Chapter 4: Lost Contact

Chapter 4: Lost Contact

Once again the circumstances that we've been presented with have called for us to go back out into a world full of the unknown. The two guys that tried to attack us when we were first brought to the safe house have stolen the radio and ran off. They could have been anywhere by now but judging by the note they left it doesn't seem like they got far. Plus the quickest way off the beach is the steps which lead directly to the resort. The radio was the only thing we have that gives us a connection to the outside world so we needed to go out there no matter what.

As we walked up the stairs towards the resort I was looking at Ana as I could tell by the look on her face that she was in disbelief that we would be back at the resort. "You okay? You look like you're thinking about a ton of stuff right now." - I said as I was feeling some sort of worry and concern coming from her. "Yeah, I'm okay. I'm just thinking about what happened last time we came up here. Things nearly went south. Just a bit worried that each time we come out we are risking things a bit further." - Ana said as she was a bit worried and concerned. "Well that radio is the one thing keeping us in contact with the outside world. With phone services likely down throughout the island this is the only thing we have left. I'm not even concerned about the guys. They dug their own graves but they have the one thing we need so we have to find them." - I said.

Ana looked at me and agreed knowing that we had no other choice but I still couldn't help but notice an ounce of concern coming from her. Once we arrived at the top of the stairs we began to walk by the pools looking around to see if there were any potential traces as to where the two guys might have gone. As we made it to the cabins Ana spotted something on the floor. "Hey! I found something!" - Ana said as she pointed towards two walkie talkies lying on the floor. "Oh shit, it's the walkie talkies that they took from us at the safe house. This is good news." - I said with a sigh of relief. "This means they didn't get that far. They still have to be around here." - Ana said as she looked around.

We continued to walk past the cabins but there was still no sight of the guys. Just a desolate and blood ridden resort. As we kept walking we started to spot something that might be the clue to finding out where the guys went. "Hold up, stop right here. Don't you see those blood prints on the floor? - I said as I pointed towards the ground. "Yeah, I see them. It looks like footprints." - Ana said. "Let's follow it to see where it takes us." - I said as I began to follow the prints. Ana nodded and began to follow right behind me.

As we kept following the prints we began to pass many of the cabins and pools that looked to be torn apart by the infection that has spread. The pools were either discolored by blood or full of broken bottles and things that were thrown in the midst of panic. There was also the poor smell of rotting corpses in the area. It was awful to see how a resort that was full of joy and happiness is now full of death and despair. As we kept walking we heard a sudden growl nearby.

"Shhh. Wait a second. I heard something." - I whispered quietly. "Walk really slow and don't make a sound." - I said quietly. Ana nodded and walked slowly behind me. When we walked a bit closer we saw an infected biting on a corpse near the pool. "How are we gonna get past that without alerting the rest in the area?" - Ana whispered. I looked around me to see if there was any object that I could throw to make the infected move but there was no luck. "There isn't anything near us that I could throw to make it move." - I whispered. Ana sighed as I kept thinking of another way to get around this. "Okay, this is what we are gonna do. On the count of 3 we are gonna slowly tip toe our way past the infected." - I said. "Shit, are you crazy? If it sees us then the rest of them are gonna show up and then we are screwed." - Ana said. "Listen, it's the only thing we have unless you could think of something better." - I said as I sighed. Ana sighed as I could tell she did not like the idea but knew it was the only choice. "Alright fine, but if this ruins our chances of getting that radio I'm feeding you to the infected." - Ana said sarcastically. "Understood mam." - I said with a smirk on my face.

"Alright, let's go. On the count of 3.....1....2.....3" - I said. We slowly tip-toed our way past the infected but then a random gust of wind knocked over a plastic bottle on a nearby table causing a slight sound. "Stop right here. Don't make a sound." - I said as I placed my arm in front of Ana guarding her. The infected looked up and growled as it must have heard the sound of falling on the floor. A few moments later it got up it growled even louder and suddenly more growls from the distance could be heard. Ana and I stood still as I could feel my heart beat a thousand miles an hour. I looked over and could notice Ana closing her eyes as shes breathing just as hard as I am hoping that we aren't seen. Then a few moments the infected began running towards the sound as a huge horde of infected followed.

For a few moments all we could see and hear was growls as the infected ran from the right towards the sound. Then a few moments later I heard a scream from what sounded like a guy. Ana and I slowly peeked over to see what the scream was about and what we saw was the perfect example of what this resort has become. For a few moments we could hear the cries and screams of the man as a big group of infected ripped his body to shreds.

I looked over to Ana and could see the horror and disgust in her face. "Hey, you okay?" - I asked with a concern. "Yeah, I'm fine. We should keep moving." - she whispered. I nodded and then we continued to move across the path and followed the footprints. A few moments later we heard another growl but only this time it was coming from behind us. Ana and I stopped for a moment wondering where the growl was coming from. As we turned around there was an infected looking right at both of us as drool, blood and pus came from all parts of the body. It then came to our realization that the infected we were confronted by is the body of the partner of the guy that left with the radio.

Stolen novel; please report.

"Holy shit...it's him." - Ana said in shock. "That must be the reason why we found both of the walkie talkies on the floor and the blood trail." - I said. We both looked at him wondering what we were gonna do as this didn't seem like any normal infected. He was much bulkier than your average infected and much more stronger with a louder and more aggressive growl. "Shit, what are we gonna do?" - Ana said as she looked at me. "I don't know" - I said as I could feel my heart drop.

A few moments later the infected growled even louder and began to speed walking to us. "Oh shit he's coming towards us! Be ready Ana!" - I said as I raised my bat and gripped it tightly. As he quickly approached us I took a swing at its head but no damage was done. Ana proceeded to take another swing at its leg but before being able to make a hit the infected swung its arm tossing Ana to the side. "Ana!!!!" - I yelled as she fell onto the side of a table. I swung my bat out of anger breaking it in the process. I quickly ran to Ana's aid to check on her. "Ana, you okay?! - I said as I held her hand. "Yeah...I'm okay. Just hit my ass hard on the ground." - she said as she wiped the dirt off of her clothes. As the infected began to approach us again I used the broken part of the bat and swung at the head of the infected piercing it in the eye with the sharp end of the broken bat. The infected lost its balance and began to tremble as it lost it seemed to have lost its sight temporarily.

I quickly helped Ana get up as the infected started to regain its sight. "Angel its coming towards us again.." - Ana said out of fear. "Quick! Give me your bat." - I said in a hurry. "Why? - Ana asked. "Just give me it!" - I said. Ana hands her bat to me reluctantly as the infected got closer. I then snapped the bat in half on my knee creating two sharp points out of it and lunged at the infected. The moment I got close to the infected he took a swing at me leaving a blind spot open. I stabbed the infected in the other eye taking away its ability to see momentarily. As the infected stumbled I took the other piece of the broken bat and took one final swing piercing it in its brain. The infected groaned before stumbling and then eventually 5 feet deep into the pool.

Ana and I walked up to the pool and surely enough stabbing it in its eyes and head did enough damage to kill it. "Shit..that was a close one. Good work Angel." - Ana said as she fist bumped me and smiled. I leaned close enough to remove the broken piece of the bat to use as weapons. It may be broken but we could still use these as weapons." - I said as I handed Ana the other half of the bat.

After the encounter with the infected form of the guy we continued to follow the trail of blood and soon enough we reached the spot that it was leading us to. "Well...shit. I didn't expect to be back here." - I said as I looked at the back of the hotel with the blood trail leading to the back door. "Back to where it all began." - Ana said as she rubbed the sweat off of her head. Both of stood there as we looked knowing damn well that we had to go back into a place that we nearly died in.

"We don't have to go back in there if you don't want to. We could just tell Jean that the guys were dead but we didn't find the radio." - I said as I looked at Ana. "No..no it's fine. we didn't fight that bastard back there just to stop here. We made it this far. We might as well finish the job." - she said as she looked back at me. I nodded at her and then walked up to the door slowly opening it with Ana following closely behind. As I opened the door I saw nothing but a dark hallway with the lights dimming in and out. "Watch your step. It's really dark in here. I can't really see much. "There has to be a flashlight in here somewhere." - Ana said as she looked around.

I began looking on the floor before finding a flashlight on the ground near a corpse. I flipped the switch and soon behold the flashlight turned on. "Found one! I could see much better here now. Let's keep moving." - I said. We continued to walk down the dark hallway until we arrived near the hotel gym. "Shhh stop. I heard something." - I said quietly as I looked across the hall and could hear growling from ahead. I looked a bit closer and could see a few wandering infected through the gym window. I looked back at Ana before looking at both directions of the hallway. "The blood trail leads that way. We will have to walk past the gym so we stay low and walk slowly and quietly." - I whispered. Ana nodded and then we began to crouch. We slowly crouched quietly as we looked through the windows of the gym to see if there was any sign of life in there but sadly the gym was full of infected.

As we got past the gym we continued to follow the blood trail as it led us past some rooms. As we walked past the rooms there were many open doors with a bunch of suitcases spilled all over the floor. We looked in every door to see if there was a sign of the guy but so far there was no luck. "I'm not seeing him anywhere so far." - Ana whispered. "I know, we have to keep following the trail." - I whispered.

As we continued to follow the trail we finally reached the end of it as it led to a closed door near the end of the hallway. "Well this is it. The trail leads us to the inside of the room. Be ready for anything and if anything goes down we abort." - I said as I looked back at Ana. "Copy that." - Ana said as she nodded. I slowly turned the handle of the door as it began to open. As the door opened I took a peek inside the room to see if anything was out of the ordinary. Then as I looked up towards the TV I spotted the radio sitting right next to it. "Ana I see it. The radio is up there next to the TV. Stay close to me and watch my back as I grab it." - I whispered.

I walked up to the TV and as I was about to grab the radio I heard a gun cock and placed on the back of my head. "I had a feeling he would send you." - the guy said as I turned around with a gun pointed at me. A few moments later the guy hit me in the face knocking me unconscious. "Angel!" - Ana yelled as she ran to me. "Ah ah ah...if I were you I wouldn't make a move. It looks like you two are gonna be here for a while." - the guy said menacingly as he closed the door and locked it.

It was at that moment that the task went sideways. It was at that moment that we lost contact.
