Arc 1: Kingdom Goddess - Chapter 9

As the dust began to settle to the ground the view of the temple came back into clarity. Sure it was impressive before but now that I was down on ground level so to speak it was even more majestic. It really was a massive building and at human size the fine details of the stonework were beautiful. The steps leading up to the main door were even well kept. Sure there was wear here and there from the however many hundreds of years the building had been standing for, but generally it was in great condition still.

Timothy looked at me hesitantly. He wasn't moving as if waiting for me to go first. I just shrugged and looked towards him but to the side.

"Lead the way" I said.

He nodded and gulped. "Of course goddess."

With my permission he then turned and started walking towards the temple, the unfortunate crater being left in the middle of the courtyard. It would have been pretty easy for me to fix with magic I suppose but I didn't really feel like it right now. There was too much excitement bubbling up within me about my new size and seeing the inside of a real goddess temple.

Timothy looked back at me several times as we walked, possibly to remind himself that he wasn't dreaming. The titanic goddess he had just seen was indeed now a little girl walking behind him. It was probably a lot to process. Admittedly it was a bit much for me too. Being used to my goddess size for so long now it made it quite the adjustment to be back at this size.

Once we reached the steps we began walking up them. They were pretty wide stone platforms which is common for such public buildings, ease of access and all that. Thankfully it was only a couple dozen steps to the top, otherwise people would tire out before even getting inside the temple.

We now stood before the towering front doors, built easily ten feet tall for the spectacle no doubt. I vaguely remember seeing pictures of similarly impressive temples or churches in the previous world. These doors were left open of course and had depictions of various goddess like characters on them carved in stone.

Standing in the doorway off to the left was a young woman. She had long dark orange hair and violet eyes, both contrasting her pale skin. It seemed like she was waiting for us, or at least for Timothy as she was looking nervously at him. Of course she did look at me as well, but her focus was on him.

"Someone you know?" I asked looking up at Timothy.

My voice caused the girl to flinch and she quickly ran forward and bowed down on the ground before me.

"I'm sorry goddess! Please forgive me for not bowing!"

I let out a sigh and waved my hand at her. "Yes very good. That's enough groveling for now. Go ahead and stand up."

The girl stood back up and clutched her hands to her chest, still very nervous. She looked back at Timothy for guidance.

Timothy tried to clear his throat. "A-Ahem... T-his is Maisy. She's my um... Well she's my friend here at work." He then gestured to me. "This is the great Goddess Jenna."

He looked down at me to see if his introduction had been acceptable. There was still a great deal of fear in his eyes, something I didn't like.

"It's nice to meet you Maisy." I said with a nod at her.

Maisy didn't seem to know how to respond to this and so she did a standing bow towards me again and almost squeaked her response.

"T-Thank you great goddess! Its n-nice to meet you too!"

With the introductions out of the way I started walking past them and through the massive doors, both of them looking down at the child passing them with concern and uncertainty.

I turned around to them and walked backwards for a few steps.

"Well come on! Lets go inside shall we?"

Both of them fell in behind me and followed as I turned around again and walked through the doors. Immediately inside was a large foyer, its large pillars and connected hallways made of stone like the rest of the building. There were small tables around with various signage on them. My auto translation kicked in and I noticed they were all about goddesses of various kinds with direction indicators to various parts of the building.

"So what do you do here?" I asked without turning around.

Behind me I could hear both of them whispering to each other about who should be the one to tell me. I turned around to see them pushing on each other like friends might when quietly arguing. Once they saw me turn they quickly stood to attention again, a look of fear on their faces.

"Now now..." I started. "First of all relaaax. Take a few deep breaths. I'm not angry with you."

They looked at each other and then back at me. Then they closed their eyes and took a couple deep breaths like instructed which helped them calm down visibly. It was Timothy that then spoke up.

"Well um... The temple is sort of a museum." He paused to gauge my reaction which was blank. "So well it catalogs the history of various goddesses so that..." He paused again. "People remember how..."

Seeing he was stopping for real this time and crossed my arms over my chest and frowned a little. He was clearly afraid to say whatever the end of that sentence was.

"Go on" I said. "I'm not going to be angry."

Maisy was clearly scared of whatever he was going to say and was standing behind him now.

Timothy looked at the floor before speaking again. "Well the government funds this museum so that no one ever forgets the evil of goddesses."

He then flinched as if expecting me to smite him on the spot. I had no such plans of course because a museum dedicated to the goddesses of old is exactly the kind of treasure trove of information that gets me totally hyped up! I can't believe I'm actually this lucky! Even if the information in here is historically hazy at best its a dream come true for a nerd like me!

My excitement levels were reaching critical levels as my hair and eyes began glowing brightly. Inside my chest my heart fluttered and I began pumping myself up and down with my feet. My hands were clenched into fists and they were held up at my sides.

For their part the two people standing in front of me had no idea what was going on, their terror replaced with confusion as they saw my reaction. It was nothing like they were expecting and frankly they had no idea what was going on now.

"Holy frickin frick!" I shouted in excitement. "A museum? Like for real?"

Both of them were completely stunned in utter shock. They were expecting the fire and fury of a vengeful goddess but instead received an overexcited child. Their slack jawed bewilderment lasted several moments before Timothy finally recovered enough to speak.

"G-Goddess?" he asked staring at me. "A-Are you... Excited?"

Inside my head Miya was getting excited too. She spoke up to me.

"I've never been to the grand temple before. This will be fun for me too!"

I replied to her out loud. "Yeah I can't believe it! Can you believe they actually preserved history like this? I'd have figured all the goddess stuff would be hoarded by those damn mages!"

The two in front of me looked at each other and then back at me.

"Are you talking to us?" Timothy asked.

His question snapped me back to the world in front of me. I mentally told Miya I'd need to focus a bit and she should just watch for a while. Then I addressed his question with a cross of my arms over my chest and a turning up of my nose.

"Foolish human! Goddesses have better things to do than spend all my time speaking to you."

Their confusion returned as they watched me rush over to one of the information signs and begin looking it all over. They at first were unsure if they should follow me or not but eventually their curiosity overcame their nerves and they walked after me.

"So where should we go first?" I asked to no one particular. I then jumped up in realization. "Wait a second- I know!"

Whirling around I gave them both a start. They jumped in surprise as my intense gaze and sparkling eyes focused on them again. My eyes had stopped glowing now but were still filled with the light of excitement.

"You two work here right?"

I then put on my best cute little girl routine. I put my hands behind my back and lowered my head, only peeking up at Timothy. Then I twisted my feet side to side as I tried to put on a pouting face.

"Timmy. Little Timtim. You know all about this temple right? You'd tell your goddess where the juiciest info on the past goddesses is right? You will won't you?"

Timothy was completely floored by how I was acting, actually stumbling backwards into Maisy. His face was flushed red in embarrassment and you could almost see his head spinning. He stuttered and stammered, completely unable to speak and probably form thoughts in general.

It was Maisy in fact to said something. She pushed her flustered friend out of the way and stepped forward. Her face was red as well but out of actual anger. She lifted her hand and wagged her finger at me as if scolding a child.

"Now listen here! I don't care if you are a goddess or not! That's no way to treat my friend! Smite me if you have to but I won't stand by as you try to pull a sweet little girl routine on his innocent little mind!"

It was my turn to be caught completely off guard. I dropped my act instantly and sort of stared blankly up at her in bewilderment. Was she jealous? Did I like hit a nerve or something? Oh- She has a thing for Timothy doesn't she? Why else would she risk her life standing up to me if it wasn't her emotions overriding her brain. You know what? Fair enough.

Maisy's anger had faded and she smiled nervously now. She took a step back from me unsure what my reaction meant.

"Y-You know what? Actually maybe its ok. You were pretty cute."

With a blink my mind returned focus to in front of me and I crossed my arms over my stomach. It was an emotional reaction from me as I stomped my foot and turned to the side, my face puffed up in a pout.

"Yeah whatever..." I said in frustration. "You want what's best for your plaything."

This got another angry rise out of her which was sort of my plan. At least the plan that was forming in my mind at the moment. It would be fun to steal her boytoy away from her. Besides I was starting to like Timothy. He was loyal, kind, and smart enough I suppose. That's useful in a worshiper.

Maisy stomped her foot with a red face from both anger and embarrassment. She was in full on emotion mode without a care in the world of the literal goddess she was venting at.

"Plaything? How dare you! Are you suggesting I see him as my personal toy?"

I turned my face back towards her and stuck out my tongue. "If the shoe fits!"

Timothy at this point had recovered from his own shock and was helplessly watching the two of us arguing. He had no idea this was all mostly an act from me and he didn't understand exactly what we were talking about anyway. All he knew was that his friend was arguing with a real goddess and the fallout from that could and would be catastrophic. He stepped up to stand between us and help up his hands.

"Please you two! I don't know what you're arguing about but please stop!"

He looked at Maisy. "You should know better than to argue with her! She's a goddess for damn's sake! Do you want the entire kingdom to be destroyed?"

He then turned to look at me and bowed. "Please forgive her goddess! She doesn't know what she's doing!"

This interjection brought Maisy back to her senses and she collapsed on the floor before me, fear returning and overwhelming her.

"I-I'm sorry g-goddess! Please I beg you forgive me!"

As I watched their reactions a smile appeared on my face. One might even describe it as an evil grin. It was clear I was very pleased with myself and I couldn't stop myself from letting out a little giggle.

"You're forgiven Maisy" I said with a happy smile. "I think you two deserve each other. Maybe you'll have a family in the future. I'll give my blessing on that coupling." I then looked at Timothy. "Help her up."

Timothy stepped over to his friend and helped her up on her feet. She was almost crying, the emotional turmoil she had just been through probably unfair on my part. I mean it was pretty mean I guess. I'd have to make it up to her somehow. Maybe giving her a fruit?

I cleared my throat.

"You see the goddesses of the past were quite cruel and domineering if what I've been told is to believed. You two working at this temple have doubtless been exposed to more history regarding them than anyone else in the kingdom. Perhaps you've learned about kinder goddesses than most, but I doubt there's ever been one like me."

Maisy sniffled and looked over at me. "W-What do you mean?"

With another genuinely happy smile I held out my arms to my sides.

"I'm a goddess unlike any other! I'm new to your world. Back where I come from leading by example is important. Love is the most powerful of all." I lowered my arms and spoke quieter. "At least my father said that..."

Timothy looked confused. "What was that goddess?"

I lifted my hand to my mouth and cleared my throat, continuing while ignoring him.

"I'm a goddess that values my worshipers loving me, not living in terror of me. Sure I'll get angry sometimes and my angry should be feared, but that shouldn't be the focus you know? You'll find I'm more forgiving than you'd expect and easier to get along with than you think a goddess would be."

Lifting up my left hand I summon a small fruit in the palm of my hand. At this size item creation through magic is much easier as the items are smaller. It was a mango. I held it out towards Maisy, offering it to her.

"Go on. Take it."

Maisy looked nervous at first. After a couple moments of thinking however she stood up and stepped away from Timothy, holding out her hand and taking the fruit from me. She looked it over in her hands in confusion.

"It's a fruit?" she asked.

I nodded. "Take a bite."

Timothy watched his friend as she took a bite of the mango. Her face lit up in surprise as the juice ran down her face. She wiped it away with her sleeve and swallowed it.

"It's so sweet!" she gasped. "I've never seen such a fruit before!"

A smug smile came over my face and I put my hands on my hips. "Its called a mango and its a tropical fruit. If they do exist in this world that'd be why you've never seen it before. I'm sure you don't go out into the oceans of the equator much."

"She is a goddess of knowledge" Timothy said unsurprised.

"And of light!" I corrected.

He nodded to me. "S-Sorry."

With another twirl I turned around to face the left hallway. There was an exhibit down there on a goddess called Varia. That seemed like a good place to start. Even if the information in this museum couldn't be completely trusted to due time it would still be useful. I beckoned the two with my left hand.

Timothy stepped forward and nervously bowed again. "Well goddess... Wouldn't it be better to first go speak to the head of the temple? You have plans for this place now that there's a goddess in it again right?"

I stopped and put my left hand on my chin thinking. It would be a pretty good idea to take over this temple and claim it as my own. At least in an official capacity. I don't think I'd want to change much about its workings though. Leaving it as a museum its fine to me. Just whatever main area of worship there is could be converted for my worshipers. Whoever runs this place would be who I would talk to for that.

"Sure!" I said with a nod to him.

I then stepped back towards them and used my arms to gesture for him to lead the way. This made him pause confused as he looked down at me.

I sighed. "Well I don't know my way around this place. Go ahead and lead the way. You walk with Maisy and I'll walk behind."

They both knew better than to question me at this point, something I'd have to work on them with. Some questioning me is ok. Regardless they were still unsure how to deal with me as a goddess as I clearly behaved radically different then any goddesses they knew.

"S-Sure thing Goddess Jenna" Timothy said.

He then started walking down a different hallway, its direction suggesting it led deep to the center of the building. Maisy took up position next to him and slightly behind while I took up the rear. She was staying very close to him and took side glances back at me every once in a while. Timothy for his part was trying to look behind him as little as possible, though the nerves were still clear form his body language. Hopefully this boss was where he thought they'd be.
