It wasn’t long before an old man dressed in a golden kimono came down the stairs.
He caught my gaze right away and said, “Come on then lad and let’s get this over with.”
Then promptly walked back up the stairs.
Looking around just to make sure he wasn’t talking to anyone else I quickly followed him. He led us to an office with a breathtaking view of the city behind an oval shaped window. From here I saw how I could get back to my waiting team to tell them of what happened today.
“I find it curious that someone with a background I’d never heard of has the combat types and stats you do that I’d never heard of.” said the guild master, “I’m Yaguo the guild master here. Let me be frank with you. I scanned you the moment I saw you and I believe what I saw. I also noticed that you use a mana powered blade disguised as a staff. That’s pretty clever of you young man. I’m guessing the guards didn’t even check it assuming you were a pure mage. Given that one of your listed combat types is assassin. Well, I still have to test you and just to be clear my examiners do not have equipment capable of defending against your weapon, so I’ll ban you from using it during your exam. Is this acceptable?” he said with a slight cough.
I agreed and this seemed to set his mind at ease. After the formalities were done, I learned that he was once an adventurer himself. Claiming the rank of A before retiring due to an injury, hunting an Ancient Dragon. Enamored by his tale I listened until it was time for my exam.
It wasn’t long before a pair of adventurers came into the room. Each looking powerful in their own right. Both women had an aura of danger and power. One was dressed in a lush green dress matched with brown and gold robes, and the other was wrapped in black bandages from head to toe.
“Allow me to introduce you to some of the more powerful adventurers here in Twin City. And before you ask about the laws regarding women. They are exempt as long as they don’t cause too much of a ruckus. On the left is Vindel. She is a B ranked adventurer with the Druid combat type rank A. On the right is Clair. An assassin combat type rank A and an A ranked adventurer. You’ll be fighting both of them. Not at the same time but oddly enough you possess both combat types and claim them to be both S rank. The fights are not to the death, nor do I expect you to win but I do look forward to a good show.” Yaguo declared.
Both women heard his declaration of my S rank compatibility with their preferred combat type and gave me an appraising glance. Once Yaguo finished explaining everything to me I was directed to the basement where they had a training ground set up. It was a simple packed dirt arena. I was to fight the druid woman here and without any fanfare I stepped out into the arena. Leaving my scythe resting against the wall near the entrance.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
Vindel entered the arena from the opposite side. Yaguo sat in an observer's box with Clair. Once we were situated, he raised his hand, and the fight began.
The moment his hand dropped vines burst from the ground to entangle me. I slashed them down with a wind blade spell then followed it up with a fog spell. Vindel wasn't idol throughout this. I was getting ready to cast another spell when I noticed that the ground was now covered in lush green grass. When I looked up a cluster of lightning was lancing in my direction. I threw my body to the ground. Barely dodging the brunt of the attack but not without taking some damage. Some of the lightning bolts arched off the main body striking me during my dodge attempt.
It felt like fire entered my veins, causing me to jerk and twist in sporadic motions. As I lay on the ground trying to regain control of my body, I noticed small red flowers blooming from the ground. With each bloom a pop of pink pollen followed, slowly tinting my fog a reddish pink color. Realizing what she was doing I regained my footing and cast bioluminescence on her pollen. It lit up the arena, blinding even me for a moment. I took the time I bought to cast boom shroom and followed it up with a wind tunnel. Forcing the shrooms to rip from the ground and fly in her direction, exploding all around her. The bioluminescence spell I cast caused her silhouette to show like a shadowy beacon among a million lights. As I continued to bombard her with exploding mushrooms a bolt of lightning came crashing down on me from above. I managed to survive the attack, but my vision was fading fast, and she wasn’t moving. Before I knew it I heard the telltale sparks of lightning forming around me and one more strike hit me. My vision went black.
When I woke up, I was in a bed next to Vindel. She was covered in nasty looking burns and her breathing was ragged. There was a man standing at the foot of the bed casting healing magic on her. Giving her noticeable relief. The guild master was also present and standing next to him was Clair. Looking like she was itching for a fight. She had her left arm holding her right and was visibly shaking while staring at me with a wicked smile.
“It would seem like your claim for Druidry was true and now that you’ve been fully healed your next bout is with Clair.” he said with a frown, and continued, “Once you're ready head to the floor below the one you just fought in. Clair and I will be waiting for you there.”
He stood up and walked out with Clair right behind him. With the two of them gone I sat up, collected my gear and headed to the room he instructed me to go to.
In here was a room that looked like a maze town of sorts. Each of the buildings had some sort of spell cast on them that allowed you to see through them. Clair was already standing at her entrance. Hopping up and down in excitement and twirling a pair of sickles in each hand.
“Glad you could make it Savas. Getting right to the point You each have to kill a target within this arena. You have the same target, and you are allowed to interfere with each other. However, due to your talents as assassins if you draw blood. It will be considered a fatal blow. You may not actually give your opponent a fatal strike or you’ll be disqualified and charged with murder. Savas you may use your chosen weapon here. Oh, and before I forget, once you’re inside the arena you won't be able to see through the buildings. Only spectators are able to. Do you have any questions?” he asked, “No, good. Now enter and begin your hunt. You each have to find a man with a red hat.”
Wasting no time, I dashed into the mix of oddly shaped buildings. It wasn’t even 5 minutes before I spotted the man with the red hat. Smiling, I took out my scythe and kept to a ledge where I could get a better view of him. To my surprise Clair was already nearing striking distance. Not wanting to let her win and not wanting to lose sight of the target I cast telekinesis on Clair causing her to float up towards the ceiling and then cast flood on the well the man was standing next to. As Clair spun around in the air trying to regain control the man grabbed the lid of the well and tried to forcibly close it.
This gave me a chance to move in and I didn’t miss it. I was nearly about to strike the man when I saw a glint of light in the corner of my eye and in a flash, it was gone.
“Match over!” Yaguo shouted.
I was confused for a moment until I saw a sharpened needle sticking out of the ground near my food. Taking a closer look at it I saw a drop of blood fall from my cheek. Splashing against the ground. With a sigh I stood up and made my way over to the guild master. On my way I noticed that Clair was standing on the ceiling somehow holding herself up there with a chain.
