hapter 16: Putting the Hell in Hello

"Spirit. Doctor Amagai sent me to find you and bring you to him. Please come with me." Xandria spoke in an empty tone her purple eyes showing not a single bit of emotion. Those weren't the words she expected to hear. Especially from a sickle wielding psychopath who looked at him with an empty yet innocent gaze in her eyes.

The figure on the other hand wasn't too innocent as he rushed in their direction. "Get away from her she's gonna kill you!" The man roared running at Spirit faster than anything he had seen before.

"Wait wait wait wait wait. She knows my dad!" Spirit spoke in English hurriedly waving his hands to stop the man who rushed at him.

Pausing in confusion the man tilted his head to the side. "Wait. You can understand me?"

"Yeah, my father taught me English. Why're you two fighting. Wait she's bleeding! We need to help her!" Spirit yelled in shock noticing her gun wounds and slash wounds.

"She doesn't need help, she is-" Before the man could finish the sentence the horde that had been chasing after Spirit busted through the doors of the church earning the attention of the two, and the exhausted spirit.

"Oh no...we made too much noise." Spirit muttered as the horde continued inside the building. Feeling dread pulse through his body, the sheer number of them was almost unbelievable. Was this really the full amount of them that he had following him?

For the first time. Both Xandria and the hunter glanced at each other in a moment of mutual understanding. Protect the target.

"Kid, go hide in the confessional. Under no circumstances are you to walk out of it, no matter what you hear, no matter how you feel." The masked man spoke readying both his guns, whilst Xandria readied her dual sickles. "This will only take a moment."

"But what abou-" Before he could finish uttering those words. Xandria grabbed him by the collar dragging him to the confessional, throwing him inside before closing the door.

"Don't come out until after we are finished." Xandria spoke still only understood by Spirit.

Leaving him sitting inside, now throbbing from even more pain as a result of being thrown by a girl who was in fact a whole lot stronger than she looked. It was a surprise he didn't fly through the wooden box, or through the wall with how hard he was thrown.

Over the course of the next couple of minutes, all Spirit could hear the sounds of footsteps, sounds of slices and the grotesque sounds of flesh being severed. Feeling his stomach beginning to churn just from the sounds alone. It felt almost as if her were truly living within a horror movie, or maybe it truly was a bad dream?

Shaking his head as the dream thought popped into his head one more time. He knew deep down below that it wasn't a dream, the amount of near death experiences he had gone through in just the last couple of hours alone was enough to know that it wasn't.

For the human brain over thousands of years of evolution, had evolved to prevent the body from doing anything that would willingly endanger it. By releasing chemicals throughout the body, the chemicals that cause fear, despair, sadness and many other feelings that'd force the conscious mind to take a moment to think. There are many who can push past those feelings and do great feats. Whether it be deescalating a heist as a bank guard. Pushing the front line as a solider who is destined to die, yet still proceeds to fight knowing that. Or finally like a Samurai fighting with all of his honor not allowed to fear their own coming demise.

Those two individuals fighting the horde in a losing battle were definitely closer to the Samurai than they were to anything else. Fighting because they weren't allowed to back down. Being stuck within that confessional, he truly didn't know whether or not he was going to walk out of there alive.

Up until Xandria opened the door of the confessional again staring at him with her emotionless purple eyes. What horrified him even more in that moment, was the fact she was covered head to toe in blood.

Staring in shock Spirit didn't know what to say, or even what to do besides sitting there attempting to process everything that he was witnessing. Slowly he peeked his head out from the confessional booth his eyes widening at the sight before him.

The countless bodies of the horde that had been chasing him not that long ago, were all littering the floor their heads completely severed their blood pooling. Staining the marble floor of the church. There were easily hundreds of bodies that had been stripped of their life.

Either out of shock, or out of exhaustion. All of the events he had been going through it was far too much for his body and mind to deal with. As a result he fell out of the booth, his eyes rolling to the back of his head. His body finally giving into the exhaustion he felt due to his shock. Passing out from all of it only to be caught by Xandria who simply opened her mouth into the shape of an O. Before glancing to the man askance, truly unsure of what to do in this moment.

The man wasn't really sure how to really react to this situation, he had never been in a situation like this. Where he and an infected were both tasked with the same job. To bring the kid to safety, without letting him getting bit or killed.

For him there was a major payday connected to him succeeding, and from what he could tell. This infected was given the same task. By somebody named Doctor Amagai, he definitely needed to find out the source of her request. But it also begged to question. Who gave him his mission?
