Chapter 94

#ImperialEunuch

Ji Li participated in all the training sessions the recruits took. He built up his body which he had neglected slightly, then he went to a harder training, since the recruits’ one was too mild. He didn’t force his brothers to participate, but they did anyways. Lila surprisingly also joined in on the fun, apparently, she had wanted to integrate herself a bit more.

The days continued without much worry, many soldiers benefitted from the new formations and slowly it became obvious that he knew what he was doing. Time went by without much action, until one day, the frontal observation tower was destroyed, first it was the one in the west. Then, the eastern one also lost connection, the last pictures distorted.

Ji Li was in the command room with the other captains, his brothers, Lu Wei and Lila stood by. Looking at the captain leading the scouts, he said “Quickly, go back to the regional headquarters and report that we might be attacked in great numbers. Tell them to ready themselves to instantly send us reinforcements when we send the emergency signal.”

The scout captain went out, Ji Li looked at the different captains of defence “Tell all soldiers to defend the northern, eastern and southern positions. The western has the most formations, so we should be able to defend that side easily, even without many people.”

Looking at the captains of offence he continued “Every captain, take your soldiers and go outside. I want to see you in the northwest and southwest. Be ready, after the initial barrage from the formations, there will be a five-minute delay. In these minutes, use the weakened state of the warmongers, we’ll be able to deal large amounts of damage. But be sure to retreat after four minutes! During the time they wait, Qianyu, you will have to regenerate them at full power.”

Ji Li continued giving some more commands to those that weren’t assigned to a specific team, when he finished, he told all of them to go out. Lu Wei had apparently also sighted something in the corner of his wards vision, so it was time to go to the front and defend the outpost!

On the walls of the outpost, Ji Li and his group stood still. They looked into the far west but didn’t see much. North and south of them, the captains of offence already stationed themselves with their weapons at hand. The group also used their talents, readying the formations and cautiously observing the battlefield.

The reason he didn’t tell the scouts to check the enemies out was clear, if he did so, then at least half of them would die. This wasn’t worth it just to see the enemies a few seconds earlier, no, the outposts had enough sight in their periphery to get a rough estimate without any casualties.

Lu Wei’s first reports came “I see orcs up front with many goblins inbetween them. Counting… three hundred! Growing rapidly… counting… four hundred!”

“This is the vanguard; they will have many more! How far are they from here?”

“One kilometre, they are moving at a fast pace, calculating… they should be here in 4 minutes!”

Nodding, Ji Li used a voice-enhancing jade and screamed “Enemy arriving in 4minutes! Ready yourself!”

4minutes…

3minutes…

2minutes…

Those with great sight have already seen their enemies approaching from far away.

60seconds… the enemies were 250m away from the walls…

50seconds… 210m away from the walls…

40seconds… 170m away from the walls…

30seconds… 130m away from the walls, their voices already reaching the soldiers…

20seconds… 90m away from the walls “READY YOURSELF!” all soldiers were in position…

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

10seconds… 50m away from the walls “FIRE!” the formation fired the puffballs, in addition, many earthen cannonballs formed in the air above certain points in the formation, they were shot together with the puffballs and created great destruction.

The enemies were halted in their rush, the ones in front all died one way or another, those far in the back were stopped by the corpses laying around. The fungi absorbed the energy and the second wave of them shot right up.

“SOLDIERS… CHARGE!!!” following the command, the northwest and southwest teams charged and killed all those thinking of taking a round-about way. They didn’t come close to the centre; the fungi would be controlled but accidents could happen. Not that it was necessary, the fungi used all their energy to absorb the corpses and the enemy seemed to have understood it and took several metres of distance.

The charge was unexpected, and it pushed the orcs and goblins towards the centre. Ji Li used his talent and froze all fungi, then he broke them down. The became splitters and broke down at great speed, till they were only particles of essence, which he pulled to himself. At last moment, he didn’t absorb the energy but pushed it into the formation.

Seeing this, the soldiers knew it was time to go back. Just a second after the last soldier retreated, the next wave of attack came from the formation. The warmongers were more fearful this time, but they had no way to escape, behind them were their own kind while in front was the pure death. Left and right only enemies blocking their path.

Their chain of command didn’t reach to the forefront, and so, a third wave, fourth wave, fifth wave came, and they didn’t change anything. The whole vanguard was shredded, over six hundred of them, till finally, the central army came.

Not that it changed much, they had no way of destroying the formation, so, in a surprisingly smart fashion, they decided the attack the northern and southern walls with their flanking armies. They might be stupid, but they were called warmonger tribes for a reason, if only their had trolls in their ranks, then it would go beyond basic strategy.

The defence captains easily defended their post, the offence captains changed their target every second break between the waves to attack their respective side instead of resting. This strained them a lot more than it should have since this formation was new to them, but it worked out. Minimal loss on their side, while the flanks which had three hundred each were quickly destroyed. The main army had over a thousand orcs and goblins, but they never came close to the walls, shredded by the formation and the soldiers.

This didn’t stop until a few hours later. The formation had already given up at this point, many faults came to be, but it wasn’t a hard fight. The leading orc was injured greatly during the charge and was killed at last with the united strength of both offence teams.

The spoils of war weren’t many, their bodies were used as energy for the formation, their weapons were bad in the first place, and they were poor when they were kicked out, so this really wasn’t profitable. This was also why there was never much motivation fighting against such enemies, they would only lose and not win. Of course, that is only if you call defending the whole territory and population, a loss.

After the fight, Ji Li gathered all soldiers in the central square in the outpost, which was in front of the stone buildings acting as the core. He looked at Lu Wei and told him “You recorded everything, right? Project the fight.”

Lu Wei nodded and he showed a main screen which was from a birds-view, while there were several other screens from the side and the different wards, from far to near, every point was shown. Lu Wei then created a water mirror and handed it to Ji Li.

Looking at it, Ji Li used his essence to point at the screen in front of him, and lines appeared on the main screen. He moved around a bit as a test then looked at the soldiers and captains. They were all standing with no movement, respect and fear visible in their eyes.

“Horse Stance!” he called out, all of them stomped at the ground and took the horse stance.

Ji Li sternly looked at them and let the recording play slowly in 0.25 speed. It was straining and slow, but the effect was better. Calling out every single mistake in a live fashion, he called out the people and told them their mistakes, but also what they should have done.

The battle went over for hours, naturally it would take even longer with .25 speed, while there were also many breaks inbetween to show each single action which was wrong. Just looking sideways for a second longer than necessary was called out for him. He was petty, that was for sure, but he didn’t care, and showed them all how to do better.

At one point, he called people out and told them to leave for patrol, he switched out every few hours and kept each name in his minds and then told those that disappeared all their mistakes that happened in the time, if there were any. He also recorded this teaching session and gave everyone a copy, telling them to rewatch it and write a ten-page essay of each of their mistakes and how they would deal with them.

All soldiers would receive courses to write, some were just slower and worse at writing, but he told them that it didn’t matter whether they wrote well, they had their comrades to ask for help, as long as everyone wrote it themselves, it was fine.

Several lessons were put together this time, and it stretched for many weeks. It was only over shortly before the next large raid began, and Ji Li once again recorded the same things, told them their mistakes and punished everyone that repeated his mistakes.
