Arc 1: Kingdom Goddess - Chapter 2

While waiting for the farmer and his family to come out of their little underground cellar I continued my attempts at creating earth elementals. The process seemed impossible for even a goddess like me to replicate however. Wither this was because of my own inexperience or due to its actual impossibility I didn't know. This meant that the elemental I had just seen was a naturally occurring phenomenon, at least to the best of my knowledge anyway. That was concerning in its on own way. Thankfully due to my access to all the prayers of my worshipers it seemed such creatures weren't common and this was some kind of freak incident. It did require investigation into my memories.

Inside my goddess zone I stood before the door to my mind palace. Miya stood behind me with a nervous body posture.

"Um Jenna" she asked. "You're going in there again right?"

Miya was always wanting to see inside here and I've said no because of concern for her reaction mainly. She would judge me for my previous life or something. However due to her reaction after finding out I was a human previously it seemed my fears were unfounded. Maybe it was time to let her in.

I fluffed my hair with my left hand. "You can come with me."

Miya gasped in shock and clutched her hands to her chest. "Really?"

"Yeah yeah" I said waiving my hand dismissively. "Why not?"

"Thank you goddess! I mean Jenna."

The door opened on its own and Miya shuffled up behind me. The excitement was apparent in her body language and expression. She was clearly nervous as well as we both entered the large library.

"Wow!" Miya said in amazement. "Is this really inside your head? What are all these books?"

I walked ahead of her towards one of the bookshelves and sighed a little. This was already extremely embarrassing and I was trying to maintain a stoic demeanor. My face blushed red on and off as I controlled my breathing in attempts to stop it completely.

"These are all my memories" I started to explain. "And yes this is inside my head. I'd stay close to the door if I were you. You're allowed to look at some of the books but if you find something scary don't blame me alright?" I took a few steps away. "Also don't talk back to any of them. You should never believe people in books asking to be let out of them. They might pull you to another world."

Miya looked at the books on the nearby bookshelf with a bit of fear now. I simply laughed and walked back over to her. Gently I reached out and held her hands in my own and looked up at her.

"I'm joking silly! Just don't think too much about it ok? If you get scared call out to me."

"Yes Jenna" she replied with a weak smile down to me.

I then let go and turned back around. "I'll be back in a short while. I got to find what I know about elementals."

With her taken care of I flew off to find what memories I had about elementals and such things. It didn't take long thanks to my ability to fly directly to them. I'd have to figure out a way to summon them to me instead of going to them. Regardless I soon came upon the bookshelf that had memories of living elements.

Leafing through the memories told me what I already suspected. According to my memories of fantasy elementals were things that occurred both naturally and could be summoned by spellcasters. If I couldn't do it in this world then it was unlikely it was possible at all unless I was missing something important. So for now summoning my own army of flame creatures was out of the picture. Depressing.

However there was an adjacent topic that caught my attention: golems. These were wholly artificial beings created from base elements and animated with magic. Sometimes with an artificial or real soul. They seemed to be just mindless servants that could be given simple commands. They came in all the flavors of elementals plus more. You could do a golem of wood, stone, earth, water, and even flesh. That last one made me clap the book shut and shudder. The mental image that was forming on its pages was one I'd rather forget.

I had found what I wanted and flew back to Miya. She was holding a book open and listening to some pop song. It was actually pretty cute as she seemd to be getting pretty into it and was bobbing along with the music. I landed next to her and startled her.

"Eek! Jenna!"

"Like what you found there?" I asked with a smile.

Miya nodded quickly and closed the book. "It's really amazing, the kind of music you've heard. Is there anything you don't know goddess?"

This made me blush and look away. Obviously there was much I didn't know and admitting it was embarrassing. I couldn't lie to her though. I let out a long sigh.

"There is an infinite amount of things to know in the universe and beyond Miya. There are infinite compounded infinities each with an infinite amount within each of them. It's literally impossible for one being to know all of it, except maybe my father."

My shoulders slumped as I was getting pretty bummed out just admitting this out loud.

"I'll never know everything. It's just not mathematically possible."

Miya smiled gently and put the book she was holding back on the shelf. She then crouched down and put her hands on my shoulders to comfort me.

"It's alright Jenna. You're still the goddess of knowledge to me. Even if you'll never know everything there is to know you still know more than any human there is."

This made me sigh again and brought some hope back to my heart. I started cheering up and looked up at her face with a smile.

"Thank you Miya." I then held up the book. "Well I found what I was looking for! Come on!"

I tossed the book into the air where it floated as I walked towards the door. Miya followed after me as we excited into the main goddess zone. The book would stay behind where it was, now in a more easily obtainable location for the time being.

"So what did you find out?" Miya asked as the door closed behind us.

"Golems!" I replied with a smug smile. "They're basically like elementals I suppose. Except they're made artificially and therefore totally controllable. Like robots made of other stuff besides metal!"

Miya tilted her head to the side. "Robots?"

I sighed and shook my head. "Forget that last part for now. Anyway I'll be going up and trying it."

Now armed with knowledge I went back up into my body and closed my eyes. Focusing in on the ground at my feet I used my fingers to twist and mold a large amount of dirt. Using my mana I was able to manipulate it into the shape of a classical golem like I'd seen in my memories. It was a hulking figure of roughly humanoid shape that stood at least seven feet tall and five feet wide. There was no face as it didn't need one to see apparently. Once it was complete I chanted under my breath a little spell I was making on the fly.

"Life to the lifeless, follow my will. The creature I've made shall no longer be still."

With the spell cast I slapped enough mana into the figure to fill it up and opened my eyes. To my surprise and delight a magic circle had formed on its front and when my mana had finished entering it the circle vanished. Did it work? Analyzing the golem showed that the mana was circulating around the body like blood did. Time to give it a command!

"Turn around" I ordered.

For a moment I held my breath. Then my eyes widened as the hulking thing began moving! With several thumping steps it turned its body around completely and ended facing the opposite direction. It then stopped moving and once again appeared lifeless.

My excitement was bubbling up inside and beaming out of my face.

"It worked!" I thought down to Miya.

Miya replied sounding excited herself. "I'm happy Jenna! Great job!" She then paused. "What does this mean though?"

Of course she wouldn't understand the implications. I thought down to her again.

"Well for starters golems are autonomous servants. So if you wanted to say have someone stand guard over something that never needed to sleep or eat then you can use a golem. In addition I could have an entire army of golem soldiers and take over the world! Ah ha ha!"

I then went silent and after a moment added.

"Just kidding of course."

There was a pause before Miya responded. She sounded a bit nervous but was getting over it.

"T-That's good to hear. For a moment there I thought you were serious."

"Of course I wasn't serious" I thought down to her. "Oh wait a sec here comes that family."

The farmer and his wife were walking nervously towards me, their two children hiding behind them. All of them were looking around in dismay at their half ruined farmstead and up at me in muted fear. My imposing figure did overshadow the entire surrounding landscape after all. My foot alone was bigger than their house. It probably wasn't easy for them to even walk closer to me, what with my brilliant magenta eyes leering down at them from the sky above.

"You can come closer" I said as softly as I could. "I'm still not gunna hurt ya'll."

Reassuring as my words were they weren't quite enough to convince them entirely. While they looked my sitting body up and down again they noticed the golem standing between my knees. This caused them to panic all over again and they started scrambling back.

"You-You've got another one of those things!" the farmer shouted.

I looked down at the golem and laughed lightly. "Oh this thing? No this isn't an elemental."

Carefully I reached down and scooped my golem up with my left hand, cradling it in my fingers as I showed it off to the family. It didn't move at all and continued being lifeless in my grip.

"See? Its a golem. I created it just now. It won't do anything unless I tell it to."

After saying that I put the golem back down in front of me and positioned it so it was facing the family.

"Lift your arms!"

The golem lifted both its arms into the air with the grinding of earth, tiny chunks scattering off its body and onto the ground.

"Now lower your arms."

Once again it followed its command instantly, its arms returning to rest by its sides.

The family wasn't convinced and the mother shouted up at me in anger.

"Look she can control those things! She's the one that set that monster on us in the first place!"

That made me mad. My expression twisted into a frown and I glared down at her. I used my left had to gesture to the golem at my feet.

"Listen here woman. The one that attacked you was an elemental. It was made of stone with dirt added to it remember? This is a golem. Go-lem! Its entirely made of dirt as you can clearly see! Its not naturally occurring its artificially created."

This explanation caused the family to at least halt their retreat. Knowing and understanding things made them inherently less terrifying.

I sighed and put my hands on my knees.

"The 'knowledge' part of 'goddess of knowledge and light' isn't there for show you know?"

The farmer stepped forward in front of his family and looked up at me nervously.

"Y-You said you were Goddess Jenna?" he asked. "So you're goddess of those two things?"

"Yes sir!" I said with a nod. "So you don't have to be afraid of me or my golem alright?" I smiled as an idea occurred to me. "In fact... You could have this golem hang out with you and help you rebuild your farm if you'd like!"

He looked down at the golem and then back up at my face in confusion.

"It... Help us?"

"Yeah yeah!" I nodded. "What's your name by the way?"

The man looked at his family. His wife looked to be in her late thirties with long blonde hair. She was holding their daughter closely who was around twelve and had hair like her mother. Their fourteen year old son had short black hair like his father and was standing near them both. The whole family had pale or light skin.

After gathering enough courage the farmer turned back to me and looked up at me face in the sky above. He cleared his throat and finally spoke.

"My name is Silas. This is my wife Kiria." He said gesturing to the woman.

Then he pointed at the two children. "My son Vlick and my daughter Laura."

I nodded and waved slowly at them. "Its nice to meet you all. As your father said I'm the goddess Jenna."

Vlick the young man stepped up next to his father and was first to speak.

"Goddesses are horrible monsters from long ago! They're supposed to all be gone from this world!"

Interesting. Of course while history is distorted to more extreme degrees the more time passes all myths are based on true events. This story of goddesses being all gone could have some truth to it and if so is very interesting indeed. I'd continue here without refuting his believed history however.

"Well I guess I'm a goddess that came back then hm?" I said relaxing my posture.

I was deliberately moving around as little as possible. Seeing something as big as me move would subconsciously cause more fear in their little minds. Being as still as possible then gave the most stable impression of me, at least I hoped.

"I've done nothing to hurt you have I? Couldn't I just smush you like a little bug if I wanted?"

This made Vlick gulp and step back behind his father.

Silas frowned and shouted up at me. "You claim to be benevolent and yet threaten my son!"

I groan and roll my eyes. "Come on! Are you serious? I didn't threaten him. I just pointed out the obvious. If I wanted to hurt or kill you I would have already. But I don't have anything to gain from doing that so why the heck would I? I've even offered to help you rebuild your little farm."

This was all true of course and Silas couldn't deny it. He huffed a bit and turned to his family before looking back up at me. Their livelihood was devastated and without help they wouldn't recover from this. What choice did they really have but to accept my help?

"W-Well I thank you for that offer. So long as you don't do anything threatening we'll gladly accept that offer."

I simply nodded and smiled knowingly. "Very good!" I then reach down and touch the golem. "Enchantment alteration: additional command! You will now obey these humans in the assistance of rebuilding their farm. Once your task is complete you will self destruct."

They all looked at the golem with concern and curiosity both. They still weren't sure what to think about it and didn't understand what I had said either.

"Come on then" I said with a smile. "Get over here and take a look at it!"

Silas and the boy walked over to the golem, slowly at first but then with normal walking. His wife and daughter also came closer but stopped when he held up his hand to signal them to stay back. It took another few moments of hesitation but the man and his son did finally completely approach the thing. They they looked it over in fascination, walking around it to examine it from all sides.

"Its a golem" I explained again. "Functionally just a big pile of dirt that's been brought to life with magic. It will follow your spoken commands and only spoken commands. It wont take any action you haven't ordered it too so don't give orders to it flippantly. Go ahead and give it a try!"

After another few moments of hesitation Silas stood up straight in front of the golem.

"Take one step forward!"

The golem obeyed and its right foot moved and landed with a thump, its left foot following immediately after. This movement caused all of them to flinch but when it returned to its motionless state they relaxed again.

"There you see?" I said. "Pretty cool right?"

The boy Vlick now ran up to it and began touching it, clearly enamored by it. His father cleared his throat and looked it over again.

"Yes its quite useful indeed." He then looked up at me. "You're truly allowing us to use this golem?"

I nodded. "Yup! At least until your farm is restored. Once that's done the golem is going to crumble into dirt again. I can't have you having it permanently. Chances to abuse its power you know? Nothing personal."

"I understand goddess" he replied. "Though you won't be staying to help us yourself?"

A little laugh escaped me. "Oh deary no! I really must be going. I have a date to meet with the king you see!"

The wife had been silent this entire time. She finally spoke up now.

"T-Thank you then goddess for stopping and helping us. You surely have much more important things to do than bother with commoners."

Her husband stepped over to her and put his arm over her.

"I'm not sure what you mean" I said with my hand to my chin. "I've been helping 'commoners' as you say pretty much this entire time I think. Regardless its not a big deal. This only took a short while anyway." I shrugged. "Well enjoy your golem!"

After saying that I began standing up. Of course this caused them to react with slight fear. Seeing someone as big as me standing up to full height is always going to be overwhelming to humans, a sadly un-correctable phenomenon. The booming of my feet in particular causing them to flinch back several steps.

The girl Laura broke away from her mother and called up to me, much to everyone's surprise.

"Um goddess..." she said. "I just wanted to say how pretty you are."

She then lowered her head in clear embarrassment as her father came to take hold of her.

This got a light giggle out of me, my laugh chiming out like a crystal bell. My joy infectiously affecting the humans at my feet through the sound and seeming to cheer them up. They did now of course have hope their lives could be restored despite the terror they had just gone through today.

"Thank you little Laura" I said down to her with a big smile. "I think you're pretty yourself. You'll grow up into a beautiful woman, that I'm quite sure of! And goddess knows best!"

This caused her to blush even more uncontrollably and hide her embarrassed face in her hands. Meanwhile her father's grasp on her relaxed and he sort of cuddled her close to his body. The family's entire attitude had changed completely compared to when I had first arrived. Instead of a terrified group of people huddled underground accepting their doom, here stood a happy family preparing for their second chance at their way of life.

"Alright then I'll be off now" I said waving my left hand. "Bye bye!"

They all waved back to me and said their farewells as I took my first few steps. While the thundering tremors of my footfalls still shook their bodies they no longer shook their spirits. With the size of my strides it took over a few of them to put the homestead behind me and soon it was out of sight.

Now it was time to continue to the capital. No more delays! I will find out what kind of king rules this country!
