parade?” Cat asks the kids.
“We’re in middle school. This isn’t a kids’ show. Why are you talking like that?” Jasper asks.
Cat starts to frown.
“I liked the balloons.” Rachel says.
“I liked the singing.” Naomi says.
“Please say something nice to Cat.” Jade says to Jasper.
“I liked seeing some of the costumes.” He says.
Cat claps.
“She’ll probably be a preschool show host in the future.” Sonya says.
“Hey Beck, is there football in Canada?” Cat asks.
“Canadian! So Trina likes exotic men?” Sonya asks.
“Yes.” Beck says.
“Which question were you answering?” Robbie says.
“The football one.”
Everyone screams because something happened in the game.
“That’s too violent!” Cat says.
“I hope I see blood!” Jade says.
Robbie tries to comfort Cat. “It’s just a tackle, Cat.”
Someone gets injured on the next play.
“But that wasn’t.” She says.
“Let’s get more food. Maybe that’ll cheer you up.”
At some point the game ends.
“Yay. It’s over! My favorite part was the halftime show!” Cat says.

“It’s okay, Jade. There’s another game. I’ll change it.” David switches to the next game.

“At least there will be another halftime performance. You liked the first one, Cat.” Jasper says.

“He should’ve been our son.” Holly says out loud.
Ruby and Sapphire turn their heads towards Holly.

The two women nod.

Sonya then looks at Robbie.

“They’re basically children and they’re cute in some sort of way.” Jade says.
“It is cute.” Sonya says.
“They act like kids and their love is pure.” Tori says.

“He’s not. He just needed a girlfriend and he needed to get rid of Rex.” Cat says
“Rex?” Sonya asks.
“The male half of that weird couple has a puppet named Rex.” Jade says
“Tori, Trina, Is everyone at your performing arts school weird?”
“We have … unique people.” Trina says.
“Everyone there has a talent.” Tori says.
“Everyone?” Jade asks.

Just then, someone gets hit.

“I think she just described a good night.” Sonya and Holly say.

That game ends and then David changes the channel to the third game.
“Three blood sports in a row‽” Jade says.
“They have three games every Thanksgiving.” David says.
“It’s nice seeing Jade happy for once.” Roy says.
“Yeah. Don’t ruin it, Dad. You’re lucky I love Tori.”
“Hey everyone, let’s talk about what we’re thankful for.” Holly says.
“Food, family, friends, and football.” Everyone says.
“Good enough.”
“Hey, Cat, does this count as a meat date?” Robbie asks.
Jade and Jasper laugh. “Meat date.” They say.
“Sure!”
“Jade, did you corrupt him?”
“I didn’t yet, Tori.”
“That just sounded funny.”
“He only knows some of the bad words from his friends, but he doesn’t know how to use them correctly. I’m corrupting him on his birthday.”
The game ends and everyone starts to leave.
“Thank you all for coming! Thanks for telling me my food is great!” Holly says.
“Thank you for inviting us.” Roy says.
“No problem.” David says. He shakes Roy’s hand and then Steven’s hand. Holly hugs Ruby and Sapphire.
“I’ll see you again, Beck!” Trina kisses him on the cheek.
Beck hesitates. “I will not feel grossed out about that.” He waves at everyone and leaves.
“Too fast?” Trina asks.
“He doesn’t hate it, but yeah.” Jade says.
“Thank you for having us! We're leaving!” Cat says.
Tori and Jade walk out and hug and kiss for five seconds. Jasper hugs everyone else and leaves.
“Bye, Mom! Bye, Dad! Oh, I mean Mr. and Mrs. Vega!”
“No, go ahead and call us your parents, son.” Holly says.
“Bye, Tori and Trina’s Aunt! Bye, Tori! Bye, Trina!”
“I’m out. Tori, you have a good one. Trina, use my advice.” Sonya leaves.
“And now we take out the trash.” Holly says.
