Chapter 2: Further Inspection

Chapter 2: Further Inspection

Toru’s expertise in Riflecraft was ranked at a modest C, a level that allowed him to construct reliable and effective firearms but placed clear limits on his capabilities. His skills were sufficient for crafting practical gun equipment, but he lacked the proficiency to create anything too complex or advanced. After securing three steel ingots in his system-monitored pouch, a convenient storage mechanism that kept track of his inventory, Toru began to assess his competition, scanning the area for anyone who might pose a significant challenge.

Among the crowd, the Satow twins, Hitomi and Midori, stood out. They were famous not only for their striking resemblance but also for their exceptional Cognition abilities. Cognition, a somewhat controversial term, referred to psychic powers that varied greatly in strength depending on one's lineage. The Satow family was well-known for producing some of the most powerful elemental peacekeepers in the world, individuals who used their psychic abilities to maintain order and peace. Additionally, the Satows had a stronghold on a significant portion of the world’s logistics industry, with their influence stretching across various fields like the tentacles of an octopus, controlling and directing a wide array of global operations. Despite their shared family legacy, Toru, with his keen observational skills, noticed that one of the twins was slightly behind the other in terms of accomplishments and recognition, a subtle difference that might go unnoticed by most.

However, the twins were not the only ones to watch out for. Jin Matsui, known by the moniker Vorpal Trishula, and Angelo Vom Bruch, who carried the fearsome title of the Thunderstorm, were also present. These two individuals were as different as night and day, both in their abilities and in their approach to combat, yet both were equally formidable. Their profiles provided a glimpse into their strengths:

At first glance, Jin Matsui appeared to have the upper hand, possessing high ranks in both Bladecraft and Infusion, two specialized fields that, when combined, made him a lethal combatant. Bladecraft, the science of weapon creation and mastery, allowed Jin to craft and wield bladed weapons with unparalleled skill. His Infusion ability further enhanced his prowess by allowing him to imbue these weapons with additional power, making his attacks not only precise but also devastating. However, this specialization also meant that Jin's strengths were somewhat narrow; he excelled in specific scenarios where his skills could be fully utilized, but outside of these situations, his versatility was limited.

In contrast, Angelo Vom Bruch, with his mastery of Electrocraft, represented the pinnacle of versatility and adaptability. Electrocraft, the science of controlling and manipulating electricity, gave Angelo an extensive range of capabilities. Whether it was generating powerful electrical attacks, creating protective barriers, or even manipulating the environment to his advantage, Angelo’s skill set was broad and multifaceted. He was a true jack-of-all-trades who had achieved mastery in his field, able to adapt to any situation and counteract even the most specialized opponents. His B rank in Cognition hinted at additional abilities that complemented his electrical mastery, making him an unpredictable and dangerous adversary.

While Jin’s combination of Bladecraft and Infusion might seem like an overwhelming advantage, especially in a direct confrontation where his specialized skills could be fully unleashed, it was Angelo’s broad command over electricity that made him the more dangerous of the two. Angelo’s ability to adapt and respond to a wide range of threats gave him a level of unpredictability that Jin’s more focused skill set couldn’t match. In a battle between the two, the outcome would be far from certain, with each fighter bringing a unique set of variables to the table.
