Arc 1: Kingdom Goddess - Chapter 4

Thankfully my walk to the castle was unaccompanied by attacks of any kind. Even the king and mages of the royal court could identify that open conflict in the bounds of their own city was folly. It also probably helped that I had their leader with me. This didn't deter me from making calculations inside my head on escape routes should I be attacked. Considering my size there would be a few houses stepped on if I was to run for it. The other option was standing and taking whatever attacks they threw at me and I sure hoped it didn't come to that.

The streets below were pretty narrow, probably only the width of a single foot. This was of course pretty wide for actual humans, its just that they weren't built for really big people. There was an even bigger street that I had walked to and was journeying down now. That would be the main street, a highway of sorts that led from the gates to the castle and the center of the city. Walking down this was much easier for me as it was at least as wide as my shoulders, giving me the chance to walk straight. It was like walking a tightrope, except instead of just falling onto the ground if I toppled I would crush lots of buildings and who knows how many people. That would be unacceptable of course.

Miya spoke up inside me.

"Jenna. What will happen if they attack you? Isn't this dangerous?"

I simply smirked and thought back to her.

"I can take any attack they'll dish out don't worry. Not to mention they aren't that stupid. I'm sure they realize if they attacked me now I could wipe out this whole city including the king."

"Would you really do that?" Miya asked worried.

"Of course not!" I replied indignantly.

The mage Illiad spoke up from where he was standing on my floating book. He was still tense but seemed to be acutely interested in watching me.

"Is something wrong goddess Jenna? Those are fascinating expressions."

My eyes snapped back onto him and a frown came over my face. I wasn't even going to dignify that with a response. Besides the major concern right now was looking where my feet were landing. Down below on the street everyone had vacated the street sure, but there was still small stands here and there where people might be hiding. Thanks to my goddess vision I could see every human's soul even through objects, so all I had to do was keep vigilant on where they were.

The couple dozen or so steps it took to reach the castle seemed to go on forever, the tense vibe getting to me. Of course it made sense for everyone to cower in their homes as a titaness walked through their city, but the pure aura of fear permeated the very air itself. The swirling snow also made it difficult to see with my eyes. To correct this I initiated a anti-snow barrier around myself. IT was a simple release of heat from my entire body like an aura that also kept my hair from being too messed up with the snowflakes. All of the snow simply melted before it landed on me.

Illiad noticed immediately and ruffled his robe. He looked like he was about to say something but held his tongue.

With a final step my foot thundered down in front of the castle gates, my other foot booming down right next to the first. To my great surprise there were several knights standing in front of the gate, clutching their weapons with shaking hands as their entire body trembled. None of them looked like they wanted to be there, but their loyalty to their liege was something they were willing to lay their lives down for. In honor of that I'll try my very best not to traumatize them any further.

"I said to clear the streets "I said down to them gently.

One of the knights stood forward, a colorful plume on his helmet indicating rank of some kind. His voice shook as much as his body.

"S-State your name and y-your b-business. We've b-been instructed that none s-shall pass."

In response I lowered the floating book so that it settled gently on the ground and allowing its passenger to step off of it. I then looked down at the mage expectantly.

"Why don't you explain it to them?"

Illiad stepped down off the book onto the street and cleared his throat. He then walked towards the knights and fluffed out his flowing robe, the snow already starting to muddle up his pretty elf hair.

"This is the goddess Jenna. She is here to meet his highness the king. Unfortunately I don't see a way to persuade her otherwise."

The knight looked at the mage and nodded nervously. Confirmation from his direct superior did seem to ease his terror, as one would expect. At least he wasn't responsible anymore was his line of thought probably.

"W-Whatever you say Master Westbow."

"With that settled I'll see myself in" I said quickly.

Ignoring any further protests from the humans below I simply lifted up my left foot and swung it over the castle curtain wall and into the bailey. There were lots of panicking people in there that started running around like insects when my massive foot appeared and boomed down inside. I paid them no mind and lifted my other foot over the wall and settled it down where there weren't any scampering people.

Now standing before me was the castle proper: its great shield walls keeping its inner courtyard from my reach unless I wanted to break something. It was actually pretty impressive how tall it all was, the wall itself reaching above my knees and some of the towers reaching above my waist. It would likely be much more impressive if I was human sized of course. Regardless there was now the issue that the king was somewhere inside this building and I was too big to fit in there.

I crouched down and put my hands on my knees, looming over the courtyard and the little people within it. The snow was still falling all around except for the area immediately under me. Now blocked from the sky the snow didn't fall there.

"Hey down there! Get busy people! I'm here to see the king so get him out here while I still have patience ok?"

My happy little smile did little to ease those below after that vague threat. To the credit of the guards of the castle order was difficult to keep when panic set in. They did their best to keep the nobility and such corralled to safe places inside the castle and out of my eyesight at least. Some of these guards were likely running off to the king right now to protect him. Weither they would bring him to me I wasn't sure.

"If you don't bring me to the king I will tear this castle apart to find him!" I added in as extra motivation.

Another issue I noticed was the situation unfolding behind me at the main castle gate. There was a large crowd gathering there now, a crowd of concerned citizens of course. They had come to protest me being allowed into the city and the inaction of the city guard. There were probably a hundred people gathered by now and they threatened to overwhelm the knights. The fact I wasn't violent obviously gave them a certain amount of bravery.

"Goddesses are as fond of spectacle as I expected them to be" a voice from behind me said.

It was the elf mage Illiad. He had left the knights at the gate and walked through into the bailey as well. For whatever reason he wasn't afraid of me and that actually concerned me. In fact he was so unafraid he walked under me through my legs, walking right past my feet and towards the castle.

"Seeing as you're behaving yourself I'll go ensure your meeting with the king takes place. Please wait here O Goddess."

"What about the situation out there?" I asked looking at the gate.

Illiad shrugged. "The knights will take care of it. That's what they're for."

He walked into the castle without so much as another backwards glance. It was probably his expectation that if the crowd did break through that either I would stop them or he just didn't care what happened. Regardless of his outlook the situation out there was reaching a breaking point.

Instead of standing there and watching a potential tragedy I decided to do something myself. Closing my eyes I summoned forth mana into the ground between my feet and conjured two stone golems using the bricks of the road. I then pointed to the knights outside the gate.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

"Gently assist the knights."

The golems heeded my command and immediately took lumbering steps towards the gate. Their construction was much sturdier than the one I had made previously as these were made of actual stone. Too bad their creation took a chunk out of the street.

All of the people both inside and out were frozen in awe as these two behemoths were materialized between my feet. They weren't entirely sure how to react to them while they were being formed and just watched. Once they started moving in response to my command however everyone backed further into their hiding place inside the castle.

As for the people outside the castle gates in the crowd, they immediately backed several steps away and gave the knights much needed breathing room. The knights themselves simply stumbled back in shock and allowed the golems to trundle up.

Both golems positioned themselves in the area under the gatehouse and spread their arms in a clear "no one passes" stance. Once they were in their poses they made no further movements.

The knights that had just been swarmed by the crowed took this as a blessing and lined up again in front of the golems. They were confused why this monstrous goddess was suddenly helping them but they weren't going to look a gift horse in the mouth at the moment.

"You heard us the first time" one of the knights said firmly. "There are to be no civilians inside the castle at this time."

He then looked up at me nervously and cleared his throat, some sweat on his forehead despite the cold.

"The erm- goddess is currently in a meeting with his highness and wishes not to be disturbed. As she came to our city peacefully we have no right to turn her away."

This brought more protest from the crowd but there was nothing they could do about it. They were also deeply curious about what was happening of course, and its not like my side of the conversation would be able to be kept from them.

Or could it?

Yeah there was probably some silencing spell like Cone of Silence or something similar I could try. But honestly this conversation should probably be public knowledge anyway. There wasn't any hiding myself after all.

My thoughts were interrupted as one of the knights from the gate walked up to me. He stopped a fair distance away from the heel of my right foot and seemed to be waiting for me to notice him. Sort of shyly wanting attention like a small child or dog would.

I turn on my heels and put my arms to my sides, shortly after lifting my left hand up to put on my hip.

"Yes? What is it?"

He jumped in surprise as my voice boomed down at him, clearly not expecting such a laid back tone. Immediately after I spoke he collapsed to the ground in a heap, bowing to me and sputtering an apology.

"Oh great goddess Jenna!" He started. "P-Please forgive your humble servant for ever doubting of your existence! Please have mercy on me!"

Well this wasn't the response I expected. I mean it was expected as far as the groveling went, but the apology confused me. Calming him down would need to be step one if I wanted to find out what he was talking about.

I cooed down to him like a mother comforting her child. I also crouched a little with my hands on my knees.

"There there. No need for all that. Goddess forgives you."

This made him stop blubbering and lift his head to look up at me with confusion and fear in his eyes.

"R-Really?" he asked in disbelief.

I just nodded with a warm smile. "Mhm! I'm not mad at you. What's your name?"

Now the man was groveling and blubbering for an entirely different reason. His fear replaced with deep gratitude as his overwhelming emotions shifted and passed through him. It was quite the embarrassing display to be sure, though I don't think he cared about how many people were currently watching him. When he finally recovered enough to speak he sat up and looked up at my face high above.

"M-My name is Quintrell Rabben oh goddess." He then looked down ashamed. "The one who so threatened your servant Quarely Mettlelin..."

Threatened Quarely? This caused me to pause and think back. What was he talking about?

Oh... That guy huh?

Honestly I didn't even remember that whole ordeal but now I did. There had been some situation with Quarely a short while ago where he kept praying and begging me to save him from some knight that was trying to kill him. It was super annoying and I remember being really pissed. No one was hurt from what I remember.

A frown had come onto my face while I thought and this caused the unease to return to this Quintrell. He probably was realizing I was remembering the event myself and worried I would change my mind. His whole body was tense and he was holding his breath.

After another moment I stood back up to full height and returned to my previous pose. My expression relaxed into a more neutral one.

"Yeah I remember now." I said nonchalantly. "You rolled up on my boy Quarely and tried to have him killed if I recall."

Quintrell's expression was a mix of fear and confusion, likely due to my choice of words. He remained kneeled and bowed again.

"Yes goddess! I beg you forgive me for my evil deed!"

I let out a sigh. "Yeah I'll still forgive you Quintrell. Honestly no one was hurt so it didn't end up mattering much. I don't actually care anymore how much you pissed me off. You know I exist now and will be a very good boy from here on out right?"

"Yes goddess!" he replied. "Thank you goddess!"

With that situation taken care of I turned around to face the castle again. I had sensed several people walking in my direction for a while now and they were about to arrive. They were exiting the castle main building and into the open air rooftop garden. Of course there were only dormant trees and snow in this garden now but I'm sure outside of winter it was very beautiful.

The garden was about sixty or so feet off the ground and wasn't even at waist height. This meant I would either have to continue standing or sit down. If I sat down then the garden would be at face level but honestly I wanted to loom over them and look down to sink in my position. Call me egotistical if you want but in my defense a goddess needs to be high and mighty. Besides there wasn't a lot of space to sit down in the bailey without my feet causing problems and crunching stuff.

As for as who was in the group there was the mage Illiad of course, but there were at least six other people besides him. There were at least three generic looking castle guards, all decked out in full plate with swords at their hips. Then there was another robed figure, a human man who was clearly another mage of some kind. The last person was easily some kind of advisor: and old man with flowing white hair.

In the middle of this group was a pair of middle aged people: male and female. Clearly by their regal attire and crowns these were the king and queen. Both of them looked very nervous to be walking across the roof towards the titanic little girl but they had no choice. Besides their positions made it a requirement to handle diplomatic situations exactly like this. Surely they were relieved this goddess could be spoken to.

I waited patiently and silently for them to approach and speak first. It's a good diplomatic tactic, letting your opponent make the first move so you could counter easier. My arms did cross across my chest though which was a defensive pose I didn't really think about.

Once they had made it to the edge of the garden the old man stepped forward and bowed, gesturing to the king as he did so.

"May I present his highness King Alphonse Ferenik and his wife Queen Sashui Ferenik."

He then turned around to do the same gesture towards me.

"I introduce the honored goddess Jenna. Visitor from the province of Voorhaul."

The group were all shivering slightly in the snow, the flakes falling down and covering them in white flecks. Even though they were wearing furs and coats of various kinds it was pretty cold out. It was clear none of them wanted to be out here as they were quite used to the comforts of a nice warm room due to being nobility of whatever description.

The king was first to speak and muttered under his breath. He held his hands to his face and blew into them to try and warm them up.

"Blasted snow! Why did this have to happen to happen outside during the damn winter?"

Smug bastard. Royalty piss me off intrinsically for some reason and this was no exception. Maybe if he had his comfort he'd get the picture better.

Lifting my left hand I summon fire in my palm, the flames easily the size of a bonfire.

"Maybe I can warm you up Mr. King?"

Without another word I tossed the bonfire onto the castle roof prompting panic from those standing there. Both mages took no action however as they could clearly see the trajectory wasn't aimed at them. Thus the bonfire landed in front of the group and continued cackling and heating up the surrounding area. All the snow melted and everyone relaxed feeling the heat warming their bodies.

"W-Well thank you goddess" the king Alphonse said still shocked. "Its good to see manners aren't below your kind."

My arms returned to being crossed over my chest and I narrowed my eyes looking down at him.

"My kind? You mean goddesses right? If the information I have is right there hasn't been one around for a thousand years."

The old man advisor spoke with a bow. "Yes Goddess Jenna. It has indeed been a thousand years according to our history."

I nodded as he spoke and then put my hands on my hips.

"Well I'm much different then those goddesses you've heard about from the stories. Although I do own this kingdom now!"

I laughed a very fake laugh though I did try my best to make it believable. Then I pointed directly at Alphonse.

"That's right! I own you now Mr. King! And that means I own the entire kingdom as well!"

Everyone standing there and probably behind me in the city as well stood there in brief shock. They were in disbelief over what had just been said even if they thought it would happen in the back of their minds. Obviously the goddess would claim ownership over the kingdom right? What else could they have expected?

Alphonse sputtered in protest after finally recovering his senses.

"Now wait just a damn moment! You can't just walk up to my castle and claim ownership over me and my kingdom!"

In response I leaned forward with my hands still on my hips. I now loomed directly over them and the fire went out in an instant. There was a smugly grin on my face and a gleam in my eyes.

"Casus belli: The divine right to rule! If you kings can have this so called divine right why the hell wouldn't a goddess?"

My grin turns into a full on smile, slowing teeth as my eyes narrow in an expression of glee. The kind of face one makes when they know they're completely unassailable in their point.

None of the people standing before me said a word in protest as the winter winds swept around them in the absence of the bonfire. The snow had stopped falling and their shocked faces started to redden. For whatever reason however the asshole elf wasn't shocked in the slightest.

Alphonse started to speak. "Now see here-"

"Na-na boo-boo!" I cut him off. "Fair's fair!"

I stuck out my tongue and put my arms over my belly.

"I'm the offical goddess of this kingdom now like it or not. Don't worry I'm not dethroning you or anything. You can keep on doing your king stuff without concern for me smiting you. Anyway that's all I wanted to tell you."

With that said I turned around and stepped over to the curtain wall, completely ignoring any further statements from those on top of the castle.
