Chapter 19: Pivot

Chapter 19: Pivot

“So, the effective range is about 50 meters, correct?” Toru asked, glancing at Hitomi while adjusting his rifle.

“Yep,” Hitomi confirmed, nodding. “I'll be able to target anyone within 75 meters, but 50 meters is where I’m guaranteed a hit.”

They were fine-tuning their strategy for clearing the area, focusing on their respective roles. Hitomi's Anemo Push skill, rooted in her Anemokinesis cognition, was pivotal in their plan. With her skill's impressive range, she was stationed on the rooftop, picking off enemies with precision. Meanwhile, Toru was down on the ground, utilizing a reliable rifle he had crafted from materials purchased with the excess points he’d accumulated during the earlier castle encounter.

The two of them methodically cleared the hostiles in their vicinity. Hitomi's sharpshooting from above provided critical support, while Toru’s grounded approach ensured that any enemy approaching their position was dealt with swiftly.

The Schalter system, which powered all aspects of the peacekeeper trials, facilitated seamless communication among team members. This also included Elvis, despite his temporary status, allowing them to coordinate more effectively.

As they progressed, Toru observed a peculiar shift in the enemy's behavior. The guard dogs, previously scattered and covering the outer perimeter, began repositioning toward the inner sections of the cluster of buildings. This adjustment seemed deliberate, hinting at a strategic change in their defensive posture.

“What’s going on here?” Toru mused aloud. “The guard dogs are moving inward instead of sticking to their previous positions. This could mean several things—perhaps they're anticipating an attack or have been given new orders.”

Hitomi’s gaze followed the shifting positions of the guard dogs from her elevated position.

Toru adjusted his stance, considering their next move. “We need to be cautious. If they’re changing their strategy, it’s likely they’re setting up for a trap or trying to corner us. Let’s stay sharp and adjust our approach accordingly.”
