Arc 1: Kingdom Goddess - Chapter 8

The relaxing sounds of nature filled the large open room, the light of the sun illuminating everything in a warm glow. Tall and green trees towered over lush undergrowth which swayed in the gentle breeze. The sound of insects buzzing could be heard faintly alongside the distant sound of a bubbling brook.

This was the scene that was displayed on the large screen in the goddess zone, the sound coming through several speakers nearby. I was sitting on the manifested couch alongside Miya and pointing out things on the display. This was a memory of a forest where I lived in the previous world. She was very interested in it as I explained things about the forest.

"See the ferns actually help protect the trees from things like fire because with so much water filled plant matter around it helps absorb the heat."

Miya was watching intently and then leaned forward, pointing out a bush with dark berries on it.

"What are those berries? I've never seen them before."

I looked at the berries and then closed my eyes to try to remember. I put my fingers on my temples and grunted as I strained. Eventually another screen popped up with information arranged it.

"Aha!" I said removing my hands. "It's a huckleberry! It's pretty bitter if I remember correctly. You know, like its got a tang to it?"

This made Miya smile as the extra information vanished. She sat back on the couch and sighed wistfully

"I'd love to try them sometime. I really wish I could."

My reply was interrupted as a sudden alarm began blaring all around the room. A flashing red light had been installed a while ago to alert me when anything, well alarming, happened that I could pick up on.

"Hold that thought!" I said.

I jumped up from the couch and ran over to the map display, Miya following behind me. On the readout there was a large pillar of light, a signal of some kind, coming from the capital city of Norlov. Then without warning an audio message came through into my mind. Was someone actually initiating psychic contact with me?

"Please come back soon great goddess!" a male voice said.

Miya was in utter shock and looked at me for information. Not that I understood anymore than she did at this point.

With a flick of my hand the map zoomed over to the location of the signal which was quickly fading out of existence. It had originated from a large temple looking building in the middle of the city. With a closer zoom it revealed a young man holding a large staff of some kind. He was a worshiper of mine and he looked familiar somehow. Probably that priest I had met a day or so ago at the capital.

"That little shit!" I said angrily as I leaned over the map. "What the frick did he just do?"

"That was different then a prayer right Jenna?" Miya asked in confusion.

I leaned back and crossed my arms over my chest, a frown on my face.

"Yeah. Probably something with that staff. Looks like I have no choice but to go over."

Miya nodded and stepped back from me. "Ok. I'll be cheering for you from here!"

Whatever this dumb guy had just done had directly connected to my mind without the medium of prayer. It was like a certain spell I remember from fantasy settings. "Message" when cast allowed anyone to contact anyone mentally and send some kind of short message to them, usually allowing the target to reply as well. That priest didn't look like a mage so that staff had to be it.

Quickly I leapt up into my body and regained full control. I had been sitting down a short distance away from the village of Doovlin during the day while watching memory videos with Miya. The recently falling snow had actually fallen down and started covering me like some kind of monolith.

With a shake I stood up again, brushing all the snow off myself in a mini blizzard of scattering powder. Then with a thought I opened up a portal directly to the temple in Norlov, aiming to step into the big courtyard in front of temple steps. Thus and so I teleported through the magic circle and instantly arrived before the towering structure.

Of course it was barely as tall as my thighs, its height almost comparable to the castle across the city. The whole construction radiated a holier than thou attitude, its mostly white stone blending in with the snow covering the streets. The steeples were impressive and it had many large windows of brilliant stained glass. Altogether it fit well the ascetic of capital city temple.

My steps out of the portal thundered down and shook the snow off several nearby buildings, my sudden appearance starting a panic in the citizens. Of course it would. I raised my hands.

"Ok everyone don't panic. I'm not here to do anything crazy. I'm just here to meet with someone to contacted me alright?"

Wither or not this announcement quelled all fears of the populace I had no control over, though it did put most people at ease for now. I then directed my gaze at the temple and crossed my arms over my chest, a light frown on my face.

"Will the dumbass who used message please come out here?"

It would take awhile for that priest to travel outside the building, if indeed they were brave enough to do so. With some practice I've been able to use my goddess vision easier with my eyes closed and even some with them open. Because of this I could actually watch him moving through the inside of the temple without having to go into the goddess zone at all. He was making quick progress, running to reach the front where I was standing.

While waiting there were a few people who stopped at the ends of alleys or street corners to look up at me and see what I was doing. I paid them no mind and just focused on the entrance to the temple. It had pretty big and ornate doors, left open so that the building was easily accessible to the public.

This place must have been some kind of leftover from when they actually worshiped goddesses. Maybe the people dressed up in clergy attire are just roleplaying? Doesn't matter. After another minute I'd have my answers.

The young man appeared at the entrance of the temple, stopping to catch his breath before continuing. Then after his brief pause he then ran down the steps and threw himself down on the ground a fair distance in front of my feet. He no longer had the staff but otherwise looked the same as he did last time I saw him.

"Great Goddess Jenna!" he said. "Please forgive me for contacting you in such a way! I- I-"

With a sigh I waved my left hand dismissively.

"That's enough groveling. I never caught your name by the way."

He lifted up his head and then sat up on his legs, his blushing face showing how flustered he was.

"M-My name is Timothy goddess. I've always wanted to meet a real goddess and-"

I cut him off again and put my hands on my hips, not trying to avoid looming over him at all. He was clearly scared of me, though it seemed some strange devotion was overpowering it to a great degree. He'll be handy certainly.

"So what's this temple called anyway? You seemed so keen on me visiting last time."

Timothy managed to stand up on his shaking legs. His neck was tilted all the way back in order to try and look up at me in the sky.

"T-This is the Grand Temple of the Sisterhood my goddess. It's the last goddess temple in the kingdom."

"Hmm.." I put my left hand on my chin in thought.

There obviously was a pantheon at some point then. Did they keep this temple around as some kind of warning about how evil goddesses were then? Probably. I wish I could see inside. Maybe I'd just use him and look through his eyes like I've done with other people.

"D-Do you want to come inside Goddess Jenna?" he asked.

That question got a frustrated sigh from me and I crossed my arms over my chest again.

"Well that'd be pretty hard for me wouldn't it shit bird?" I then huffed. "Sorry that was mean. I meant obviously I can't go inside there seeing how big I am yea?"

This got a look of confusion from Timothy who looked back at the temple and then back up at me. His expression made it seem like he thought I was the one spouting nonsense not him.

"Um but goddess..." he stammered. "Wouldn't you just take human form like the other goddesses?"

Take human form? As in become human size? That was an option this entire time?

"Huuuuuh?"

I went slack jawed, my arms dangling at my size. My face was one of utter bewilderment.

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

"They could just do that?"

The flabbergasted shout made Timothy and anyone else around cover their ears from the volume. In response the young man also got his own expression of complete and utter confusion.

He took a step back. "I- I mean yes?"

Miya spoke up from inside my head, her tone expressing the same confusion as the priest's.

"Um... The goddesses of old took human form quite a lot goddess. B-But I guess I never really told you any stories about those events huh? It was kinda rare I suppose... Sorry Jenna..."

I raised my hands up and waved them briefly. My eyes were closed and I was trying to concentrate.

"Ok ok. Everyone just shut up a minute here." I spoke. I then thought to Miya. "It's fine Miya."

With my eyes closed I began focusing in on my body and the flow of mana throughout it. If changing to human size was a real thing then it probably had something to do with shrinking my body down to that size. Seemed easy enough. The body is just a vessel for the soul, so regardless of what size my body was it wouldn't alter my spirit self at all. At least that's how it should work.

"Get smaller" I thought to myself. "Smaller..."

I imagined myself getting smaller, seeing myself the size of a human with all my imagination. My body readout didn't alter in any way on my heads up display at first though. However after a few moments of thinking compressing thoughts it began to get smaller! Little by little like deflating a balloon, or in this case pressing it into a smaller space.

Briefly I opened my eyes and saw that I was indeed shorter than before. Amazing! I must have gotten a whole fifty feet shorter! This action broke my concentration though and I instantly jumped back up to full height.

"Shoot.... Ok hang on."

"You can do it Jenna!" Miya said to encourage me.

I smiled internally and externally as I replied in thought. "Thanks Miya. But really I need to concentrate."

As my passenger returned to being quiet I returned to my compression comprehension. This time around the process was easier, my body getting smaller and smaller as I focused in on my own self image. It seemed my imagination was really the limit when it came to this goddess stuff. There was no decrease in power or feelings of getting weaker as I got smaller either.

Eventually after a whole minute I saw myself as actually human size, well more accurately the size a nine year old would actually be as a human child. Thankfully my mental image was boosted by the fact inside my head Miya and I were the "correct" sizes so to speak. Being this tiny, probably three and a half feet, was really bizarre feeling though. It was like having to go to the bathroom and having to hold it in. It also took a tiny amount of mana to maintain this size I noticed.

Timothy's voice interrupted my thoughts. "G-Goddess?"

I opened my eyes suddenly and was overwhelmed with vertigo. I stumbled backwards and fell onto my butt with a grunt. At first I panicked about crushing houses but then I saw my surroundings.

Low and behold I was actually the size of a human child! There standing before me was Timothy, now almost twice my height. The streets and buildings, the temple in the background, all of it so huge. Even the clouds in the sky were further away. Honestly it was a lot to digest, going from two hundred to under four feet tall so quickly. It made me dizzy.

"This feels so wrong" Timothy said nervously. "B-Being taller than a goddess..."

To help regain my wits I put my left hand on my head and closed my eyes, taking a couple deep breathes to regain my composure. After a few seconds I opened my eyes and stood up again.

"Don't worry about it kid." I said flatly. "Do you wanna kiss my feet or something?"

The dizziness overcome I stood up and brushed my skirt off. Looking around was still a pretty wild trip though. Though now the excitement was starting to bubble up inside me. The implications of this new discovery were world altering!

In a fit of delirious joy I threw up my hands and started laughing in a way that could only be described as maniacally.

"Hahaha! Fucking finally!" I shouted in delight. "I'm back to normal!"

This entire event had caught those around me in surprise as well, even Miya not sure exactly how to react to my actions. Timothy was especially bewildered and just stood there wide eyed staring at me.

"C-Congratulations" Miya said softly.

With a flair of my arms I took a step backwards, losing balance for a moment before standing up straight again. Then I leaned over in a deep bow, flourishing my arms before righting myself.

"Thank you! Thank you! Yes I am the most wonderful and amazing goddess you've ever seen aren't I?"

Timothy recovered from his shock and gulped. He then began nodding and clapping for me.

"Y-Yes g-goddess. You surely are."

Mostly ignoring him I twirled around and fluffed out my hair, my ego getting a substantial boost from this new development. Now I'll be getting up close and personal in the lives of my worshipers. It's time to get excited!

There was a sudden pause in my theatrics as I thought a bit deeper on this new size. There wasn't any feeling of decreased power or anything. Do I still have strength comparable to my goddess size? This new human size would ultimately have superhuman powers like Miya if that was the case. I mean its not like I shouldn't be able to do crazy stuff at this size. Time for a test.

Looking down a nearby street I could see a small house in the distance, probably a quarter mile away from where I was standing. If my theory held true I could run down there and back really fast. Like a superhero! Super speed time!

"See that house over there?" I asked pointing. "Check this out!"

With my announcement made to no one in particular I braced my legs and took off sprinting. To my surprise and great delight the entire world around me seemed to stand still like in some action movie. My legs were moving and my feet were impacting the ground as I ran normally in my perspective, though to everyone around me I was probably a blur. It also seemed with each step I took I covered much more ground than I would have expected, the buildings blurring in my vision.

I reached the house at the end of the street and came to a stop, a rushing wind whipping up around me and blowing the flags hanging on the buildings wildly. There were shocked expressions on the faces of everyone around me. It had only been a dozen seconds for me and for everyone else probably less than one.

I was a superhero!

My face widened into a wild grin as I braced myself, blasting off in a sprint for the return trip. The blurry surroundings began to come more into focus this time as I paid more attention to them. With the excitement racing through me like a raging fire I reached Timothy even faster than before. Then with a skidding stop I came to a halt before him once again.

"Wh-What?" Timothy said stunned.

The rush of wind caught up to me and threatened to blow his clothing off almost. He clutched his robe around him and closed his eyes. Once the wind had passed he looked down at me in shock and awe.

"G-Goddess..."

This got another big grin from me and I turned to look around.

"Yes I'm amazing!"

I then spotted a nearby produce cart. The perfect target for my next test.

"Haha! Hey check that out!"

Using my newfound speed I rushed over to the cart and smiled. It looked sturdily built and was filled with fresh cabbages. Time for the strength test! My left hand clenched into a fist and I swung my arm back to wind up for a punch.

"Goddess punch!"

With unapologetic enthusiasm I delivered the blow to the cart, my fist impacting the wood with awesome force. The entire cart completely shattered into a million pieces, the contents inside blasting apart like miniature fireworks of leafy green. The wood and plant matter showered down like hail all over the street and nearby buildings as if an explosion had went off. The entire event made a horrible crashing sound that echoed all around.

I took a step back and blushed red, my hand still in a fist as I held it up to my chest. Looks like I didn't know my own strength.

"Oops..."

The door of the building in front of me opened and a middle aged man in an apron looked out at the utter distribution. His face was one of horror and anguish as he clutched his head with his hands. He half shouted half wailed at the sight of the mess before him.

"My cabbages!"

That was my cue to exit. With an shy grin I simply turned around and sped off, the tailwind from my legs tossing some of the leaves into the air again. I was standing back with Timothy across the courtyard before they had a chance to settle down onto the cobblestone again.

Timothy was just standing there still in shock, looking down at me with a blank expression on his face.

I cleared my throat. "Well um... Just one more thing to test then."

How high could I jump is what I was wondering now. Great enough to leap tall buildings in a single bound I hoped. So after stepping a short distance back from Timothy I spread my legs. Then crouching down I leapt into the air with all the strength I could muster.

The immediate effect was more than I had anticipated. The very street beneath my feet collapsed down in a small crater, stones and dirt flying upwards as the force downwards gave them nowhere else to go. There was a horrible crunching sound of grinding rock and a small dirt cloud kicked up.

As for me, I suddenly found myself completely blind as the world blurred before my eyes. Within an instant the wind rushing by my head rendered me deaf as well. Perhaps I had overdone it again.

In a second or two my vision cleared however and what I saw took my breath away. I was high in the sky, higher even than my normal goddess height. Down below me was the capital city spread out like a play mat, the buildings and people like a tiny model. The air was very cold up here and the sunlight bright. I could see forever in every direction.

Of course this beautiful view couldn't last. Things that went up had to come down after all. After only what felt like a second I found myself falling back down to the ground below. Panic overtook me as I flailed around, my decent getting faster and faster. I was sure I'd survive the fall but it would certainly hurt. The ground below was rapidly approaching and I found I had twisted myself around in the air so I would land laying out flat.

"AAAAAAAAAHHH!"

My scream pierced the still winter air as I fell from the sky. Then the impact came. An echoing boom heralded my landing as the impact sent a small earthquake out at least as strong as one of my normal steps. Everything went black for me for a moment as the very ground gave way and the blast sent dirt and stone flying everywhere. This was probably the most spectacular bellyflop anyone had ever seen.

It hurt.

With a sputter I lifted my face out of the dirt and spat a few lose rocks out of my mouth. The internal readings were showing no critical damage thank my father. None of my teeth were missing, there were no broken bones, and all systems were functional. It seemed some scratches and bruises were all I had and otherwise I was no worse for wear. The landing had hurt though.

Lifting my head up a bit more I looked up to see I was at the bottom of a large crater. It was probably twenty feet across and ten feet deep into the ground. What an impact! The aches and pains in my body certainly felt like they came from being a goddess meteor.

I tried to push myself up with my arms but a sharp pain made me go weak and I flopped onto my belly and face again. Ugh... I really need to learn to stick the landing if I'm ever doing that again.

"Goddess!"

Timothy's voice came down to me. He was standing at the edge of the crater and looking down at me with great concern on his face. Thankfully he was alright.

I was still a bit dizzy and my voice cracked as I spoke.

"Mr. Priest... Goddess needs help."

Without a moment's hesitation Timothy jumped into the crater and started sliding down the dirt walls towards me. His bravery was commendable and his concern understandable. He didn't know that the little damage I had sustained was already being healed by my goddess body.

Miya piped in. "Jenna I'm so glad you're ok! That was really scary!"

I thought back to her, my embarrassment strong. "Don't worry Miya. I'll plan better next time."

Timothy had reached me now and reached out his hand to me. I took it and he helped me stand up by pulling me. I remained quiet as he took me under his arm and assisted me climbing out of the pit I had created with my body. The whole ordeal was pretty embarrassing for me but he said nothing in mockery of me.

Once we had made it to the top of the crater he let go of me and took a couple steps back, his expression one of uncertainty. Perhaps he was afraid of how I'd react to needing help from a human. When he spoke there was no condescending tone or anger.

"I-If you're all done testing goddess are you wanting to go into the temple?"

To be honest I was quite impressed with how he was handling this all. All in one day he had met his goddess and helped her out of a mess she had created. Even after that though he hadn't wavered in his faith in her.

I had just finished brushing myself off, my injuries already completely healed. Then with a few flicks of my head I shook all the dirt out of my long glowing gold hair. I used my hands to get the rest of it out, brushing with my fingers as a comb. Once I was gone I adjusted my clothing and stood up straight.

"Yeah" I said in a somewhat defeated tone. "I'd like that."
