Chapter 9: Captured

Chapter 9: Captured

After being stranded in the middle of downtown Banoi due to our car cutting off we were able to get helped by a fellow survivor who was able to give us another car after helping him with his friends. We suffered a setback but now that we got another car we were finally able to get to the doctor.

As we began driving off I heard several gun shots fire from behind us. "What the hell was that?" - Dale asked as we heard several shots fire off in the background. As I looked in the rear view mirror I saw a jeep stop with several armed men getting out in front of the place we just left. A few moments later they broke in and began firing shots inside the building. "They broke into the place we just left and are shooting in there!" - Ana said as she looked back in horror. As I was driving I looked in the mirror in horror as I knew there was nothing I could do without putting everyone here at risk.

"He just finished helping us too...he saved us and even gave us a car...and they still ended up dying anyways.." - Halima said as she had tears in her eyes. "He died doing the right thing...that's what matters. He died after helping us...and for that he will go out in good spirits. He died so we could live." - I said as I kept driving. "We have to make it worth it then. We have to get off the island at all costs. He saved us so we need to do just that. Make his sacrifice worth it." - Jean said as he looked at me with anger in his eyes.

As we kept driving we reached the other side of town and were getting close to the Rays clinic. "Alright Dale, tell your friend that we are getting close and to be ready." - I said as I was already feeling frustrated. "Dr Van! Dr Van, are you there?" - Dale asked as he tuned into the channel on the walkie talkie. "Yes I am here! What's going on?" - Dr Van said. 'We are about to arrive at the clinic!" - Dale said. "Alright, I'm sending my guards out there to escort you in. I have the area guarded by a gate so when you arrive just press the green button you see at the entrance and my men will be there in the front waiting for you guys." - Dr Van said."

As we pulled up to the gate I pulled down the window and pressed the green button and a few moments later a few armed guards came out as the gate opened. Once the gate opened we drove in and from what we saw this area was visibly different from the rest of Banoi. It was way cleaner and looked as if this area was shielded from the outbreak. It seemed as if this area was guarded for a reason and was able to withstand the outbreak. As we parked and stepped out of our car the guards came up and asked to search us.

"Wait a second guys. We can't allow you in with those weapons on you." - the guard said. "Dr Van sent us. I'm a friend of his." - Dale said as he showed the guard his ID. "That's good and everything but I still can't let you in with those weapons. Its protocol." - the guard said once again as Dr Van came outside. "Woah woah woah. These guys are with me sir." - Dr Van said as he intervened. "I'm just following protocol sir. These guys have weapons on them." - the guard said. "These guys are friends of mine. They are okay." - Dr Van said as he looked at us. "Well alright sir. My apologies for the inconvenience." - the guard said as he stepped back.

"Well you guys made it. I'm glad and I really appreciate you guys for coming out here." - Dr Van said. "Well whatever it is that you need to do needs to be done fast. We went through hell just to get here so let's not take up too much time." - I said as I was mad and frustrated. "What's the matter with him? Did I say something wrong?" - Dr Van said as he chuckled nervously. "They just witnessed a friend get killed as they left and couldn't do anything about it so everyone is in a sensitive state right now." - Dale said. "Well I'm sorry to hear that. I didn't know that. I don't wanna take up too much of your time so if you guys could follow me inside we could talk about what's gonna happen and get started!" - Dr Van said as he pointed inside.

"Lets go." - Ana said as she began walking in. As I followed the rest of the group inside the hospital was like something out of this world. There was so much equipment that I've never seen before and there were so many survivors being treated for their injuries. "Wow I had no idea there were so many survivors." - Ana said as she looked at the chaos. "Yeah, these are all the people me and my men have saved through the radio. Since the outbreak began we have had so many calls. The amount of calls we have received have caused the signal to go in and out and it's not just for here. It's been like that for the entire island." - Dr Van said as he walked us through the clinic.

"So that's why my radio was struggling to get a signal back at the hotel." - Jean said as he scoffed. "Yeah, my apologies for that sir. I didn't expect things to get this bad across the island but with the government out of the picture and many of the authorities that have gone under we have been doing everything we can to try and pick up the pieces they left us." - Dr Van said as he brought us to the room where he works at. As we walked in the room we saw tubes with what appeared to be blood samples in them.

"So this is what you've been up to during the outbreak huh?" - Dale said as he looked at everything on the table. "Yeah, with doctors across the island and even in neighboring islands scrambling to find an answer to this outbreak I've been in this room 24/7 trying everything I can to find an answer. Here on the table are blood samples from several of the survivors here at the clinic. We have been testing all of these blood samples to see if we could find anything that could help us with potentially finding a cure. Sadly we have had no luck." - Dr Van said.

"So let me guess. This is where we come into play." - I asked. "Exactly. When Dale informed me that you all were immune I could not wait for you guys to get here. I felt a sense of relief as this could potentially be life saving! The fact that you guys getting bitten and not showing any symptoms is astonishing! The mortality rate of this virus that scientists are now calling the Nova Contagion is off the charts. It is estimated that most people that contract the virus start feeling symptoms within minutes. The fact that you guys were bitten over 24 hours ago and have not been affected is gaming changing! This could be the key to stopping this hell hole that we live in now." - Dr Van said.

"Well let's get started already so we can get out of here." - I said as I was annoyed and frustrated. "Angel, can I talk to you for a second outside of the room?" - Ana said as she began to notice that I was getting impatient. I walked out of the room and sat on the chair in the lounge nearby. "Well alright. Do you wanna tell me what's going on with you? Back at the fire department you seemed okay with all of this and now you seem like you don't even wanna be here. What's going on?" - Ana asked as she sat down next to me.

"It's what happened back there. The guy that saved us, he died and I didn't stop. I just kept driving. I froze and didn't know what to do. He saved me and I didn't do the same in return. How am I supposed to be okay with that?" - I said as I placed my hands on my face covering my eyes. "It's not your fault Angel. We had no idea that this would happen to them. We didn't know and even if we stopped and turned around we would have been too late as they were already in the room by then. We wouldn't have been able to change the outcome." - Ana said as she was rubbing my shoulders.

"It's not only that but the fact that we went through hell to get here and the doctor is only worried about getting our blood. I have a feeling that you're right. I know I was feeling good about this at first but now I just don't know." - I said as I was starting to have doubts in my mind. "I get that. I really do but we are here now and remember what he proposed. If we do this we can get the boat and get off the island. We are this close to leaving. I think if the guy knew that him giving us the car would mean that we not only could be saving lives and potentially ending the apocalypse but also us making it off the island I think he would take that chance every time. He may have died but we are here now. We have to make it worth it." - Ana said as she was rubbing my shoulders. "Yeah, you may be right. Thanks for the talk Ana. I really appreciate it." - I said as Ana and I locked eyes for a moment.

"We should go back inside so we can get started." - Ana said as she got up. "Alright." - I said as I got up and followed her inside. As we walked inside the room we could see the doctor checking on Halima's leg. "Does this hurt?" - Dr Van said as he was applying pressure on different spots of the leg to find a diagnosis. "Yeah it hurts really bad." - Halima said as she groaned in a bit of pain. "Well it seems that she suffered a contusion on her fibula. Fortunately it won't need surgery to be healed but it will take time to go away." - Dr Van said. "So what can you do that will help her with the pain right now?" - Jean asked. "I can give her a shot on her leg that will bring the pain down and give her a splint to wear on her leg that will help her walk." - Dr Van said.

Jean and I looked at Halima as we were awaiting her answer. "You can do it. If it will make this pain go down then I can deal with that. I've put up with worse at this point." - Halima said. "Well alright then. I will take that as a yes so I will get the shot for you." - Dr Van said as he prepared the shot for Halima. "Alright you may feel a bit of pressure and a pinch but it should subside in a few seconds." - Dr Van said as he was about to give her the shot. "Okay. I'm ready." - Halima said as she braced for the shot. Dr Van began administering the shot and as that was happening I could see Halima grunting and biting on her teeth as she felt pain in the bone. "Alright I'm gonna place the splint on your leg now." - Dr Van said as he began placing the splint on her leg. "You're all done. You should begin to notice some differences in pain level shortly." - Dr Van said as he finished.

"Thank you Dr Van. I tried everything I could to help her but unfortunately that fall was too much." - Jean said in relief. "Well it's a good thing you guys came when you did. She dodged a major bullet with that fall. She should start to feel better. I'm gonna give you guys a few moments before we begin taking your blood samples." - Dr Van said. As Dr Van left the room all of us began talking and thinking about what to do after we leave. "We went through all of that to get here. What are we thinking once we leave?" - Dale asked. "Well I'm looking forward to getting on that boat and getting the fuck out of here. I can't stand being on this island anymore." - I said as I wiped my head. "Well you guys are doing a good thing. I really appreciate it for you guys helping me and coming out here." - Dale said as he was about to exit the room.

"Wait where are you going?" - Halima asked. "I think it's time for me to go back to work. Before this outbreak I was also an assistant to Dr Van and I'd help him on his projects. I think with the current situation we are in it's time I do my part in helping." - Dale said. "You know you don't have to stay here. You could come with us and leave on the boat too." - Halima said as she looked upset. "I know but I don't think my time here is done yet. I think there is unfinished work I have to attend. It's been a wild ride guys. I appreciate it for helping me and saving me back at the hotel." - Dale said as he seemed grateful.

"No problem man. Thank you for helping us get in contact with Dr Van. We really appreciate it and won't let it go to waste." - Jean said as he reached out to shake Dale's hands. "Thank you Dale. Take care of yourself alright?" - I said as I shook hands with him as well. After shaking hands with all of us Dale said one last farewell and left the room. "He did good. He's a good guy. He could have left with us but decided to stay back. I respect that." - Jean said. "Yeah, he's a good guy." - I said as I sat down.

"Are you okay? I noticed that you weren't feeling so good back there." - Jean asked. "Yeah I will be fine. Just feeling exhausted and all of this might be catching up to me." - I said as I wiped the sweat off my head. "We will be off of this island soon. We are this close so hang on a bit longer." - Ana said as she comforted me.

A few moments later Dr Van walked into the room as he was ready to begin taking samples of our blood. "I don't mean to interrupt but are you guys ready for me to take your blood samples?" - Dr Van asked. All of us looked at each other as we realized that the moment was here and that we were one step closer to leaving the island. "Yeah we are ready. Let's go save some lives." - I said as I followed Dr Van. As the rest of the group followed we passed by all these rooms with high tech equipment being guarded by guards. As we arrived at the room to take our blood samples we saw these comfortable recliners.

"If you guys can please take a seat on these recliners I've provided for you we could get started!" - Dr Van said as he pointed towards the chairs. We walked in and took our seats as we felt the cold air enter the room. "Wow this feels great. I haven't felt this type of air in what feels like ages!" - Jean said as he felt relief. "Yeah you ain't kidding. This feels like paradise more than the resort does." - I said jokingly. "You guys seem very comfortable!" - Dr Van said with a smile as he prepared the equipment. "Well when you've been outside in the blazing heat as long as we have anything as simple as this feels like heaven." - Halima said as she was enjoying the recliner and cold air.

"Well I'm glad you guys are getting acclimated. Now that you guys are comfortable, why don't we get started with taking the blood sample shall we?" - Dr Van said as he put gloves on. As Dr Van began to take our blood samples all I could think about was the thought of getting on that boat and finally getting off the island. "I can't believe we are this close to getting off the island." - I said as I was starting to feel calm. "Yeah we came this far man. I'm not gonna miss this place whatsoever." - Ana said as she chuckled a bit. "I don't think any of us are." - Jean said in agreement.

"Alright I am all done taking all of your blood samples. Now I can start my experiments and observations in hopes that we can create a cure." - Dr Van said with a smile on his face. "Alright we held up our end of the deal. Where are the keys to the boat?" - I asked. "Oh yeah! About that, I don't think I can let you leave now." - Dr Van said as he had a deceiving smile on his face. "What the hell do you mean by that? We held up our end of the deal! - Ana said. "Yeah you did but with you guys being immune there is no guarantee that this blood sample will work. Special situations like this warrant further observation." - Dr Van said as he left the room and locked us inside the room.

"You mother fucker! I knew I shouldn't have trusted you!" - Ana said as she banged on the door. "Don't worry guys! It will all be over soon. With this I can now create a potential vaccine and be the hero in a situation for once!" - Dr Van said as he looked at us with a deceiving smile. "You better pray that I can't escape this room!" - I said as I looked at Dr Van dead in the eyes. "Well how do you plan on escaping if you won't be able to try?" - Dr Van said as he flipped a switch on the wall that caused a fog like smoke to enter the room. "Sweet dreams guys!" - Dr Van said as he ran off.

"You son of a bitch!" - I said as I punched the door. As the fog like smoke entered the room all of us began to think of a way to get out of here. "We need to get out of here!" - Ana said as she kept banging on the door. As too much smoke began to enter the room Ana started to feel woozy. "Guys...I'm not feeling too good..." - Ana said before passing out shortly after. "Ana!!!" I said as I began to cough due to the smoke. Shortly after Jean and Halima passed out due to the smoke. As I covered my face with my shirt I desperately tried to look for a way out of the room but eventually passed out due to the smoke.

After all this time it had turned out that the hunch that Ana had was true. We had found ourselves in a trap and with our blood out there in the hands of a piece of shit doctor we had no idea what could happen because of it. We found ourselves trapped inside the room. We were captured.
