Arc 1: Kingdom Goddess - Chapter 6

The midday sun shone through the plain glass windows and into the large room. The light highlighted all the dancing dust that scattered all around and got onto everything like invisible invaders. The air itself was quite still thanks to the closed windows, the air avoiding getting stale by the airflow coming from the open doors at either end of the room. The stone walls were sparsely decorated with small solid color tapestries and of course the currently unlit wall sconces.

Inside this large and quiet room stood several wooden tables, each solidly built with thick legs that brought them to waist height. On these tables were glass cases and wooden stands, all of them arranged with small and cheap metal plates. Inside the cases were items and pages from books, the plates each having a short description of the contents within the glass. Everything was kept orderly and clean.

It was a museum: a public display of history for all the kingdom to see. One would be forgiven to mistake this museum for something else from the outside however, though no one from the local area of the continent would make such a mistake. This building was famous for being the last of its kind, a relic of the distant past kept alive for the warning it displays. One of the crown jewels of the capital city Norlov and stationed in prominence alongside its castle. The Grand Temple of the Sisterhood: the last goddess temple in the kingdom of Celeduun.

The government of Celeduun keeps this ancient structure around and funds it for the sole purpose of reminding its citizens of the dangers of goddess worship. Inside all the displays and exhibits detail the history of goddesses in this area of the world and the terror they unleashed on the mortals. It also of course tells of the few goddesses that were a benefit to civilization, though those are few and far between. As for as the historical accuracy of what lies within this place: who can tell? Even without the suspicion of propaganda the process of time fades all truth in the human mind.

It is within this grand temple that one particular human wiled away his days, his devotion to his job bleeding into the subject of his work as well. Timothy Ukell, a young man twenty years old. His hair was short, straight, and brown, his eyes blue, and his skin pale. Curious and loyal to those he trusts, though his anti social nature keeps him from making too many friends or finding a long lasting relationship.

Today was a day like any other, his work as inventory keeper bringing him around the temple to make sure everything was safe an in its place. As always he wore the uniform of the workplace: a classical white and gold robe that emulated the clergy of old. He was in the room dedicated to a goddess of fire and lightning named Vashka. She wasn't a particular favorite of his but her room needed to be cleaned as well.

"I wish I could have met you" he said to himself.

Timothy had an unusual fascination with goddesses and looked up to them greatly. It was perhaps more of the idea of goddesses that the young man had fallen in love with. Having a higher power that would take responsibility for their subjects and care for them was something all mortals craved to some degree. Although in his case it might be more as well, as he lacked a consistent feminine touch in his life as a whole.

As he walked through the room he made note of the items in the cases, ensuring they were undamaged and so on. There were few visitors today which was typical of the temple. Usually only tourists came to see the temple or parents bringing their children to learn the evils that lurked in the past. This always made him sigh in disappointment. Didn't people understand there were good goddesses as well?

His work was interrupted suddenly and dramatically when a distant and thundering boom assailed his ears. Accompanying this sound was a low tremor in the floor beneath his feet, the vibrations shaking his legs just a little. He stopped what he was doing and looked around, wondering what it could have been.

The confusion turned to fear as within seconds another distant boom reached him accompanied with more tremors. He ran to the window in fear and peered outside, though from the place in the city the temple stood there was little he could see from ground level. The glass in front of him shook as the booms got louder and the earthquakes stronger, as if the source was getting closer.

It was almost like they were footsteps.

Timothy quickly turned around and ran from the room in a panic, his mind racing with a thousand different possibilities. Footsteps were out of the question as nothing was that big. There were big monsters in legends but the likelihood of such a beast showing up were minimal at best. Giants had vanished from the world as well at least a thousand years ago as well. Perhaps it was some kind of attack from powerful mages from another kingdom? Yes that was most likely.

As he dashed into the hallway he was almost knocked over as another of the earthquakes shook the building. Dust fell from the ceiling and he heard things rattling in their display cases. Recovering from his stumble mid stride he ran down the hallway and around the corner into another bigger main room.

There he saw a young woman who was slightly older than he was. She was another employee of the temple who helped clean up around the rooms. Her name was Maisy and she was quite pretty. Her hair was long and colored deep orange which contrasted with he pale skin. Her eyes were violet and sparkled when she was happy. She was only openly herself around other women and kept quiet around men.

"Hey Maisy!" Timothy shouted.

Maisy was hiding between a large solid bookcase and a door, trying to hide herself from view. When she heard a voice she stepped out from behind it and clutched one hand to her chest in fear.

"Timothy!" she said with a shaking voice.

He ran across the room to be closer to her as she sunk back into her hiding place. The earthquakes were getting stronger and each one caused the room to shake and be filled with the clattering of its contents.

"What's going on? I looked out the window where I was but couldn't see anything!"

"You didn't hear? There's a goddess coming!"

Her eyes were wide and filled with terror. She had obviously come into this room to hide as it was near the center of the temple. It was one of the safest places to be in the event of a earthquake regardless of the supposed cause so it showed her quick thinking.

Timothy had heard rumors of a goddess appearing in one of the provinces to the far west, though he like everyone else didn't believe such outlandish claims. Though he did wish they were true. Wither his coworker was imagining this goddess's arrival or not this was clearly an emergency. His sense of duty kicked in and he nodded.

"You stay here Maisy. I'll go outside and check what's going on."

She nodded and looked at him nervously. "Ok Timothy. Be safe out there."

Now that she had been reassured at least somewhat Timothy turned and ran from the room. The continuing quakes threatened to send him tumbling to the floor as they violently shook his legs. It was imperative that he discover what was going on, even if it was the last thing he did. Yes the thought his death would soon be upon him had entered the back of his mind, but at this point his curiosity kept terror from overwhelming him.

Through the temple he ran, dodging fleeing visitors and workers alike. This kind of panic indicated that it was indeed some kind of attack. He didn't bother stopping to ask anyone what was going on out there, as even if he did it wouldn't satisfy his craving to know. Seeing this unprecedented event was something that simply must be done with one's own eyes.

Finally he made it to the doors of the temple, the sunlight beaming in and blinding him temporarily. Once his eyes cleared he stepped out and scanned the horizon in all directions. That's when his mouth dropped open and his entire body locked up.

There to the west of the city was a sight no one could have predicted: a little girl towering over two-hundred feet tall walking without a care in the world. She looked no older than nine, like someone's daughter, her cute face surrounded by long golden hair. Her eyes were a vibrant violet and her skin was fairer than any human could hope for. Her outfit was colorful for sure, though it seemed like it belonged on a member of the citizenry than on someone of high standing. Of high standing she was indeed, for the only explanation for her existence was that she was a goddess manifest.

Timothy finally gasped air into his lungs, even his breathing previously held captive by the stunned blankness of his mind. There was an actual real goddess walking towards his city! In all of his life's dreams he never would have imagined that this of all things would actually happen. It was impossible, world altering, too fantastical to believe. He had to meet her! Even if it cost him his life.

With not a moment to spare he took off running, half stumbling down the steps of the grand temple until he reached the main street below. Another of her footsteps shook the city, his balance not managing this time. He tumbled down onto his stomach on the cobblestone with a grunt of pain.

"Ugh..."

Some bruises weren't going to keep him from meeting the idol of his dreams however. With swiftness he pushed himself back to his feet and began running once again. It didn't matter if this goddess was here to destroy the city or not, simply speaking to her for even a moment was all he wanted. Just to be here at the turning point in history and speak to a returned goddess would let him die happy. Would other goddesses appear? What was this goddess like? Questions filled his mind as he took off running again.

Other citizens of the city were fleeing in panic, abandoning their goods and horses as they ran away or took shelter inside buildings. Above in the sky a small cloud of darkness could be seen leaping from rooftop to rooftop in the direction of the approaching goddess. Likely the grand magus of the king's court. Thought what even the elf could do to such an overpowering being was anyone's guess.

Timothy stopped running as the earthquakes stopped. It seemed the goddess was standing at the city gates now. He could see from here that the walls barely reached her knees. She then bent down and spoke to the people below, her voice booming over the buildings. Timothy covered his ears from the volume at first, though he removed them when he noticed something strange. Strangely despite its high volume there was a certain gentleness to her words that kept his ears from ringing in pain.

He then saw the darkness reach the city wall and leap into action. Quickly the eyes of the goddess were attacked. Of course the attack was swiftly countered and further attacks proven worthless. Even the mightiest mage in the kingdom stood no chance against such divine might. Fear began to creep back into his heart as he wondered what would happen now.

To his great surprise the goddess didn't retaliate or even attack. No she was in fact speaking to Illiad, even showing him respect. Her voice boomed out over the city and so her introduction could be plainly heard. Goddess Jenna, overseeing light and knowledge. Such a goddess didn't exist in the records of the temple. She had to be one lost to history.

This almost meant that Timothy nor anyone else had any idea what this Jenna goddess was like, or what her powers were. As her conversation with Illiad continued Timothy noticed a massive book was summoned from thin air and hovered around her. Was the mage standing on it? It seemed he was. Books and knowledge do go together.

Now was his chance to go speak to her, though it was quite far away. He would have to run all the way across the entire city to reach the wall they were standing at. She said something about wanting to meet the king, though how she'd get to the castle he had no idea. Her feet would crush all the buildings if she stepped on them!

It seemed his fears were about to be realized as she lifted her foot and stepped over the wall. She called for the streets to be cleared and amazingly her massive boot came down between the buildings right in the street. She was being so very careful as she took her first few steps into the city, most of the goddesses from history would just stomp their way right through everything.

This was the moment that Timothy knew he loved this new goddess. She was obviously kind and gentle, her mannerisms reminding him of a child as much as she looked it. He wanted to devote his life to Goddess Jenna, to make her happy and see her grow into the goddess she deserved to be. His heart raced and his skin heated up. What had come over him he wondered? Perhaps this is what a parent feels when they look at their child he thought.

"I'm coming goddess!" he shouted.

As she began walking to the castle he began running towards it as well, his comparatively tiny legs nothing compared to her gargantuan strides. Whatever it took though he would reach her. Each of her steps made him stumble as they shook the earth, the loose stones in the street clattering about with each disastrous impact. He would not be deterred and the streets were clear due to the panic giving him plenty of space to stumble around.

Eventually he reached the castle, the goddess reaching it within a dozen steps or so, such was the difference between their strides. He stopped running and caught his breath, the main gates to the castle being only a couple hundred feet ahead of him. There was already a crowd gathering with knights moving to block them off and keep them away from the dangerous titan. The slight movement of her feet could spell the end dozens of people in a single movement after all.

Timothy took this moment to look up at the towering girl. He blushed at first and looked down, worrying about seeing up her skirt. His fears were unfounded as it seemed under her skirt she wore some kind of short pants as well. Could this young goddess be conscious of such an occurrence happening? Of course no one normal would want to view up a little girl's skirt though he knew there existed perverts out there. Either way it seemed this girl wouldn't need to worry about such a thing due to her own foresight or otherwise.

Goddess Jenna was immediately occupied with the mage and meeting with the king. From what he knew of King Alphonse the man was quite unfriendly. Even a goddess might have trouble dealing with his particular personality. He wanted to get closer and speak to her while she waited but it seemed the guards would never allow it. Besides she might just step on him without noticing. For now he would wait.

Timothy found a nearby crate on the side of the street and sat down to rest. It seemed the king had been summoned quickly and there was a conversation between him and the goddess. Overall it seemed to go quite well, this Goddess Jenna being uncharacteristically civil and lenient with the humans below her even compared to the nicest goddesses he know about from history. What exactly was her motivation? It was clear she could just wipe everyone out, she had the power.

Even Aldaney the youngest goddess he knew about was violent if angered. Though that might have been due to her status as goddess of war. Jenna did seem younger still which one would think makes her more likely to throw tantrums. This didn't seem to be the case as the conversation went on which was both confusing and hopeful.

The conversation ended suddenly and the goddess turned around to leave. Sensing his opportunity to meet her he stood up. Something clearly went wrong however and he saw Jenna's face twist in anger. She turned around to face the king again as she literally caught on fire. The fury and rage was clear in her voice. Whatever had been said on top of that castle had actually enraged her. Timothy's heart almost leapt out of his body as he saw her mannerisms reflect her inner state. Were they all about to die because of that arrogant king?

Then another miracle, the great goddess Jenna further cementing herself as an enigma among her kind. With clear and obvious difficulty the little goddess calmed herself down. The air hissed with the falling snow hitting her flames until they suddenly were snuffed out. She took several deep breaths and then dismissed the king and whatever insult he had said without another thought.

The self control he had just witnessed only further cemented Timothy's need to worship this goddess. That was clearly a moment when she could have obliterated the entire castle, yet she displayed self control to such a degree that she forgave an insult from a human. This almost concerned him in the other direction: to be disrespected so by mortals and not kill them was almost too ungoddesslike. Unless it was all part of an act? Well that didn't make sense either. If he rage had been genuine why wouldn't her forgiveness have been as well?

Timothy was snapped back to the moment as the goddess was taking another step. She mentioned something about golems, a strange word to him, before she took another step. Her massive foot lifted into the sky and came down with a thundering boom. The crowd had split but that step shook many of them to the ground. He had to meet her! Now was his chance!

"Goddess Jenna!" he shouted. "Down here!"

She didn't hear him. He had to run in front of her then and get her attention that way. Even if it meant she stepped on him the chance to meet her was worth the risk of ending up crushed underfoot. Quickly he dashed down the side of the road ahead of her leaving the crowd behind.

Her next step came down a hundred feet behind him and the thunderous impact sent him flying forward to sprawl onto the street as stones scattered into the air. Perhaps the main street was a bad idea after all. Thinking quickly an idea came to him. He could run down a side street as the goddess walked down the main one, then he could shout up at her without his life ending like a bug on the bottom of a boot.

Putting his plan into action Timothy jumped up and ran through an ally into the side street, another step from Jenna almost sending him flying again. He managed to keep his footing however and continued his mad dash, shouting up at her between breaths.

"Please Goddess Jenna! Here!"

It was no use, either she was ignoring him or didn't hear him. His dream was quickly slipping from his grasp and he wondered if life would be worth living without seeing it fulfilled. Luckily for him a savior presented themselves. There in the main street a knight was riding a horse hot on the goddess's heels.

When this knight shouted up at the goddess it was apparently enough to get her attention. She stopped and turned around to speak to him. She would probably only be occupied for a minute at most. But that was all Timothy needed.

With one final sprint he dashed through another alley and into the main street again.

"Wait Goddess!"

Timothy almost collapsed from the exertion he had put his body through. With all his heart he prayed that this would be enough to get her attention. He prayed to her that she would notice him. Barely able to stand between gasps he looked up at her face high above. It was dizzying how tall she was, her legs like tall towers and her body taller than the highest steeple of the temple. Her head almost hung in the clouds with her flowing hair like a majestic tapestry.

She turned her head and looked down at him, her gaze stunning him with its intensity. Her brilliant violet eyes priced his very soul and made his heart skip a beat. He had the attention of a goddess, the question now being if it was the biggest mistake of his life. Her mouth moved and her voice boomed down over him like a crushing weight.

"Well what is it?"
