Chapter 28: Cat & the 3 Pillars

Mother couldn’t physically see the exit wound she made on the man - she did appear to be behind him so her view wasn’t optimal for that - so she was quite surprised that the bastard could even talk. Causing her to raise an eyebrow… Although it wasn’t as if she could actually see through her eyelids, anyway, so she could only be more confused due to knowing she skewered him.

Yet he wasn’t only talking; he didn’t even spit up blood.

“Ara?”

While the holy Mother was confused, Photon was tense. Right in front of his eyes - where the wound should have been gushing with blood - Navy’s chest seemed to be purposefully warped in order to blur the injury he had received. It instantly seemed that this fight was far more difficult than he assumed.

“You… You’re that hatchling midget from Gaia & Leviathan aren’t you? I ask because I happen to know them quite well…”

His words shocked both Photon & Mother. For Photon it was mostly due to his tone of voice having completely abandoned that lighthearted singsong tone. He was certainly still not completely abbonding that jovial tone but something about his change came across as being far more menacing.

Though Mother wasn’t planning to reveal anything except her soon-to-be signature kind smile - she replied only after harshly slashing her sword through his side.

“Yes but I’m not quite sure they know y-”

“Oh they know me very well...”

She stopped speaking after retching her blade from him. Not due to any form of attack that he made against her and definitely not to his words, they didn’t even register in her mind, but instead due to seeing that her attack had absolutely no effect. Due to her closed eyes she wasn’t exactly able to understand exactly what happened (her method of viewing the world being more akin to mana-based echolocation) but there was someone who did.

The hero could only throw his lance aside as he witnessed that sword, indeed, cleave through the mysterious human man. Yet no wound was made as reality itself seemed to abhor the idea of him being injured - chosing instead to warp something beyond even space to save the man. Photon had no clue how this worked nor what exactly happened.

But it was clear they’d need to forget everything they knew about fighting if they hoped to ever win against the being in front of them.

At this point he was positive that this was no human.

Mother herself turned to look toward her sword as if ensuring that her green aura did indeed produce a blade on the otherwise dull weapon. Her inexperience thus shined through due to this moment of befuddlement as the wind around them howled as if laughing at her. This was clearly a moment that the skilled Navy wouldn’t relinquish.

“That does make me feel a little bad about what I’m going to do to you~.” < Navy>

Those words followed up by Navy turning his free hand to grab Alice’s neck, her eyes widening under her eyelids as she felt the power coursing through him, lifting her up using his vice grip. Fear flashed through the young goddess as he wrapped his unbreakable hand around her throat - it wasn’t due to being vulnerable but rather she felt some instinctive revulsion from his touch. Like the feeling that a rabbit likely feels when they see the face of a fox push through the entrance of their den.

“[I’mma Plant Me a Dumbass Tree]~!”

His white cloak flared back up around his bare torso - muscles across his body tensing - as he lifted the dragoness up from the ground. Turning his body to add all the force he could when he threw her over and into the dirt below. Her head easily caved in the earth with an earth shattering bang which made Photon wince up… Though he wasn’t really inclined to help the girl after her smarmy comment.

Fortunately he was gracious enough to let go after finishing that rather unusually named special move; using his now free hand to pull at the back of his white cloak. A hood formed in his hand which he promptly used to cover his head. Now the only thing revealed was the fringe of his half-half hair as well as those bicoloured eyes.

The makeup on his face seemed to almost gleam making him truly look like some kind of clown from someone's nightmares.

Sadly it seemed like a night terror that the hero needed to deal with.

Shockingly the Navy jumped away instead of charging toward the hero, however, the cause soon was revealed as a field of diamond spikes soon erupted out from the earth. This magic trick wasn’t finished as magna soon burst out the ground. Those spikes respond by flying without care about who they should piece.

Thankfully Photon has already taken the fight away from any life (that he cared about) while his shield was more than sturdy enough to take the attack head on. Navy simply kicked the bottom of his bident to have it spin around his fingers - effectively forming his own rudimentary shield that caused those spikes to be harmless redirected away. Something that Photon quickly took note of.

Some confidence returned to the hero as he called upon the clouds above to send a bold of golden lightning to land into his awaiting palm. That raw energy formed a javelin of holy wrath that he hurled right towards the Navy once the wave of spikes stopped flying toward him. Causing the bolt to roar with power.

Sadly he was no inexperienced Alice who would forget there was an opponent right in front of him. Easily dealing with the bolt of lightning by slamming his bident into the ground and releasing it from his grasp as the attack hit it. Letting that holy energy dissipate into the ground as he placed his foot under the gap between the bident's blades; kicking the polearm up where his hand swiped it from the air.

“Guess I should add a basic understanding of the world in his already long portfolio…”

That hero's wit was regrettably overlooked by the world in favour of the True God angrily retching her head from the earth. Despite her internal feelings… She showed a perfectly calm (twitching) kind smile as she lifted her sword to point straight at the sky as if arrogantly challenging it to a fight. Something she indeed planned ever since Azura dragon managed to escape from her through that celestial canvas.

“You remind me of a certain uncle I have… I HATE THAT UNCLE!”

[Sukaisābā]!

The heavens themselves seemed to quake as she severed the sky in half with a seemingly simple downward slash of her sword.

“Wow that was almost scary~!”

Sadly it was a pretty useless technique when someone wasn’t in the air… Since they could easily step aside thus rendering it useless. Something Navy obviously did which he followed up by kicking off the ground toward Alice while thrust his bident; once again using every opening he could to make that young goddess’ life a living hell.

She obviously didn’t plan to let her guard down again so stepped back in order to have enough time to move her sword to receive his weapon. In return he caught the blade between his two prongs and, with an expert flick of the wrist, sent her sword flying through the air. Mother didn’t even have time to bask in the glory of his technique before receiving a foot to her gut.

To her shock her scales, once again, cracked as she was sent flying backwards into one of the many mountainous piles of rubble that the hero & clown had produced.

“Amateur~!”

His mocking voice wrung through the newly formed mountain range as Photon summoned his lance to his hand (once again) to charge toward his foe. Navy Quickly moved in only to suddenly step back as Photon attempted to bash him with his shield once more. A confident smirk danced under his hood as he blocked the lance with his own bident - fully utilising its ability to capture other weapons.

Unknown to him was the fact this actually made Photon smile under his own helm; the hero actually dropped his weapon causing Navy to widen his eyes in shock. Shock that soon became literal as the massive armoured fist flew right towards his face. Roaring with thunderous power even before it hit.

That fist contained more than enough power to pop Navy’s skull like it was grape so it was hardly surprising that the villain tried to dodge but, ironically, he sealed his own fate. Having moved so close in an attempt to nullify Photon’s advantage at range resulted in him being unable to dodge the fatal blow… Or at least Photon believed it would be fatal.

His bet proved to be wrong.

Despite the elemental fist impacting his head; his entire head seemed to warp as the rogue jumped far away from the hero after spitting out a plume of Navy figure that still did no damage. At least it was enough to act as a smoke screen as Navy narrowed his eyes at Photon while resting his own pole-arm onto the ground. Though the fact that he got out of that unwounded made the hero feel quite grim.

That failure didn’t matter too much to him in the grand scheme; he refused to give up when he had so many people relying on him… People he promised to grant a better life.

His thoughts pulled away as a wave of energy washed over both of them, their powers waned under the pressure of that power, as the world itself seemed to grow blindingly vibrant. Both their eyes drifted towards a pair of magenta eyes that glowed with wrath. That familiar figure of Alice was in a similarly familiar stance as…

*clink*

[Ketteitekina Hikiwake]

The world itself seemed to split in half for a second until it snapped back - Photon’s armour creaked under the power of that slash as he couldn’t help grinding his teeth in anger at the dumb girl. Clearly she didn’t care who got injured as there was no doubt that such an attack may have erased the bovine-kin if not being pointed toward the newly forced ocean view. A glance at Navy revealed that he was also completely unaffected by the attack; merely spitting crimson flames that scorched the stone ground.

“Did you attack that blue haired human girl with a similarly cowardly attack~?”

Alice’s angry visage soon transformed into one of bewilderment than true unbridled rage since the bastard wasn’t even wrong about his assumption.

“WHY WON’T YOU JUST DIE!”

Her humanoid form even began to slip as the teeth in her mouth became more pointy & plentiful; golden exterior gills glowing on her cheeks. She also seemed to… Shrink? That was soon taken away as reality cracked like glass before completely shattering with the fitting sound of broken glass. Revealing a totally normal alice standing beside Navy with her finger pointed right at his temple.

A glowing ball of energy atop her pointer finger that soon exploded out into a beam of piercing energy - one that should have killed Navy yet once again just blurred through. Now that she had her eyes open she could even see it happen for herself. Although there was no room for thinking as she attempted to grab Navy’s head but found him grabbing her wrist instead.

The man rammed Alice with his shoulder before utilising that position to throw her onto his back; then transition into hurling him onto the ground in front of him.

Once more he grabbed his weapon then jumped backward despite Photon merely taking this time to restore some of his stamina. Seeing that aggressive figure jump away, without being threatened, obviously caught the hero's attention. Raising a brow once again only to notice something he had overlooked in the heat of battle…

Once again Navy coughed up some embers as his breath grew ragged - his free hand resting on his chest as Photon even realised he was actually using that bident to support his weight. It was also clear that the amount of damage he was doing had decreased significantly. This made one thing very clear.

It seemed that Navy also realised what the hero was thinking as he let out a long sigh, turning his gaze toward Alice, as he turned away from the pair.

“Seems one of you is at least good… We will meet again.”

Alice wasn’t about to accept that, though.

“You… You… You're running away you scaredy cat!”

Unlike Photon - who was not pleased with the racist comment - Navy just let out a chuckle as those navy flames seemed to puncture a flaming doorway into some strange unknown realm. The sounds of creaking & banging metal beyond the unusual wormhole as even Alice felt the heat blistering his scales. That cloaked figure seemed unbothered as he walked into the flames.

“Oh, we will meet again princess, I am not the one who does the running… I am merely the one who watches those who watch. The thing that comes to everyone and everything that comes to exist; an unceremonious arrival that you will learn to fear. Best watch over your shoulder as I will retrieve the blood debt you have created through your little power trip…”

“We’ll see who pays…”

For a second that cloaked figure paused, tilting his head back to look over his shoulder with his indigo eye flaring up with bluish-purple flame as it watched her in amusement.

“I will show you… That even the infinite has an end…”

That door collapsed leaving the knight and scholar staring at the rogue’s last location in shock...
