Chapter 18: Base

Chapter 18: Base

In one of the buildings situated on the fringes of their objective area, Toru focused intently on the task at hand. His fingers moved deftly over the interface of his matter reconstructor, selecting the Heat-seeking Sentinel option from the Grade 1 Turrets menu. With a few precise adjustments to the sliding bar, he allocated the necessary resources, using up 4 Steel Bars to craft two of these advanced turrets.

With the turrets set up, Toru and Hitomi made their way back to the first building they had entered. They climbed up to the roof, transforming it into their base of operations. From this vantage point, they could oversee their surroundings and coordinate their next moves with greater efficiency.

Toru carefully positioned the turrets in strategic, concealed locations near the stairs leading to the lower levels of the building. His intention was to maximize their effectiveness while minimizing their visibility to potential threats.

Toru turned to Hitomi, who was observing the setup with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. “If any of these turrets run out of ammunition, tap the small green box next to them,” he instructed, pointing out the container that would allow her to replenish the turrets' ammo. “I’ll be able to transfer some to you from my location. You know how to refill a sentinel, right?”

Hitomi’s expression was a bit blank, clearly indicating that she wasn’t entirely familiar with the process. Toru noted this and made a mental note to ensure she understood the basics. He had already conducted a few practice drills with her, focusing on the essentials of operating the tech to make sure she was prepared for any situation.

Despite her lack of technical prowess, Hitomi’s presence was invaluable to Toru. Her role extended far beyond that of mere company. Her abilities and support added a layer of strength to their operations that was crucial in the challenging environment they faced.
