Chapter 18 : Contents of the Scroll

Enjar took a look at the scroll on his hands. The content of the scroll was a contract that needed one to finish a quest in a month. It was about achieving a piece of land that requires one to defeat a group of people. This was like a mercenary mission. This was classified information that somehow the Gril family was able to put their hands on it. It seemed that the person who made this request did not want to publish the quest in a broad and open way.

'Hmm… So what I need to do is to exterminate this group of people huh? For whatever reason, the time limit is three months. And the reward for completing this quest is a piece of land that would be given after completing the mission. Hmm…' Enjar thought inside of his mind. He contemplated the contents carefully while calculating his plans.

The contract said that anybody can finish this quest as long as they brought the contract and proof of his completion. Enjar thought that the contract needed to be brought out together with the proof after completing the quest with the intention to curb unnecessary information circulated to the greater masses. It was also a measure that this mission was done by people who had been informed by the contractor themselves, and they could link some pieces together better even if the contract was in the hands of outsiders somehow.

That was just his thinking though, and he did not think that this was a big problem. The biggest problem is naturally how to finish this quest. The group of people that needed to be exterminated was a group of a gang. The gang had been making a ruckus in a valley that had some villages and a city. And this request was made by someone who supposedly had a misgiving with the gang in that place. Coincidentally, it seemed that that person was a person who had some influence there.

Enjar actually did not expect that he would be getting the contract. He just wanted to get some coins as compensation for causing him some trouble. But he accidentally touched a paper and subconsciously took it from the pouch. He then decided that he wanted to take a look at the information as compensation instead of taking coins, but then he saw the contents and decided to take it. More precisely, he decided to act.

He was only trying to make it seem as if he was trying to take it for real. He started to walk away and was surprised that Kail and his goons did not even try to take back the scroll from him. He found it pretty weird. True, that he got ganged up and almost beaten like a helpless man in front of a pack of hungry hyenas. But he was still able to pretty much survive the ordeal without even a speck on his face like a miracle. He even appeared dominatingly, as if it was just a Monday to him. Even though his back hurt a little bit, that was it. Nothing more.

Meanwhile the Gril family not only lost face but also lost a valued item. This was a good opportunity for one who could finish this and get the reward according to the deal described inside the scroll. Then how could the Gril family let him go and took away the scroll without even putting any effort to stop him?

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

If the information pretty much had a big value, then why did Kail and his men just let Enjar go, one might ask? It was because one of the reasons was that this quest was basically a gamble. Yes, this contract was basically a gamble, whether you would be successful or not it would bring two great things in an opposite manner.

If one was successful in doing the task that had been described, then he would be receiving a big prize. But if he failed, then it would bring disaster to him. The quest would not only bring harm to the one who dared to take on this quest, it could also bring death to his doorstep. Fighting against a group of bandits without proper preparations would be like trying to cross the desert without even bringing meals and portions. Literally asking for a beating.

But Enjar still decided to go there without even flinching an eyebrow or two. He went to the outskirts of the city yet again, but this time he went in another direction. Now he went to the east, to the east gate of the city.

There, he went to a stable and asked someone there to give him a ride. He proceeded to rent a cartridge and paid the money in advance. It was a cartridge where there were two horses that pulled the cartridge. The cartridge itself was not that big, but also was not that small. It could contain a few people, at most 4 people to sit there comfortably.

He sat on the front seat to act as the driver and checked the cartridge for a little bit. After knowing that it was in good condition, he took off, going into the supposed place where the locations of the gang were scouted and seen. He seemed to have good control over the horses, like an experienced man who knew how to do his work.

He did all of this quickly, using the time that he had like he knew how to efficiently use his time. He was a quite busy man after all, this much agility and quick execution needed to be had. Especially after he remembered the things that he had forgotten from the amnesia, he seemed like he could not afford to waste even a minute. But he was a human being after all, who had primal necessities to be fulfilled.

"A gamble huh? Heh…" Enjar snorted in a mocking way.

After a few hours of riding the cartridge, he found himself standing on a cliff, looking downwards into the valleys and saw that there were some houses down below him. His eyes were looking keenly incisive, his left arm was folded below his chest while holding the scroll, while his right arm held his chin and rubbed it erratically. He kept on contemplating things regarding the quest described inside the scroll.

And at that moment, his eyes narrowed sharply. He looked at a place around the village where there were groups of people having quite a ruckus down there. He saw a group of people starting to act aggressive and despotic to another group of people. They acted domineering, as if they were the lords of the land who had every right to do anything they wanted in this place. While the group that got harassed looked scared and helpless.

Even though the harassers had smaller numbers, they seemed to have more authority than the oppressed. And now a scene was unfolding in front of his eyes. He saw a boy was getting beaten black and blue by a group of people. The boy looked like he was in early teens, around 13 years old.

He was around 150 cm with a pretty skinny body. The boy was okay just a few moments ago, until a man decided to punch him in the face and kicked him in his gut. And a few men joined him and started to attack him from many sides. They all were only using their bodies to attack the boy, without any blunt or sharp weapons unsheathed.

The boy spit some saliva and blood after a few attacks and started to fall, without even having the time to put up a fight with them. It was either that, or he was just helpless and scared, did not have the guts or momentum to fight against them and tried to bear it all rather than to incite them and put him in a worse condition.

Enjar was still standing on the cliff, where it looked like it was an isolated place, seemingly hard for one to even find the way to this place here. The cliff was rocky and also full of trees and vegetation around it. And at that moment, Enjar took a few steps where he would fall had he taken just about five steps from the ground where he was standing just now. And five steps did he take, marking him looking as if he was taking a suicide by falling from the high ground.
