'Life sure is interesting', that's the first thing that came to Grey's mind after he arrived in this world. Who would've thought that there are more beautiful things other than slaying demons, like... planting trees.
"Hmm, hmm, hmmmm..." Jurgen hummed softly as he dug a hole from the soil.
On the meantime, Grey and Reynold are also doing their thing on the other side.
'Damn, he looks so contented.' Grey whispered in his thought, constantly glancing at the old man as he carry a pot that contains a tree in it. He then dropped it near Reynold causing the pot to break.
"Alright..." Reynold stood up to pick up the tree from the broken pot and buried it's roots on the hole that he himself dug. "This should do it." He uttered with a contented smile. "Little Grey, can you carry the small pots and keep breaking them? There are more hole on the ground than I expected." He politely requested, pointing at the nearby stockpile of planting pots.
After hearing this, Grey guiltily smiled at him. 'Well I'm the one at fault after using earth magic to dug those holes.' He thought before following his uncle's request.
"Oh, right uncle... I've been wondering, what type of mark do you use?" Grey curiously asked his uncle, breaking another pot in front of him.
"Ohh, I'm a berserker." Reynold proudly replied, pulling his shirt's collar to reveal his red-colored spirit mark. "I'm an A-rank dual-elemental berserker possessing wind and fire." He added before hiding back his mark and continuing to plant trees.
"You can also use wind magic just like me, mom and gramps?" Grey eagerly asked, breaking another pot.
"Well yeah, I guess magic are kind of related with bloodline and relationship." He replied, burying another tree root on the hole.
'That's new, so that's why I'm so compatible with wind and fire, because of mom and dad's attribute.' Grey wondered, walking back to the pile of tree pots and grabbing another one. 'If that's the case, the how did I manage to learn other attributes? I can't help but guess that magical elements are kind of also related to mana amount and frequency.' He concluded after breaking another pot and collapsed on his butt.
"Are you alright?" Reynold worriedly asked. "You should take some rest." He suggested, turning his head behind him and said, "We're almost finished."
"Yeah, I guess.... But I've been meaning to ask..." Grey spoke between pants, "... Why are we planting trees around this place." He asked, looking around him, he can see multiple grown up trees with their roots popping out of the ground. This got him wondering, 'What's the use of planting this trees?'
"Ahhh, well..." Reynold said and paused to look at Grey. "When you first arrive here, did you see any monsters around this area?" He said, pointing at the village.
Grey shook his head in response, 'That's right, when I first arrive here, It got me wondering why monsters doesn't approach this place despite being near the forest and a mountain.' He thought, watching over the forest near the edge of the village.
"At first I thought it's because of the guild protecting this village but... is there perhaps another reason?" Grey curiously asked.
Reynold quickly pointed at the giant tree in front of him and then at the tree that he just planted. "This trees are called Boundarian trees. If you already try hunting monsters in the Viridian forest then perhaps there is a chance that you've encounter some of this trees." He stated, looking at the young man and expecting for a response.
"Now that I think about it..." Grey pondered, his thumb is on his chin, "... I've seen grown up trees like this once I entered the boundary between Viridian and the bamboo forest where I usually train." He answered, remembering the exact location where he saw this towering trees.
"And did you ever wondered why those trees exist near residential areas like your house and the Hotstone village?" Reynold asked another intriguing question, causing Grey to curiously look at him.
"I've never thought of that, but now that you've brought it up, I'm already wondering." Grey stated, narrowing his curious gaze.
Reynold teased the young man by silencing himself for a moment causing Grey to eagerly grit his teeth. The silence lasted for a moment before the kind-looking uncle contentedly smiled at him and said, "The answer is simple, this trees aren't called Boundarian for no reason." He stated, touching the leaves of the tree that he planted, rubbing its surface. "This trees have roots that moves once it sense monsters nearby. This can drive away monsters and help set boundaries between humans and magical beasts." He explained and looked at Grey.
"Ehh, it can move?" Grey hastily backed off away from the trees.
This caused Reynold to chuckle, "Don't worry, this plants are meant to protect humans and not to cause any harm on them." He said with kind gaze, rubbing the leaves of the Boundarian plant.
This statement simply gave Grey the answer that instantly satisfied him. "I see, so that's why you're planting masses of this thing." He commented before slightly giggling.
If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"Yeah, although it can't drive away stronger monsters, it can atleast help watch over the village when the guild members are away on a raid." The kind uncle proudly stated with his benevolent voice. " Also, the queen will be happy if she sees this."
His optimism caused Grey to grin in relief, 'Well... living in this world is really interesting. I get to meet interesting people and learn interesting things that I always longed for when I was stuck with that heroic duty.' The thought wrote a smile on his young face as he looked at the clear blue sky with his calm comforting gaze. "This place is really that important huh?" He queried, smiling from his ridiculous question.
Reynold rubbed his head."This place is the capital of all weapons used for battles, whether the guilds or the kingdom, if this place will fall the entire continent will be plunged into chaos." He explained.
Grey stood and said, "So that means the guild also–"
"Hey, great craftsman Reynold!"
Before Grey could even finish speaking, a man with a load croaky voice suddenly screamed from behind them, causing both of them to stop the conversation and turn their heads.
The first person that came to Grey's view was a tall and bulky short-haired man carrying a tons of things on his back. Secondly, he saw four other people: two gorgeous woman; one was a blonde and the other was red haired, and two violent -looking man; one was a red-haired muscular man; and the other was a frail-looking brown haired man, walking behind the man who came first, all carrying a massive backpack.
Looking at them, Grey wondered, 'Who are these guys?' He curiously looked at each of them with his sharp glances.
'The bulky guy have his spirit mark on his right wrist, he's definitely a berserker; the two woman are wearing long combat sleeves so their marks are not exposed, but their physical body are not that tough-looking to be a berserker so they're definitely a mage type.' The young wizard concluded before leaning his head to the left to take a closer look at the people behind the man.
'The other two guys behind the bulky one got their marks unexposed as well huh, but they look so violent so they're definitely a berserker.' Grey analyzed and made a conclusion in just one glance, leaving more questions in his mind after looking at each of them. 'They're all look so strong though.' He curiously tilted his head before Reynold suddenly stood up, causing him to interestingly followed him with his large eyes.
"Ohh it's you Jagger." Reynold casually greeted the bulky individual. "Did you come to pick some weapons?" He asked.
"Well, yeah." The bulky guy named Jagger who's known to be the guildmaster surprisingly spoke in a soft low-pitched voice, not similar to that croaky call that they heard earlier.
Grey wondered for about a second before one of the violent-looking man behind Jagger, the one with black hair, casually approached Reynold and gave him a fist bump. "It's nice to see you, great craftsman Reynold!" The man let out the recognizable scream.
'So it was him after all.' Grey awkwardly smiled as he scratched his chin, avoiding any eyes contact with the guests.
"Nice to see you too, Ryner..." Reynold greeted them with a warm smile, looking at the other people behind them. "... you too Mira, Rose, and... Bernard... It's nice to see that the members of the Wild beast guild are here." He also greeted, slightly bowing his head.
"Stop the formality." Jagger politely shook his head.
'So their from the guild huh?' Grey thought, approaching behind Reynold. "Uncle who are this people?" He pretended not to know them to start a conversation.
Ryner intriguingly looked at Grey with his eyes slightly closed. He blinked a few times and looked back at Reynold."Hmm... who's this brat great craftsman Reynold?!" He roughly asked, he almost sounded screaming. "Is he your new servant?" He curiously asked before he sensed a familiar presence behind him. He knew what's coming, but it was too late, a hard staff already landed behind his back causing him to arch his body in pain.
"How kind of you to call my grandson a servant, Ryner Huxley." The elderly Jurgen appeared behind Ryner with a murderous smile staring at him.
Ryner looked back at him with terrified smile before dropping on his knees and bowed his head multiple times while saying, "I'm sorry great master Jurgen Grandfield." He was pleading on his knees as his comrades looked at him pitifully.
'Great master?' Grey astonishingly looked at the man on his knees. "That guy is gramps' disciple?" He asked, looking at Reynold.
Reynold kept his silence and nodded his response as he stared back at Ryner who's still pleading on his knees.
"I'm really sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." Ryner repeatedly said between each bow, causing Jurgen to have an even more annoyed expression.
"Do that for a hundred times as a punishment for insulting my grandson." The stubborn old man stated.
"Ye–Wait, did you just said that that young man is your grandson?" Ryner came into realization and looked at the young fellow and then right back at Jurgen.
"That's right– wait, you didn't know?" Jurgen confusedly looked at his pitiful disciple, leaning his head towards him with narrowed eyes.
"Of course I don't know, otherwise I would've greeted him fancily." He reasonably explained with his open hands pointing at Grey with a smile of respect.
After hearing the man's reasoning, Grey have no choice but to butt in. "His words seems reasonable, can you forgive him gramps?...pleaaaase." Grey pleaded with puppy eyes.
'Gramps?' Jurgen was left speechless for the moment. That was his first time hearing his precious grandson call him that. So, he quickly regained his composure, "Ahem..." He cleared his throat and said, "well, since my little grandson requested it, who am I to decline?"
The old master's statement caused his violent-looking disciple to jump in happiness, "Alright!" He blissfully screamed. "Thank you so much, young great master Grey." Ryner thanked the young fellow with his head on the ground.
"You don't have to mention– you know my name?" Grey politely asked, giving him a hand.
"Of course, you're sir Edward's son so I can't just forget your name, but I've only heard stories about you and I did not expect you to be such a grown up child." Ryner truthfully replied, rubbing his head as Grey helped him to slowly stand up from the ground.
'Sir huh?... I guess my dad is really respected even by the guild.' Grey thought, unconsciously grinning before he realized that his mom and dad are no where to be seen. "Ahh.. by the way gramps, where did mom and dad go?" He asked Jurgen.
"They came to fetch some clean water from the well." Jurgen bluntly answered, pointing his finger at the other side of the village.
"I see," Grey uttered. 'From the way he point his finger I think they've gone far away from here.' He sighed before he continued to observe them.
"Ahh by the way, great craftsman Reynold, did you managed to sharpen the blade of my excalibur?" Ryner comically blurted out with his rough almost-screaming voice. The ridiculous name caused Grey to wonder what type of weapon they're talking about.
"Well...." Reynold suspended his statement, throwing everyone in confusion, causing them to look at each other.
