Chapter 12: Break In

Toru couldn’t help but wonder why he hadn’t chosen the skill that integrated firearms into mechanical dogs if it was so evidently effective. It seemed like an objectively superior option, especially given the current circumstances. There could be several reasons for this: perhaps it wasn’t available to him during his training, or maybe the opponent possessed a unique Cognition proficiency that complemented their Riflecraft science. For instance, they might have had some form of neural link that allowed them to control the machines with precision. Only the user knew the full scope of his options and limitations.

As they made their way through the misty surroundings, they encountered various buildings of different sizes and designs scattered across the area. Toru and Hitomi decided to head toward the nearest building to minimize the risk of being flanked.

Toru prepared to breach the building with a tactical countdown. “In 3… 2…”

“Wait! There are better ways to handle this,” Hitomi interrupted.

Toru looked at her, intrigued. “Well, I’m all ears.”

Hitomi explained that while she couldn’t generate wind herself, she had the ability to control existing air currents. The wind around them was being manipulated subtly, which could offer some tactical advantages. Toru’s Fieldread skill had its limitations; it couldn’t analyze areas outside his direct line of sight, and the thick, concealing smog further hindered low-rank scouting abilities.

Hitomi closed her eyes, focusing her Cognition. “This building is empty,” she confirmed after a moment.

Toru, impressed but still cautious, opened the building’s entrance with a quiet but determined motion, bracing for a potential ambush. To his relief, the interior was vacant.

“Sorry for doubting you,” Toru admitted.

“It’s okay,” Hitomi replied with a reassuring smile.

“Thanks. Now, let’s discuss your abilities. How often can you use that skill of yours?” Toru asked.

Hitomi explained, “I can use it quite often, but there’s a downside. While I’m focusing on controlling the wind, I’m unable to interact with the surroundings.”

Toru nodded in understanding. It was clear that many skills, while powerful, came with their own set of limitations or trade-offs. This insight was crucial for their strategy moving forward. With Hitomi’s wind manipulation offering them a strategic edge and Toru’s own skills providing essential support, they would need to carefully plan their next moves to navigate the hazards and the ongoing conflict.
