Chapter 9: Ally

Chapter 9: Ally

“Bring your wrist up and repeat after me: ‘Inquire about Schalter System Contract Functionality,’” Toru instructed.

Hitomi, her curiosity piqued and her trust still uncertain, followed his instructions. As she spoke the phrase, a holographic window appeared in front of her, displaying a detailed explanation of how the contract system worked. The system was designed to facilitate partnerships and agreements between participants, streamlining the process to avoid lengthy negotiations or potential complications.

“I see…” Hitomi said, absorbing the information. “So, we’ll use the loadout called ‘partner,’ correct?”

Toru nodded. The ‘partner’ loadout was a standard option provided by the system to simplify the formation of alliances. It allowed participants to join forces without having to manually set up all the details of their agreement. Given the circumstances and Toru's relatively weaker position, this straightforward approach was the best option for him.

“Yes, that’s right,” Toru confirmed. “Now, let’s shake hands.”

As they shook hands, the contract was finalized with a soft chime. The system confirmed their new alliance with a notification:

Contract has been finalized.

Hitomi Satow is now your Ally.

Hitomi tried to mask her emotions, but Toru caught a fleeting sparkle in her eyes as the contract was sealed. It was clear that, despite her initial hesitance, she was somewhat pleased with the outcome.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“Good to have you around, Hitomi,” Toru said, offering a genuine smile.

“Likewise,” Hitomi replied, her tone a touch warmer now that their alliance was official.

With their partnership established, a new set of objectives appeared on Toru’s interface:

Objectives Added:

Grimtide Lazuli

Snake Fortress

Misty Trenches

Toru scrutinized the objectives, puzzled by their cryptic names. “What do any of these mean? The names don’t ring a bell,” he muttered, furrowing his brow.

Hitomi examined the list as well. “Let’s break them down,” she suggested. “Grimtide definitely refers to the nearby beach area. It might even extend into the sea.”

“That could work to our advantage,” Toru agreed, nodding thoughtfully. “I suppose it could complement your Atmokinesis abilities.”

Hitomi raised an eyebrow at his observation. “You know about my Atmokinesis?”

Toru gave a slight nod. “My Fieldread skill includes information about the people within a given area. I was able to access details about you, including your proficiency. But there are ways to counteract or even exploit this ability, so we’ll need to be cautious.”

“I understand,” Hitomi said, her expression turning serious. “But if we’re going to approach these objectives strategically, we need to consider all possibilities.”

Toru’s gaze lingered on the objectives. “I’m starting to think these names aren’t just for show. The term ‘lazuli’ is usually associated with something significant, and it’s rarely there without reason. I’d wager there are likely to be armored beasts or some form of dangerous entity in that area.”

Toru and Hitomi continued their discussion, working through the implications of each objective and strategizing their next moves. With their alliance now in place and the challenges ahead looming, they would need to combine their strengths and navigate the trials with both caution and ingenuity.
