Chapter 31

This science homework was beating my ass.

Aside from that, everything was going great.

It's been nearly a week since the 'Vermillion Warehouse Raid' as the news is calling it and I finally was finished with most of my schoolwork that I needed to complete before my midterms, mainly because of Ralts' wonderful appreciation for studying and being a super study buddy that finally could say a word or two into my head through telepathy since her training has been a bit less taxing since we've been trying to go into different directions.

Speaking of training, in chronological order:

Chardon was currently trying to learn Dragon Breath as he was improving his use of Beat Up. The problem with Chardon's Beat Up was that he was having trouble imagining the Pokemon he would try to copy for his shadow clones so I had the brilliant idea to have a picture of one or two in front of him while he would use the dark type move to really get the details and distinctions in. My plan worked and now the fire type can do at least two clones of different members of the team before the rest start destabilizing.

Leaf was still having hang ups with Splash Dash so instead I asked her to try and learn Leech Seed with some videos from Ellian and James showing their Gloom and Ivysaur respectively try and explain how they use the move. Having some longevity will help Leaf stay a monster and make sure she doesn't run out of energy like the fight against Surge. We were finding half decent success on both endeavors.

Tabitha was helping Beedrill learn how to use Toxic Spikes, and the added practice of poison type energy would help her later learn how to use Toxic, while she focused on her trick where she would use Rollout or a rolling move to attack and then Reflect to change the direction of her movement or block the opponent from dodging. We still needed a way to learn Curse and I was of the opinion that we should definitely get a one-time TM for her, but she convinced me that I should get a multi-use because we might need it for another person.

Ralts has been focusing on learning Hypnosis and actually coordinating with me during battles by trying to speak to me through telepathy. Sure, it didn't really boost her battling capabilities but this was a break period for her since I wouldn't be using her for the next two gym battles so she could rest a bit easier. Also, she managed to use Thunder Wave but we're currently putting it on the wayside since Thunder Wave was explicitly learnt so that we could progress into Thunder Shock and then Thunderbolt.

Beedrill, as previously stated, is working to learn Toxic Spikes right now alongside Poison Jab which is finally making some progress thanks to him and his efforts with poison type energy. He also has to learn how to use Giga Drain since a little bit of extra survivability never hurt anyone, though it's been borderline impossible for the bug type even with Ellian's Gloom giving advice and examples through videos.

Lupa has been learning how to use his new Rock Tomb move with Woody because I somehow read Rock Tomb as Rock Polish. For some reason a lot of the team gave their bowls over to Lupa who absolutely gorged himself for the past few days. We still haven't decided which form he wants since neither really feels right so the rock type has been learning Stomping Tantrum from Woody and Iron Defense from Pearl while we mull over the pros and cons.

Woody has been an absolute trooper with the way he lets me know how Mimic works and the two of us have been focused on learning a move through solely using Mimic, it was why I was having a bit of a move learning craze right now. All the research papers and junk that Ralts and I have been sifting through have basically nothing on the normal type move but there was a neat paper that said Pokemon who used Copycat on moves that they would later learn had found it a little easier than those that didn't know Copycat. I've already emailed a Professor in Alola about Mimic and the struggle that Lupa and I have had trying pick what form to choose so hopefully he'll write back soon.

Dee-Dee was just happy with making sure the rest of the team didn't faint from exhaustion. She emphasized this fact by always carrying around a lemonade with those umbrella thingies inside and a straw she would intentionally slurp really noisily out of to get a rise out of Chardon specifically, she always succeeded. And if I saw her sneakily use a little Heal Pulse to soothe the team then it wasn't really my problem.

Marshmallow had his first official battle, and he did brilliantly with Bulldoze, Tail Whip and Power-Up Punch. Now he's learning how to use Water Gun from Pearl and then we might take it up a notch with some extra moves on my list.

Speaking of Pearl, the reason she wasn't in the list is because she's right now taking mandatory break.

"Why?" one might ask.

Well...

----------------------------------------

Evandros was patiently waiting in the lobby with Mawile and Dee-Dee after the first day of having his entire team.

He wouldn't say how glad he was that he finally had everybody, but it didn't really take an emotion reader to know how he constantly buzzes with joy every time he sent them all out.

Right now, the entire team needed a checkup since Tabitha accidently fired too many Toxic Spikes onto the field and his entire team that was practicing were all hit by the status move. Thankfully, he had immediately returned them all and had Dee-Dee deal with the spikes on the field.

Armed with a newfound knowledge of what happens when someone spooks the dear bug type, Evandros was planning on chewing out Pearl for her little prank during training time; something he had expressly explained she was not allowed to do.

A chime on his pokedex alerted him to go to the front desk to receive his team, which he dutifully did.

"Thank you, Nurse Joy" he automatically said

"You're welcome, it's always a pleasure to see a dutiful trainer care for their team. Though I think you might want to stick around a little."

Evandros blinked in surprise "Uh, okay."

"Now I believe there is something you need to discuss with one of your Pokemon." Nurse Joy took a deep breath before beginning her explanation "It appears that Pearl has a Deep Sea Scale in her shell." Nurse Joy could see the nickname registered to the Pokemon so she called them their nickname after the first couple times Evandros had met her.

"Yeah, we pretty much decided that she'll evolve into a Gorebyss for a while now. Now we're just gonna ask a friend if they're fine with trading to evolve her."

"Well, once you do evolve her then it would be highly recommended that she does not battle for at least two to three weeks."

"Wait, why?"

"You see, some Pokemon upon evolution experience massive changes to their physical form beyond simply becoming bigger and stronger. Charizards need time to acclimate to having wings, Lombre need time to become bipedal, and Pokemon like Milotic need time to be able to fully use their battling potential to move around in both water and land. Once your Clamperl evolves it would be highly recommended that she doesn't battle until she unlearns her previous battling habits and learns new ones instead."

Mentally, Evandros compared this to how once a person learns a tank then they need to shed all those skills based on attracting enemy fire when they switch to a jungler or healer. Outwardly, he nodded to the explanation.

"Oh, that makes a lot of sense actually. Thanks Nurse Joy."

"It's my pleasure, by the way if you really do wish to trade to evolve her than I can be your trading partner. Trainers worried that someone might steal their evolved Pokemon after trading usually ask for this, so the Pokemon League helped create this option."

"Really," Evandros said excitedly "thanks. You don't know how much of a hassle you just saved us."

----------------------------------------

What greeted me after the trade was a pink and serpentine-like creature wiggling around on the ground with her new semi levitation ability she gained on evolution. She has a long, thin mouth and a purple fin on both her head and her tail with a thin pink fin underneath her head. With purple shells on her body, Pearl had evolved into a Gorebyss.

And she keeps hitting her head on the floor every time she tries to turn.

Just like Nurse Joy said, Pearl's new body was causing her major problems in the control department since she couldn't move the way she regularly did. So, my training program for her is to get used to the way her body moves and to complete the obstacle course I made with rope and cones without bumping into anything, then we would head over to a park pond, and she would swim around in it doing tight turns and certain routes she has to take. She's failed so far but she's only been evolved for a couple of days.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

Speaking of evolution, her stats had increased by quite a bit.

Name Clamperl Type Water Ability Swift Swim Nature Docile HP 55 Attack 84 Sp. Attack 114 Defence 105 Sp. Defence 75 Speed 52 Total Stats 485 Moves Clamp, Water Gun, Confuse Ray, Rest, Sleep Talk, Rapid Spin, Confuse Ray, Iron Defense, Rain Dance, Shell Smash, Brine, Confusion

She managed to learn Confusion upon evolution and her total stats increased by a whopping 140. Her moves still functioned the same even if she couldn't really aim her attacks properly, but she wouldn't be battling for a couple weeks anyway so it wasn't a big deal. Plus, she already knows Rain Dance and now her ability is Swift Swim which'll double her speed like crazy.

I had the dubious pleasure of buying blood packets for Pearl, since Gorebyss drink blood to feed, and ran into Anne who took one look at the plastic bag full of blood packets that I was holding before deciding to follow me so that she could find out if I was doing a blood ritual or something. I think she would if I really was, and I don't know what to do with that information.

Also, side note, when Pearl evolved, she dropped her pearl that used to be her head in her shell body which Nurse Joy said could be sold for a lot of cash or donated to charity that helps Spoink's who get hunted for their pearls. Apparently, her pearl was now a psychic pearl which probably meant that Pearl herself had psychic type affinity upon evolution, say that five times fast. Anyway, the two of us agreed to give the thing away for charity since we were already pretty loaded from that warehouse raid thing. Plus, her new scales were Deep Sea Scales which we could sell once they fall off naturally which meant we had that passive income stuff now like Milotic trainers.

The team haven't been the only ones hard at work. I've been doing my due diligence by studying up on this type energy stuff and have actually been looking at the research stations that want to study on how Leaf can actually do the stuff she does, there's apparently an Eevee research station here in Vermillion so I've set up a meeting with them to see what they could find out from Leaf's genes.

Moreover, because we've been static, I've been able to go to a non-Pokemon gym and do regular human training stuff while the team intensifies their previous training regimen. I can now proudly hold up Woody for twenty seconds without my arms turning into jelly... on days when my arms don't already feel like jelly.

Vali and Anne have also been coming over to hang out and just talk, Anne and I hit it off like a house on fire while Vali's been slowly trying to come to terms that I've been viewing her as a friend this whole time, with them occasionally inviting the others who I really do not mix with. Adrien kept on being annoying with the way he would disregard half the people that want to battle him and then complain that his team never gets a proper challenge, Evelyn never says anything and whenever I do end up having her in a conversation to find out stuff she likes she gets cross with me and leaves like I'm the one who isn't saying anything in the conversation, and I thought that I'd be friends with Will but he always runs away whenever I try to talk to him and he keeps on giving me these weird looks like I'm somebody that I'm not supposed to be.

I already accepted that I wasn't gonna be friends with everybody, but it was still weird to see it happen right in front of me.

Everybody aside from Will come from rich families so I don't really have much in common with them since stuff like video games or sports were ignored by the gang so that they could focus on learning 'traditional' things like playing the piano or learning how to wear a kimono or that weird rich speak thing they sometimes did whenever they get flustered, which with me was a surprisingly common experience after a night out bowling. Will and I couldn't stop laughing after the fourth 'perchance'.

Vali got that battle she wanted, and she lost the five v five because she asked me to not use type disadvantage and a lucky shot on her Swadloon, not Roselia as I later learnt, got hit by a mimicked Fire Spin from Woody which basically sealed the match. We were both on our last Pokemon and it was pretty fun having that aerial battle between Pidgeotto and Beedrill which ended as a dual knockout. She was also lucky the flying type knew Defog and tossed the Toxic Spikes that had poisoned Arctibax and Braixen away.

Anne said that Will also wanted to battle me but when I asked him, he was pretty adamant not to which I could respect.

Anyway, the five of them were currently preparing for their gym battle against Surge so they all decided to do their training in secret and away from each other which was pretty weird because I usually do all my training with a battle partner or against lots of trainers to see how I was shaping up.

None of this, however, even begins to describe the difficulty of raising a baby Pokemon. Mawile wakes me up during the middle of the night when she gets scared by something like a scary looking Pokemon she saw on the street or lightning when there was a forecasted thunderstorm at night. She's practically joined to my hip with how much she tries to stick close to me which isn't a bad thing, but it always leads to bathroom time being a major bother. And the entire team all say that she's really rowdy when I'm not in the room, so they stopped trying to help me leave the room without her; traitors the lot of them.

On the other hand, seeing her growing in real time has been a fascinating experience and I've been taking photos at least twice every day. After I showed her the first couple pictures, she always smiles whenever I aim the pokedex at her, because it has a better camera than the pokegear tiny lens, and she comes running right at me to see her picture every single time. I've also been picking drawing again because I completely forgot about it the second after Dee-Dee's appointment.

Beyond just training, I've been able to hang out with the team and enjoy some fun doing stuff like going to museums with everybody or playing catch with Chardon because he wasn't allowed to enter the museum or even just cooking up stuff that we all agreed tasted weird but good. Mawile, Chardon, Dee-Dee, and Woody are now my official cooking assistants. I also found out Beedrill likes listening to rock so I got a music player and downloaded a few songs he could listen to on headphones; he didn't know what to do with that.

I am currently finishing up my science homework since it's the only thing I didn't do and it's the topic about cells and the organisms that we can't see with the normal eye. It says that the 'mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell' because it's like the energy station of a cell and makes the energy that a cell needs to survive.

I give up, I'll finish it tomorrow or later today.

I get up and take Ralts, Leaf, Marshmallow, and Mawile out of the local library since the others wanted to experience a massage parlor so I let them.

They all were returned to me, by the parlor, all woozy and like their bodies were made of cotton candy. Dee-Dee was laughing at Chardon since she took a spa treatment instead. The bill was pretty easy to pay, even though I have a couple extra costs thanks to Lupa eating a lot of cucumber eye covers and everybody's face masks. Beedrill was stumbling around on the ground since his wings were wet and would need to wait a bit for them to dry, and by the dirty looks he's giving I'd say that the culprit is Pearl who carefully decided to wrap herself around my shoulders.

Fashion accessory and other team members acquired; I headed off to the meeting with those Eevee researchers in town.

Hopefully, they might get some answers out of Leaf's genetics that Professor Oak and I couldn't find out.

----------------------------------------

Dear Professor Kukui,

This is Evandros Endo-Morgan, a lab trainer under Professor Oak, and I was wondering if you could help me with a bit of a revelation my Sudowoodo showed me.

My Sudowoodo, nicknamed Woody, accidentally learnt Reflect which Sudowoodo's cannot learn since TM manufacturers first began cataloguing what TM's are compatible with what Pokemon. I hope you can understand my distress at the issue because my only theory as to why he managed to learn the psychic type move is that his use of Mimic ended up teaching him the status move. Woody does not know any other psychic type move. I have attached a video of him using Reflect down below.

Currently my hypothesis is that a Pokemon with the move Mimic can learn moves that they normally would not be able to learn if they practice the move for about a month, I am currently seeing whether this is true by having said Sudowoodo learn Dragon Dance from Chardon my Charmeleon before potentially moving onto a fire type move.

The reason I sent you this email is because I was wondering if you have any insight towards how Mimic functions since you are the regional Professor that studies different moves, any help or texts regarding the status move would be highly appreciated since I found zero actual papers that address this topic beyond Mimic being required to evolve Bonsly and Mime Jr.

All the best,

Evandros

----------------------------------------

Kukui read the email, he checked the videos, then he read the email again.

This had hit him like a Confuse Ray and now the Alolan Professor didn't know what to think.

First things first, he checked all research material he had on the normal type move and found that the kid who sent the email had been right about the scarcity of research done onto the move.

At least it was more interesting than finding out the advantages and disadvantages of Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, and Frenzy Plant; as if the three moves hadn't already been extensively researched by the scientific community. Tapus' give him Strength it was sooo boring.

If what the kid was saying turned out to be true... well it could cause an Explosion of interest from all parties.

"Very interesting," Kukui mused "guess I've got that excuse for a vacation."
