Days of Exile

"Good morning," I joyfully yell at the middle-aged woman. She replies with an equally delighted. "Good morning."

I skip my way back to my house as I look around this little village. The days spent in the cities now a distant memory,

My smile falters, reminded me of the mistakes I made to end up here. Some people would console me because I was only human, and everyone makes mistakes.

But the mistakes I made can not and should not be forgiven. After all, which child could say they killed their parents with grief.

The thought fills me with depression, and I sigh as I look up to see the beautiful rising sun. Though perhaps my wife will be in a better mood.

Her inability to adjust, perhaps born from our formerly luxurious lifestyle. Has knocked on her nerves. Despite her continued anger and outrage, we both knew there was nothing we can do.

I slouch and sigh deeper. How did I get here? Perhaps, betting your family fortune, in a dumb gamble, was one. Then bringing dishonor in our family, from slave trading to regain the lost money.

All of it done at her insistence, I shake my head, holding unto my face. I shouldn't put all the blame on her shoulders.

I was the one who chose this path, and I am deserving to walk on it. To at least preserve the shred of dignity and honor I had left.

I stop in front of my house, a bit decrepit, but I'm not exactly one that has the right to do so. I shake my head, hoping for Abigail's good mood.

I open the door to see nothing, a house with her gone and food left uneaten. Maybe she already left, unable to live in this kind of condition.

I sat at the chair watching the uneaten food I left her, as I feel the burning in my eyes. I shake the tears away and tried to look on the bright side, despite its apparent effect upon me.

I sat there for what felt like hours, knowing that the last reminder of my life was Timothy Caedebrad. Now gone as the life, I've once lived.

A few months pass, I lived life as simple as I can. I didn't need to check the money our family left us. Knowing she wouldn't have gone out this long without our money.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

I go out once again, to work and eat. To be in awe of the beautiful sunrise along with the singing forest, an excellent view for the morning.

The Frankish countryside just the same as any countryside, perhaps with more tax. I grumble, "a lot more tax." I shake my head and let's just hope the war doesn't reach this place.

I stand now looking outwards the beautiful farm, a field filled with growing tomatoes, a beautiful scenery, the delicious scent enter the senses. The soil a soft texture, a great feeling between my feet, and warm sun embracing me in its light, making me sigh in content.

A few hours pass, I watch my fieldwork done for the day, making me smile proudly, happy with the work I've finished. Sure this labor might be backbreaking, but hard work did have the effect of pushing back bad memories.

I nod to myself as the warm sun is now scorching. I look up to see the time as afternoon. I walk back to my home to relax after a day of laborious work.

I open the door to see Abigail, her flowing blonde hair and deep blue eyes, waiting for me in a beautiful dress, something I'm sure we didn't have the money to buy.

But the sight of her alone drags beautiful memories of our loves. The promises we made to each other. And unfortunately, the memories of the hell she dragged me into. How did it get to this?

She smiles at me with excitement as she hugs me. I stand in shock. Perhaps her journey has changed something in her. I hug her back with the same intensity.

She pushes me and looked me in the eyes as she excitedly spoke. "I've found a way so we can go back and reclaim Caehal."

I stood in shock at her revelation, and I shake my head at her in disappointment. "And bring more shame unto ourselves? Haven't we done enough?"

She looks at me angrily. "What have we done? That was your right! It was your inheritance" She clenches her fist. "It was only right for us to spend it."

I sigh deeper. "How about the trading then? The clear violation of the law?" I shout at her, "Just ACCEPT IT! Abigail, we did wrong, and now it's our turn to pay for it." I look at her expressionless face

I hug her deeply. "Just please, I beg you stay here with me, we can build a new life here." Her face expressionless asked once again now in a tone of neutrality. "Is that really what you want?" I hug her deeper, burying my face on her neck. "Yes, let's just live here," I whisper at her in hope, "together."

"How unfortunate, this could have been so much easier" A voice speaks behind me, a metal stick pointed at me. Abigail, whose expression now filled with disdain, pushed me away and spoke with contempt.

"Then stay here, peasant."

A few loud bangs fill my ears as a thunderous pain echoes throughout my back. My eyes are swelling with tears as I kneel, holding onto my bleeding chest. My vision of her beautiful face now fills me with nothing but grief.

But as I die, I look out the window watching the beautiful afternoon sky, imagining myself of the time when things were simple, as my family and I spent together in the bright afternoon sky. I can only hope that the next time we meet, they'll be willing to forgive me.

I see my vision darken. With the last of my breath, I whisper

"I'm sorry."
