Chapter 47 - Empty Victory

[After fighting for several minutes, you suddenly comprehend how to increase the speed of the [Nine Bull Fist].]

Lem’s simulated self began punching several times faster than before, as the deathbear barely managed to dodge the attacks.

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!

Lem noticed that the harmony behind the [Nine Bull Fist] had not changed. It just felt more intense.

The movements complemented each other to an even greater degree.

At the same time, the attack seemed natural and graceful, as though it was blessed by the very world itself.

Is this the true [Nine Bull Fist]?

Lem immediately chided himself.

The improvement was not even as great as the first one, which had allowed him to break into the ‘proficient’ stage of understanding.

It was impossible that his simulated self had already mastered the technique!

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!

The deathbear was clearly growing more desperate. It had long become the one who was taking cover behind trees while Lem pursued it.

There had already been a few moments where it had just barely managed to escape being hit.

Lem’s simulated self swung his fist, as he had done countless times before.

The reaction from the deathbear was different.

Instead of jumping back, it growled and ducked its head.

For a brief moment, he knew what was about to occur, but the die was already cast.

Midway through the swing, the deathbear lunged toward him at full speed, allowing itself to be hit in return, all for one clean attempt to kill him.

CRACK!

His fist landed directly on the cavity in the deathbear’s face, partial shattering the skull.

His arm exploded in pain!

At the same time, the deathbear’s paw came down directly on lems leg, shearing through his thigh.

[As your attacks become harder to avoid, the deathbear lunges at you in a desperate bid. It mauls you on the leg, but you also manage to land another strike directly on the beast’s head.]

As its head was being mutilated, the body of the deathbear was simultaneously propelled downward, directly into the ground, where it stopped lifelessly.

A moment later, Lem’s simulated self fell down on top of it.

He was in a daze.

When he looked down, he saw that most of his left leg was missing. His arm was broken in several places and hanging limply at his side.

He wanted to act, to bandage himself, but he couldn’t move his arms.

He couldn’t feel anything.

[The deathbear falls to the ground, dead, but you are not much better, as your leg and arm are both mangled.

You have lost a large amount of blood, and you collapse on top of the deathbear, unable to even wrap your wounds. You do not feel happy, despite your feat of finally taking down the beast.]

Lem watched as the sensations coming from his body gradually dwindled.

He was sure of one thing.

The moment the simulation ended, he needed to run to the north.

Whatever dangers were involved, it was better than what remained for him here.

Even with his improved [Nine Bull Fist], all it had led to was a quicker death.

[You bleed out and lose consciousness. You die…]

[Simulation ends.]

The memories poured into Lem’s mind.
